This video features a very special guest: my Granda, who happens to be the only person I could find (and I searched quite a bit) remembering and still able to demonstrate an old Polish folk wrestling tradition called "biady".
Nowadays nobody knows about it and apparently no historical records of it survived, except for some vague remarks in old newspapers and folk tales. Thus, together with the fantastic teenagers from my youth HEMA club we made an attempt at documenting some of the wrestling knowledge my Grandpa gained as a youngster.

Very interesting video, I am from Poland myself but never knew this wrestling art, mostly because I lived in Denmark since I was a child and no one told me about this art.

Interesting video, I can't help not to create paralels to HEMA with techniques vs strenght and so on.
Btw, I understand what your grandpa says better than any other Polish person I've heard so far. Maybe just because he speaks slower, but it sounds much closer to my own language.
That's a funny observation - your understanding, I mean. Perhaps it is because my Grandpa still retained much of the local dialect and in consequence often uses a bit archaic phrases and vocabulary. On a similar note, whenever I hear Czech or Slovak people speaking I can't help but feel a little as if I was listening to 16th-century Polish ;)
:) Because of what is said in the video I think about an idea: Were most common people fighting in the period of our interest, before fighting manuals for modern soldiers came up, similarly far away from any "system of combat"? Didn't they simply used, what worked? But it again comes down to, how the hell did they train that effectively? This is for me the biggest mistery of HEMA.
It's funny as we today have doubts about how we would fight for our live, even though we have such a great equipment to simulate that.
Yes, this a puzzling thing. But then again - we don't know exactly what part of the past combatants fought according to any sort of "system" and how "effective" they were. For instance, my Grandpa says in the video that in his days when somebody had strength and some technique/cunning, then he was a champion. But would he fare so well against professional wrestlers of that period? Probably not. Thus, efficiency depends on the context and it may affect what we think about the past fencers and fencing masters.
Myślisz że są jeszcze inni Polscy zapaśnicy ludowi na świecie? Na pewno bardzo mało w tych czasach.
Ciekawe jakie ludowe zapasy istniały w innych regionach Polski.
Z kolegami zaczne trenować biady w wolnym czasie, wygląda na ciekawy sposób na spędzanie czasu.
Niestety, jeśli chodzi o biady, to dotarliśmy jedynie do garstki osób, które mogły nam co nieco opowiedzieć. Znacznie więcej, o których się dowiedzieliśmy już albo nie żyje, albo nie może już niczego opowiedzieć ani pokazać (demencja, inne choroby, itd.).
Natomiast z całą pewnością jakieś inne formy zapasów ludowych istniały tu i ówdzie w całej Polsce. Ba! Samych biadów było najwyraźniej kilka rodzajów: w krzyż, w pas, w klapy, a nawet biady nożne. Niestety, nam udało się uchwycić cokolwiek więcej tylko o tych pierwszych i obawiam się, że inne warianty są obecnie bezpowrotnie stracone :(
@@Sprechfenster A szkoda, bo zapasy były w praktycznie każdej kulturze na świecie w historii, to nieodłączny element wszelkiej ludzkiej kultury, szkoda takie tradycje tracić.
Dobrze by było spopularyzować biady, tak jak wy robicie na internecie na przykład na Facebooku. Sam postanowiłem przez was zacząć biadować ze znajomymi.

To prawda. Z tych miłych starszych panów, którzy za młodu rzucali ludźmi o ziemię, jeździli konno w pozycji na baczność albo robili pełny mostek ze stania ;)
