SAD A TOWN THE SIZE OF ROCKFORD DIDN'T GET IT TOGETHER & DO SOMETHING WITH THIS BUILDING APARTMENTS FOR ELDERLY, VETS, HEALTH DEPARTMENT. SHOULD HAVE TAKEN ALL THE WOOD FLOORS & ALL THE WOOD WORK, CLOCKS, ANYTHING THAT COULD BE IN SOME MUSEUM. OF SELL.
The poop in attic is bat shit. The school was loaded with bats and you could see them come in and out at dusk and daylight. Plus the basement is where we had kindergarten and our food trays.
My dad was born in 1894 the year this school was built. He and his siblings went there along with my 4 much older siblings. My turn to go to church school came and l went from 1sr through 3rd grade, 1945-1947. My Sunday school teacher was also my 1st grade teacher. This school served a very wide area of students. I remember the little store across the street where kids would buy candy dots on paper and also they sold schooo supplies, nd the grocery store had a great meat market too. So sad to see such beauty destroyed. Just like the beautiful oak wood work in my grandfather's home at 302 Royal avenue wifn the wrap around Porch that was removed. We spent two Summer s on that oorch during g the polio epidemic. Not much hope for the west side of Rockford, such devastation. It is the prettiest part of the city with the old trees. I would love to visit the city but understand the area is not safe. Moving to Florida years ago, l still miss the old maples, oak, elm and pine trees. I xtilknuave the Mueller school pictures of my classes and l am still friends with some of my classmates today. My husband also went there and l have 6 years of his classmates too. Would be nice if the area could be renovated and this beautiful school could be used again, perhaps apartments
I went there K-12 from 79/80 through 85/86 ...yeah, those bathrooms. From what I remember, lower grades used the basement bathrooms and then higher grades used the normal bathrooms with stall doors.
I use to play in the school yard as a kid, my grandmother, Grace Pagano, lived directly across the street from that school. My aunt Joe was even the janitor there. Good old Church Street.
I went to work with my mother . She was a teacher aide. I was 3 and 4. I'd sit and watch her work. Then I went kindergarten through 6th. My family went here from 60s till 80s. We had 8 kids.
I went to Church School in the mid '60s, it was a beautiful place in a beautiful neighborhood. All the Rockford schools of that vintage were incredible. They closed, sold, or razed most of them after the baby boom went through in favor of some modernist, poorly constructed replacements. They would have been much better off keeping the old schools and retrofitting them with whatever upgrades were required to support modern times. Rockford has slowly abandoned its West side over the last 50-60 years ... in fact find the date they announced I-90 was going to pass just East of town and you'll have found the date the West side decline began. Sad.
I went to this school in 1965 or 1966. The library was upstairs by the Main Office to the left, it was a big room with lots of shelves for all the books. My last 2 years there, I helped out the librarian checking out books.
I spent 4 wonderful years and etched many solid gold memories in that school. Probably 1958/9 thru 1962, second semester 1st grade thru 4th. What was once a grand old home in an elm tree enveloped densely wooded community. 429 N. Avon St. But it's decrepit and disgraceful now too. You're correct on some of that 'tour's but off on an equal amount. I've been cursed with too near total recall, was before my strokes anyway. If inside I could still tell you where the rooms and teachers I had were, favorites and where my friends and I even sat. Still have some of the Mueller Photography class photos of some. Jackson Elementary on Crosby Street, Summit and Jackson streets was my next. Only for 5th, 6th grade at another photo of urban blight at Loves Park Elementary.
Cool Video...Closed down in 93 Wow.....amazing how fast a building can deteriorate. Never went to this school but grew up in Rockford so it's still neat to see.
I'm watching this masterpiece again.. It is so sad they tore it down, Millions of memories lost to time over it's almost 100-year run. Seems like the city doesn't care about these old historic places. like when they tore down the old civil war Hospital on Main Street
Shut up lol.... I had a pack back with a car charger battery Pack in it to control the light I had and it was heavy that it was bringing my pants down... And I had no way of bringing my britches up because of my hands being occupied 😂
I was in their first than u this was posted on July/12/17. I was in their lots of times I went wen it was getting dark u will hear doors open and close.
vado575 yeah it’s creepy, I remember wen I was little it was abandoned and I saw someone in there just standing looking out the window from the top floor I waved hi but he didn’t respond back, then few wears later I went in.
vado575 Oh! And that big old creepy house with the big fence around the back that’s was my grandma house and still runs in the family.. u showed it a little bit wile u where recording with your camera outside the window
Went there 1968 - 1973. was a really cool building! Would love to go inside!! Ms Anderson for kindergarten and 1st grade; Ms Clap for 3rd; Ms church for 4th and Mr Powel for 5th. Why does the dude filming keep saying "pull up my pants"??
I was filming it.. I simply didn't wear a belt that day and I had no way to pull them up.. as I was wearing a backpack that held a portable car charger to power this LED light that I Jerry rigged to.. And I was holding a light and the camera so both my hands were occupied..
I just drive around and saw a couple but ones with entrances. Barber colman I found a way in but its risky and I heard u can barely get anywhere inside the building
As a Rockfordian, I have always been fascinated by abandoned schools. Like...what they were like. How did they feel. What kind of happy memories.
Principal Kreider, Miss Barber and Miss Chabucus were there when I went to K.

I was always obsessed with that place and I've lived close by for 7 years

Just about a landmark and no one in the city admin cares. It could be used for so many things. Truly sad.

Dixie Nielsen I wonder if that grocery store was owned by the Schlagels at that point.
Hello Dixie. I also attended then. Haynes Goddard, hcg@fuse.net
My dad went there in 1943.. he just watched this, thank you for bringing back good memories for him.. 😊
When I heard the song "we'll meet again"
I heard Bill cipher's voice in my head-
The school could be turned into a home for the homeless.
You're an idiot....

I still remember my best friend in 5th grade. I was really sad when she moved away to a different state.
I Attended Church School From 1962 - 1967 K-5 Many Memories , Gary Van Buskirk
The basement bathrooms remind me of the alternative school in my high school years... great times really.
FallenKing93 yeah they were awesome...
Haha well, at least I wasn't the only person who had to deal with something like this.

My 6th cousin Martha Langwill (Nevens) taught there in 1910.
I wonder what she'd think of the neighborhood today?
I love urban exploring vids
Jael Jade yeah it's not the best urban exploration video.. It's kinda shaky
Nice Job, Long Live Rockford, IL
