When I first started The Shadowhunter Chronicles I was unaware of the different series so I’d started with City of Bones and was so hooked that I finished out the TMI series within a few days. Then I’d immediately read the entire Infernal Devices trilogy. From there I was confused on where to go next though I’d already purchased the rest of the books available like The Bane Chronicles, Shadowhunter Academy, The Dark Artifices, Ghosts of the Shadow Market, first two books from Eldest Curses & Chain of Gold. I’m so glad that you made this updated list and various ways to read!! I think I’m going to go with your suggested order at the end. Although I’ve read TMI & TID like a thousand times, I’m going to go back and read them your suggested way and finish out the rest of the books currently out so that everything is fresh in my mind. I’ve already preordered Chain of Iron too- I’ll be ready for it lol Btw, thank you for making a visual list/ order of the books!! It’s so much easier than trying to remember all of the titles that people ramble off in their order. Anyway, thanks again for the video I’ve been needing for a while :)

I'm sorry but the first book order just feels wrong. Especially if you're just starting the series and not rereading. (if you are rereading it's okay since you know what's going to happen).
One of the most important advices I can give new readers is to NOT read City of Heavenly Fire BEFORE finishing Clockwork Princess. It will spoil you for the whole series.
If you want to read by series then first read the first tree books of TMI, Then TID and then finish TMI. Since TMI was originally supposed to be trilogy, it doesn't even make you stop during the middle of the story.
Also you can't start with whatever book series you want. Either TMI or TID. TLH is about the descendants of the characters from TID and TDA has already started setting the story up in City of Heavenly Fire.

Hey, I'm a year late here but I need help! So I accidentally bought the The lord of shadows from TDA. Then I discovered that it'll be a while till I get there but I want the quickest route till the book. Could I just read TMI pt1, TID, TMI pt2 and then start the TDA?

If i read the first half of TMI, then TID, would it be fine to read the 3 books in THL, (because they follow TID) and thennn continue with TMI? I know the last book of TMI introduces TDA, so its either reading THL after The clockworks, or after all of the main series.

My comment has spoilers for all of these books, so beware that this isn't a comment for those who haven't read them!
When I started reading the Cassie Clare books, I believe The Dark Artifices had been announced but had not began publishing yet. So, basically, I just had The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series + The Bane Chronicles to read. I read them chronologically, which is typically not how people recommend taking in any form of media--usually people tell you to go by publication order. However, the reason I found my way of doing it nice (and I've read the books multiple different ways since, even since The Last Hours series was published) is because I got a lot more enjoyment out of seeing TID characters pop up in TMI than I would have if I read it the other way around. The only exception to that discovery is Magnus. I do think that seeing Magnus in TID would've been a cool Easter egg had I already known of him from TMI. But I find it far more impactful to meet Tessa and Jem in 1878, learn their stories, and then see them again in TMI. I mean, I suppose reading Brother Zachariah first in TMI and then reading Jem turning into him in TID afterward would've been a bit of a shock, but I don't actually think that surprise would have been good for me as a reader. It wouldn't have felt like an Easter egg like Magnus would have. I think it's much better to know who Brother Zachariah is going into TMI because you get to read Jem when the other characters are speaking to a Silent Brother. So, there's one reason for reading TID before TMI, but the other big one is Will. Oh, my goodness, it is incredible to get to know Will Herondale, arguably one of the best characters in the entire saga, and develop an image for how Herondales typically are, both from Cecily and Will just to move onto TMI and meet Jace. Now, guessing that Jace is a Herondale may or may not have been easy for people, but one thing I can say is that learning that Jace is a Herondale when you have Will as a reference makes the reveal so much more exciting and satisfying, especially because you get to say, "That makes so much sense!"
What I'll say also is that reading these books in a choppy way--i.e. reading parts of one series to move onto another in the middle and then picking the first one back up--isn't all that fun for me. Cassie's books get increasingly in-depth with the world building depending on the publication year, right? So, TID and the first three (actually, I'd say two) books of TMI don't have a whole lot of secret references within them to other series because, well, the expansive world hadn't been built yet. So, if you're like me and you like reading entire series without breaking them up, then reading TID first makes sense. TID does allude to TMI because it was published during TMI, but for the most part, it isn't as rife with references as, say, TDA was after having been a.) chronologically set after three other series (yes three because Cassie knew a lot about what she was doing with TLH when she was writing TDA) and b.) published after two other series (and some companion books). As I read TID first, I got the simpler demonstration of the world and then got to watch it build up through TMI into a very intricate world. I have read these books in actual chronological order (which is very choppy indeed, and I don't recommend it), and that basically means that I broke down even the short stories (and all the extras Cassie has published or posted online!) and read those when they were set. So, really, you'd start with (if we're nixing the extras and just talking about the bound books) the first few stories in TBC before moving on to TID, reading some Ghosts of the Shadow Market stories before moving onto TLH, etc. It's interesting to do that after having taken in everything once or twice because you're really reading a straight shot of these characters' histories, but they don't always flow together well in that order. For instance, GotSM has its own style, and jumping between those stories and the others is strange.
Now, TLH was written after all of this world building was done up and has so, so many allusions and references that it's ridiculous. It feels a lot more complex that TID, so moving chronologically from TID to TLH might be odd if you're doing it for the first time. In fact, it might even be a bit wasteful to read TLH second because you'd miss a bunch of allusions to TMI and TDA (mostly TDA). Doing it in that order once you know the whole series is totally fine and doesn't feel strange to read, but I'd say for first-timers (who shouldn't be reading this spoiler-filled post), going TID, TMI, TDA, then TLH (and eventually The Wicked Powers, TWP) is best. I had no choice but to read it after TDA because I was reading TDA and TLH as they published, and I found the natural publication order was best in those cases. As far as the companion (short story) collections, I've always read them in reference to the final story in the collection because that's always the most recent story in the set. Like, for example, the last story in TBC takes place during TMI. So, as I didn't want to read anything while reading TMI, I said, "Okay, since TBC's last story is during TMI, I'll read it right after I finished TMI." I'd say that's mostly a good rule to follow, though I understand it might be a bit annoying to feel done with a series only be thrown back into the middle of it with a story about how Magnus and Alec broke up that one time. That's really only a problem with TBC, though, since Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy is made up of flashbacks and other stories that are set firmly between TMI and TDA. As far as GotSM goes, read that right after TDA and before TLH because a.) you'll spoil TDA if you read it beforehand and b.) the stories set in earlier times are an absolute necessity to know before going into TLH.
I could go on about the extra stories, like The Penultimate Hours (which you should also read right before starting TLH) or the stories Cassie often puts at the back of her recent publications or online, but that'd take literally forever, and this comment is unnecessarily long anyway. As an aside, The Eldest Curses is another thing that very much has its own style, and you might prefer to read those all together because it references itself more than anything else, but also, I don't think it'd kill you to split that series up. Like, the first novel takes place in the middle of TMI, so read it right after TMI, read TDA and TftSA after that, and then read the second novel, which takes place after TftSA. Basically, I think you can read those pseudo-chronologically and be fine. To summarize, my first-time reading order--which is different from my re-read order (that one is: pseudo-chronological, as long as you don't split series)--is (not including any extras): TID, TMI, TBC, TftSA, TDA, GotSM, TLH, and, eventually, TWP. Actually, since Secrets of Blackthorn Hall will be bound soon, I'd read that somewhere between TDA and TWP. I don't know that SoBH would flow as well being read after TLH because it hints at stuff that's in the final TLH novel. I think, ultimately, it'll be better to read SoBH between GotSM and TLH. Anyway, that's it. If any of you read this, I'm sorry. Goodbye.

I personally like reading series in Chronological logical order and technically if you think about it you shouldn’t get spoiled because the events in the later books hasn’t happened so I don’t think you will get spoilt but there might be some things that are less surprising but I’m not 100% sure as most of the series it has been years since I have read it. But the best way would probably be to read publication order or by trilogies but always read the elders curses when they are set chronologically. Hope this helped
