  • Sofirn IF22A Flashlight with TIR type-C and 21700 cell
    www.sofirnlight.com/products/...
    Despite being a thrower i can fit it in my pockets
    mighty throw with the SFT40 and some useful spill i can hike with.
    21700 m,eans plenty capacity and the price is incredible.
    8.5 out of 10 i would give it a 9 but it lacks a working 18650 collar, the
    PD issue which may effect a very small number of users etc and low CRI.

    The side by side comparisons, either stills or motion videos, are extremely helpful. Pathfinder playing in the background. What's not to like.
    I think you convinced me to get a C8+ 😁. I 'm on the countryside these days and trying to find a use for IF22A on our property. Neighbours and ppl on the small opposite hill must be wondering who's that idiot waving his beam in the night sky.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  Год назад +5

      Ha ha I love it. Well id say that the c8+ is worth the money. It looks good it works well and it's very cheap. Plus I like a simple tail clicker here and there.
      I wonder if they will do a c8+ with an sft40 that would be pretty impressive.

      Thank you very much I try to cover as much as I can in the quest to find out if a light is good or bad. My IF22A is still working and I was testing it along side an expensive LEP type light and still used this to walk with as the LEP was too focused for me. As usual Sofirn always make me smile and their prices are a steal in my personal opinion.

    I've seen quite a few video reviews of the IF22A but yours finally convinced me to order one, which I did two days ago! 🔦☺ It will come in the green version though as the Sofirn store ran out of the grey and black ones. I already own a Wurkkos TS11 (plus its 18650 extension tube) but have always been intrigued by the IF22A.
    As for the 18650 collar adapters, I found out that each 18650 cell which I've ordered from Wurkkos comes with a free SM11 model zoomable flashlight. The SM11 is designed for the 21700 cell and Wurkkos ships their 3000 mAH 18650 batteries with the collars.

    This is a most excellent thrower. Great price, simple easy UI, good solid quality and outstanding performance with a TIR lens and SFT 40 LED. The conundrum of charging with a power bank, especially the one in the video is to use a cable that is type c on one end and type a on the other (but you already knew that, I just wanted to sound like I had some knowledge). These in-depth reviews with live beam shot comparisons are the best. Thank you, that has to be a lot of work.

      I agree with you. Sofirn have made a fun, value and very capable light. Love mine still. Yes i spend a lot time testing and then editing but I feel like it's worth it. As long as viewers enjoy and it also helps show a honest account of the lights then it's good for potential buyers. Thanks for the kind words 🤘😃

    The sleeve could be even shorter and be fine, the issue is the flat-top 18650 you tried. The Sofirn 18650's are button-top and close the circuit.

    AC/DC is one of the greatest bands ever!
    I recently bought a Sofirn C8L which reminds me a bit of this flashlight.
    I'm really liking the C8L. It's pretty bright has got decent throw and the spill is useable. The C8L comes with the 18650 sleeve and it works great. I didn't try charging in the light though so I don't know how that would work. I actually dislike those charging ports and seldom use them. I just don't trust those rubber flaps, they are constantly popping out and the charging ports are just another possible failure point.
    I have a headlight from Sofirn too and it seems pretty decent. I'll probably try some more of their lights and some more Wurkkos too.
    I've been using Wowtacs and Thorfire for several years now and they have never failed me but I can't find Thorfire anymore and it seems like Wowtac is fading away too. So I'm trying new budget lights now. I'm mainly looking for more powerful lights to take the place of my old ones.
    This was a great review and I'm subscribing. 😊

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  11 месяцев назад +1

      I have an ancient Thorfire and its still working 100 percent. You are right I don't seem to see them anymore. Thank you for the subscription mate that's so kind, I think you will like Sofrin and Wurkkos. I just did a review of the Wurkkos TS10 and loved it. both Wurkkos and Sofirn are great right now. i do also get a little annoyed at flaps but some of them are decent and will last. i do prefer charging ports hidden behind a screwed section like on nextorch etc.

    Enjoyed watching your in-depth review. Too bad the sleeve doesn't work for 18650 batteries. You would think Sofirn would have actually tested out the sleeve before supplying it with the light. I always keep around spare magnets for finicky lights that might not have extended contacts for flat top batteries. Great editing showing off the beam patterns in photos and the video itself. Nice looking image in 4k with HDR 10 grading my friend. For the price and what you get in this light, it's definitely a bargain even with a few drawbacks. Looking forward to your next review my friend! 👍

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  Год назад +3

      Yes I'm surprised myself as an they need to do is use a collar with a button section, I've seen them before. It's something they can change without much work so at least there is that.

    • @dalelc43
      @dalelc43 5 месяцев назад

      It doesn't work with his flat top, don't use a flat top use a button top. It's a known problem he is choosing to ignore, flat tops tend to be shorter than button tops. How about everybody follows the specs for battery length? They make button top batteries, it's made to fit their batteries. In a test of 22 18650 batteries the length of the batteries varied between just under 65mm all the way to 70mm. The spec is 68mm the Panasonic and the Samsungs tested were the shortest at 65mm and under 12 of them measured within 0.3mm the other 10 including the top brands can't read a spec sheet. But let's just blame the light.

      And that tells me that the 2-digit number is just model/capacity indicator. Kinda like Samsung 30Q, 35E or Liitokala Lii-50E. Does sofirn do this with all their batteries? Do we know what the Amp cap is on IF22A?

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  Год назад +3

      Interesting. I just can't see how this is a 50 amp at this capacity of that's supposed to be a continuous draw figure.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  Год назад +3

      That would make sense. I didn't test the amp draw here as my multi meter blows up after 10 amps. But if it's the model number it's a bit cheeky having it look like it's an amp rating.

    @TrailTrek Regarding the USB-C Power Delivery (PD) with a power bank issue, have you tried holding down the power button on your power bank with the torch connected? After holding for a few seconds, the direction of USB PD charging should be reversed. As part of the PD protocol, the two devices need to negotiate which is the master/slave device, and your power bank may preferentially choose to be the slave device, but most power banks have this provision to swap the master/slave relationship by holding down the power button. Hope this helps!

I have to take a point or three off the vid for that but I still gave a thumbs up because I am so nice and I like the beam shot stuff though that guy Piercing the Darkness who uses a drone now is the current beam shots star.

  • @geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz

    What if you pugged the USB-C into the power bank first and then into the torch if that would sort it as the torch might see power available and then start to charge. You plugged the torch in first so that then the power bank saw a power supply when you plugged that in and so it started to charge. I was an electronic engineer so this occurred to me as a possible solution? BTW I got one of those IF22A on Ali Express with battery for £18 but I have not seen it yet though should be new and I also have from Sofirn the SC33 on the way and looking forward to that one as I already like my SC32.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  9 месяцев назад +1

      same. im having the same issue with a Sofirn here its really irritating. You will enjoy the flashlights when they arrive, if you can work out a way to disable power pack function on flashlights so type-c to type-c works let me know I've been sat here testing a Sofirn with this issue and its wasted this evening trying to work out how to stop it! lol Let me know how you like the lights mate i love to hear from users.

    • @geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz
      @geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@TrailTrek Did you try plugging the power pack in first and then the torch as I explained above? Maybe use a usb-A to C cable from the power bank to the light. Or failing that ask Sofirn. Yes got the SC33 5k and it's very nice warm tone & solid and powerful. I wouldn't lug it around hiking though unless maybe for a short hike. I got it on flash sale from Sofirn delivered in a week I think from China for only £28 all in with 5000mah battery so quite an amazing deal. Got a couple more Rider RX on good Amazon uk offer atm but still not as amazing value as the SC33. I paid even more for the smaller SC32! Had been looking at another i3t in Titanium but went with the Rider instead for now. When I get the IF22a I might look at the charging thing but my USB C to C cable is tucked away with my Vintage O-lantern so I probably won't bother to dig it out. By far mostly I use/need USB-a to C or micro USB so don't think I will have a problem.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  9 месяцев назад +2

      Hi sorry for late reply im getting swamped with comments right now. yes no matter which way around i do it i get same result. i also have this issue with the new Sofirn HS41 although the Wurkkos FC13S i have on my test bench does not have this issue. Seems like they need to remember to properly do power delivery so charging from a power pack works.

    • @geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz
      @geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz 9 месяцев назад

      @@TrailTrek It's maybe a silly idea but did you try reversing the c-c cable ends just in case or different c-c cable, so first plug into the power bank and switch it on and then plug into the light and try it with the cable both ways just in case one end is wired differently. If that doesn't work then send all your lights to me as they are all rubbish and no use and you keep the Wurkkos and I will charge the others with my power bank and an A to C usb cable without any drama. I hope you realise I am lol-ing a lot when I comment on YT. It's either that or cry I suppose lol. Being serious though for a second, if you can get the Wurkkos to work without problem then it does seem that the other lights are not yet designed to charge C to C from a power bank and the maker has not implemented or tested this capability so basically forget it with the models that don't work and if it is important to you then don't buy another light without first checking if this function is available would be my thoughts on it. It's probably just early days still for c-c charging and torches as power banks but they will all do it eventually without issue I would imagine. I think at present if a torch sees a usb A source then it wants to draw power i.e. charge but if it sees a usb C connection at the other end then it wants to charge the other thing, in this case a power bank. Don't panic. It will all eventually get sorted, you are just an early adopter and so are seeing issues which you could report back to the brand maker and maybe the torches can get a software update perhaps? or they might send you a replacement. If important enough to you then probably worth dropping them a line asking about it.
