The Seventh Seal is a classic of Existentialist literature. The knight proposes various ploys in the real life scenes in an effort to stave off Death. In one scene, he proposes an alliance with the Bishop (also played by Ingmar Bergman). Note the chess analogy, however, the point is that even the church does not prevent human death per se. Through the entire movie, characters are dying from the black plague.
Death and the Knight have several other scenes of playing chess, but the positions are not clarified.
In the end, all of the characters arrive at the knights castle, where death appears and takes them all.
One should note the (philosophical) position taken by the Knight's squire, that death is inevitable and can only be met with courage, as befits a knight.
The philosophical fallacy of the theme is best countered by Tolstoy, in My Confession, regarding the algebraic equations that have no solution because they do not properly consider the infinite factors.

5:55 giving a passing grade to a chess game where the black moves 2 consecutive times, first 4:21 second 5:19
10:30 giving a passing grade to a chess game where a check was either wrong called or non avoided, check called at 10:04, responded at 10:10 with a rook move and calling check without capturing nor blocking (so either the black checking piece was still treating the king or there was never a check)

    • @fcolecumberri
      @fcolecumberri 4 года назад

@random guy "the guy who made the move at 5:19 was not present, when the last move was made" that is true, but he could ask who's turn is to play, I am just pointing out the master gave a passing grade when there was a clear mistake.
With the example at 10:04 even if the master pointed out that there was a mistake (magically skipping moves is a mistake regardless of how good is the conversation), he is still giving a passing grade to a mistaken scene. Also even if the game is accurate and you just film some moves and skip others, the fact that they are calling "check" one move after the last called "check" while making it seems consecutive moves is the part that is odd and quickly points out the mistake. I mean you can actually respond a check with another check that could lead to a mate in 6, but they could also search for a game in the databases where that happen and have a realistic game.

For "The Thing", thumbs up is correct. Here's why:
    The computer vocalizes:
    B-N4, N-R3
    K-R1, R-N6#
Looking at the board shown at 11:22 we see that White has his only bishop on a2 so the move "B-N4" doesn't make sense. Next the White's king is in check by the Rook on g4 so the move "N-R3" doesn't make sense. The computer seems to get "K-R1" correct but follows this up with "R-N6#?". Kurt then fries the computer with booze.
What's going on in this scene? If we listen to Kurt he says "Poor baby you're starting to lose it aren't you". Kurt isn't talking about the computer losing the game, he's saying that the computer is no longer capable of playing chess, it's broken. The computer jumps between different positions, it reads out moves that are not descriptive of what is actually played & it is also possibly making illegal moves (at the end of the scene Kurt calls the computer a "Cheating b*+ch").
Given all of these errors by the computer, the reason this is a thumbs up is because Kurt's character knows how to play chess & he knows the computer is wrong. If the film would have flashed this nonsensical play by the audience & if Kurt's character would have accepted it ("Darn you beat me again!"), competent players in the audience would know that the whole scene is BS. Since Kurt calls out the computer's mistakes he is communicating that just like the audience, he sees the same mistakes we do.
Pouring booze to short circuit the computer is a little extreme but understandable. No one should play chess against a broken computer player. I think we can all thumbs up that!

11:23 There were three possible checkmates i could see, one was moving the top bishop down to the left knight 7 square attacking the king bc the black rook blocked off both right knight squares 1 and 2 and the 2nd bishop blocked the right rook 2 square around the king trapping him in rook 1, the 2nd mate was moving the queen to right knight 3 imitating if the bishop moved to left knight 7 attacking diagonally, and the 3rd mate was what Daniel said about moving the queen to right rook 4.

13:30 Lmfaooooo, poor Danny must have been scared for life by some anime at some some point. You can hear the PTSD in his voice 😂 We need a chess anime!

How did you miss the film Pawn Sacrifice? And the famous Boris Spassky king's gambit game recreated at the start of the James Bond film From Russia With Love?

There was a tv show called endgame. Amazing show about a world champion becoming a detective. Shame it only got one season. You should look at this show. I warn you though it has a lot of chess scenes so I wouldn’t expect a commentary on all of them lol. It all seems to be legit in terms of chess.

The Mentalist s02e21 has a sort of blindfold/correspondence game going on for an entire episode. Wouldn't mind seeing that pieced together here. Also, if you want the cringy stuff there is another episode where the protagonist, after a passing glance at a game, says some nonsense like "your spanish attack is far too weak for his Sicilian defense"

The character plays metaphorical against himself and keeps getting stalemate

In russia, probably a lot of people, even amateur chess players know this Rh3 at the end of Luzhin's defence. why? because they still have a culture where a lot of people actually read in public transport instead of staring at their cellphone. I'm slightly surprised that Danny, as a respected IM, didn't know about the combination from the game Dr. Turati vs Luzhin if he read the book. It's always intriguing for us chess players to find some real chess gem in books or movies!

I know you already looked at X-Men
But if you could look at the scene where Professor X and Magneto play chess and get angry, stand up face to face and stop moving the pieces physically but certainly continue the match verbally saying moves
I'm not sure but I think it's from one of the first two original X-Men movies
