Going a slight step further, how does the TANK allow air in, to transfer fluid into the SMALL PISTON chamber? If the jack is turned upside down, I've never seen fluid leak out. Are there check valves at the TANK to allow air movement?
How do the check valves open and close? And why doesn't the big pressure in the big cylinder cause the fluid to back into the small cylinder while the check valve 2 is open?
There must be an air pocket inside the reservoir tank to allow oil to be pulled from the tank on the up-stroke of the handle, otherwise negative pressure would build up inside the tank and resist the up-stroke.
What I’m trying to wrap my head around is how this even works. I understand how the lever multiplies the hydrostatic force located underneath the large piston, but if the force under the large piston becomes so great that it can lift a car for example, why does it simply not destroy the small check valves? How can the check valves absorb that kind of force without being destroyed?
The check valves are very simple and strong - just a steel ball bearing resting in a machined iron or bronze seat. There is also a light spring that tends to hold the valve in the closed position. When the lever is pumped the fluid pressure pushes the ball off the seat, opening the valve for the duration of the stroke. Oh, and the valve body is the case of the jack itself. Again, very strong.
The force of pressure depends on the area (it's measured on pounds per square inch). This means that a very small check valve will also receive a very small force compared to the large piston, even though they're both under the same pressure. However, the body of the jack has an even bigger area since it has to contain all of the fluid, so that has to be even stronger than the large piston.
i didn't know the behaviour before .. but there is a little mistake in the picture/model ... the 'open valve' must be on a second/parallel pipe channel ... =) .... opposite every time that the fluid/oil is pushed it will come back on the primari camber

When there is a ton of weight on the jack is it better to lift the handle up or leave it down? Does it matter at what position it is?
The pump piston will be in the up or down position. I don't see much difference in this.

Short answer: spherical steel ball bearings are unbelievably strong
Sometimes it does.. and you won't be able to lift any heavyweight by using that jack.. In that case it needs to be repaired..
The check valves are very simple and strong - just a steel ball bearing resting in a machined iron or bronze seat. There is also a light spring that tends to hold the valve in the closed position. When the lever is pumped the fluid pressure pushes the ball off the seat, opening the valve for the duration of the stroke.

The breather is usually jack-mounted. Oil may leak from it if the jack is turned over
