- StudioGDT review of a DIY Saya semi-custom 1095 Differentially Hardened Katana from Ryansword.com
This is a second part to the previous review of a RyanSword Ryan1335. The sword in this review was purchase with different tsukaito style, furniture and a Do It Yourself unfinished saya. This video explores the very untraditional usage of Cerakote to finish the saya. Why Cerakote? Having used it on firearms and accessories, it is an extremely durable finish. It is heavily resistant to moisture, oils and chemicals and the fact it is ceramic based makes it lubricious by nature, aiding in ease of movement within the obi without any addition gloss or lacquer type layers. Blasphemous? Maybe...Functional and affordable? 100%

Really nice job on the visuals, nice to see sword reviews being stepped up on the quality and composition. The Sori is wonderful, overall good fit n finish on this, cant belive the saya absorbed that much oil, unless it was dipped in it😆 to change the color properties to that extreme, looks like another piece, but nonetheless nice work on your treatment of it, beautiful tone on it...the Hamon is specific wild type of Hamon that ive seen coming out of china, name escapes me...O kissaki is NICE, overall great job and nice looking sword...also big fan of that tsuba have it on 2 of my swords from Jkoo but without that changed side you have.
That’s interesting on the Tsuba I wonder if the reverse of yours is like the original? Thank you for the comments on the quality of the video. It’s only my fourth and I’ve no real prior experience doing this so it’s all on the go learning. I think other than the kashira being a bit too large, the sword hit most the marks for me. I do also agree the sori and Kissaki are the best parts! Thank you again JS! Look forward to more from you and your feedback!
DIY saya is actually a cool idea. But I'm wondering what the other finishing options besides cerakote would be, since piano wood finish isn't an option for most people.
Another easy option is Minwax wood varnish 2 in 1 with polyurethane…then you kind of get the lacquer style protection and effect without all the extra work. It would buff up real nice and be very slick in the obi.
Nice work on the Saya!
I appreciate that!!! It was definitely an experiment I would try again.
Never knew you could apply cerakote to wood. Good job, looks great. Do you think ryansword uses heavy niku on all of their blades? I’m not a fan on bulky blades with tons of niku personally.
It works on almost anything that has or you can create a substrate on! If I did it again I would have used gloss in conjunction. I had it, but at the time I didn’t know it was a wet on wet application and I had already let the brown dry.
The definitely have thin blades. The 1335 is advertised as a heavy cutter so it makes sense, but my custom shobu for example has less niku. They could make it however you’d like.
I like how Ryan Sword is trying to “Up” their game. I’ve always appreciated the fact that the do a very reasonable priced laminated blade, full samegawa wrap, and they place the menuki under the palm, which i love⚔️thanks for the review!
I agree. I’m going to have some really cool stuff to share from them soon so stay tuned.
isn't having the menuki under the palm of the hand technically 'reverse'?
@@Born_Stellar according to modern day Chinese katana, but that’s not how the rest of the world works. Usually higher end katana makers place the menuki under the palm.
@@Born_Stellar also Ryansword has been around longer than most. They made a sword for President Nixon back in the day.
@@samuraibyrd thats cool they have been around for a while, the name makes them seem newer or perhaps western.
Tozando and other iaito/nihonto makers list the 'standard' position as near the fuchi on the omote side and near the kashira on the ura side. This is the same as I've seen on every single antique katana I've seen as well, and it would put the menuki under your fingertips. some tachi seem to have the menuki the other way though. Also seeing some WW2 era with that positioning, but I'm 99% sure the 'normal' position leaves them under your fingers.
Sir you have a lot more knowledge and skill than the majority of people who buy these things. Make more videos.
I am humbled. I have a LOT to learn. About swords, about reviews about editing but I will keep it coming as long as it’s meaningful to someone. Thank you for the motivation to keep it up!
Just subbed and ill share your vid on a post.
I sincerely appreciate that! Your JKOO reviews along with a handful of reviews from others helped me get back into the game after an over 20 year hiatus! They helped me make some initial choices and I hope my videos can do the same for others!
@@StudioGDT Yup, that's the way the world goes around and around 👊👊👊🙏🙏🙏
8:01 Great photography. Also good job on the saya, that's cool. Congrats on the new sword
That was fast! The high quality version isn't even done processing yet ! Thanks for the quick view King!
@@StudioGDT aha good timing. just sat down for a coffee when the vid came up. Have a good day, man.
Good job on the video
Thanks again for the support!
You need to check out their 1336 and 1414 my top two they offer.
That 1336 has me thinking…
@@StudioGDT 1336 and 1340 are the two o-katana I can recommend. 1339 is a little too heavy but has a nice leather wrap. For budget and my students Ryansword is my go to. For higher end Skyjiro via Mountain Teachings, they make some very nice iaito.
Did the 1414 you received actually have koshi-zori curvature? The pictures on the website look like regular tori-zori to me
Great video, you did a great job on the saya as well. Just subbed
Somehow I didn’t get this notification! Thank you for the kind words and support!!!
