Very sad but also beautiful. Sad for the loss of time. Beautiful for fighting for wanting a life with someone you love and finishing your education.
I can so relate to your story, but i didn't ever get the chance to see my father again. He past while i was away and i blame myself for his death. He didn't get sick until i left. Thank you for sharing your story.
Don’t fault your parents for their valid concerns. By running away, you proved that you weren’t mature enough to make the right decision.
You graduated from high school, signed up for college and got kicked out. Why didn’t you attend class, graduate, get a job, move out with your boyfriend the right way? I’m sure your parents would’ve accepted your boyfriend if you were making good life decisions.
Your end message shows that being a doctor does not make you a well rounded person. Don’t encourage parents to let their kids date whomever. You should’ve encouraged parents to have healthy discussions with their kids and set boundaries. Life does stop because you can’t have a boyfriend in high school 😂.
Hmong parents are different from other parents but they do raised some great kids
Your father became sick because he loved you so much. At least you know that he loved you with all his heart. It’s very normal for parents to be concerned about who their children chooses to love but I would be heartbroken if my child ran away and never wrote me a letter or phoned me. You can’t live with regrets though. You can only learn from your doings and move forward. Rip to your dad. Now you can focus on your mom and the relationship you have with your siblings.
I am sure ur parents meant everything for good. The chance of a black partner will love u for a long time is slim thats why they want to stop u. Ur partner is the most loving but ur parents didnt know that so they r taking by chance. Now u have children u surely will understand.

Lady, the route you took is unacceptable to any loving parents. Your degrees cannot erase your wrongs. It’s easy to say this and that when you were the one who pulled the trigger. You will understand better when one day you wear your parents’ shoes.
Is there ever a time, we as the children, ever have a choice, but living out our parents selfish desires?
It's good to see she man up to her decision but it's too late for all the time lost. It's sad but at the same time, she did it to herself regardless of how her life turned out. She'll never be able to tell her dad she loves him. That's on her. It's her life and she has to deal with it. She just happened to be one of the fortunate ones.
Many hmong children in the last 30 years caused their parents to die due to stress and depression. Disobedient children never see their parents suffer. Don't ever go back to your family when you leave and F up. Deal with your own F up and don't become a burden to your family. If your were able to leave, stay gone. Many go back home with their children or divorced and expect the parents or family to just forgive and forget. Get real!!
I guess in this generation, you married who you love and happy you didn’t waste your life away. Only thing you did wrong was you did not let your parents know where you are and that you are doing ok.

I get it sometime you have to follow your heart but to stay away from your parents for 10+ years? Bc they disapprove your love? And to disappear from the face of the earth from the ones that gave life to you shows how ungrateful you were. Esp when u know how much they loved you. Smh
Parents will sometime disapprove of a choice you make, whether its a career, a relationship etc, but u keep in touch and fight it out. Not run off for 10+ yrs and act as if they dont exist. You worry them to death. Never make your parents drop a tear. Im glad things worked out for u at the end with your love life but now i suppose you'll just have to live with the sorrows that you caused for ur dad. Spent time wisely with ur mom as she is the only parent you have left.

Our parents raised by old traditions....Thats why our generation is so fucked...up. I get it......Pressure is something we all need to understand and work with. I have 4 boys....I brought my kids up with their happiness...NoT MINES....They all graduated college with Master.....I get it but this generation is changing
I believe the reason both your kidney shut down is because you married someone out of your size...Dr. or not you will live a short live since you only share one of your husband kidney. Enjoy your life as much as you can. My auntie only live up to 15yr after she got kidney surgery!

This lady sounds like everyone should praised her cause she followed her heart and we all should take her and her boyfriend out to celebrate I do have black friends but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna lay down with one I know the pain will cause my parents and how this gonna make they feel around their friends and at the end her dad went to the grave without h alploized or hearin her apology her mother might’ve forgiven her but the father probably went to the gav feeling the same as the day she told tho nice story but I have to say something I will say thumbs down

Why didn’t you at least contact your parents to let them know that you were alive? They were worried sick that something bad happened to you. I have a daughter too so I know how they felt but luckily my daughter isn’t bad. I’m sure if you hung in there, your parents would’ve eventually accepted your husband. Well, you have kids too so be prepared to go through what your parents went through.

Don’t be too hard on yourself sister. You were young and in love while your parents were quite racist. Racism is an unfair, unreasonable, selfish, and irrational request of someone who doesn’t have the same biases as you. Your parents chose their racist bias against someone you’re in love with, also means they chose being racist over you. Everybody deals with ultimatum differently. Even as an adult, if someone gives me an ultimatum, I would have not chosen them too.

Parents cannot tell your kids, who they can and cannot date or marry. That's wrong! We don't know if marrying a Hmong or not will work either. Stop being ignorant!

Lady, you were wrong in so many ways. Yes, I know what love and acceptance are. But you didn't have to run away and disappear for the sake of it. I'm happy you found love! Life don't always go the way we want, but you make a good choice that benefits you in the long run. Love can always turn us blind. All parents would want their kids to have a good life. Your dad saw that at the end, which makes him happy to leave.

Sister, I'm in the same situation just like yours..my parents disapprove of my husband too because, he's not our kind,his from laos, I decided to ran off with him, till now I am still with my husband, he's just an amazing man, it's one of the best decisions I've made,when I decided to ran off with him..I don't regret what I do,and the decisions that I made...you're absolutely right, when we become parents, we treat our children's differently, because we dont want to lose them,like our parents lose us for so many yrs..

Sister, the main issue here is the fact that you departed from your parents intentionally and left them hanging without closure. I could understand why your brothers put your dad in the nursing home, they didn’t trigger his stroke and I am sure they have tried to take his mind off of you, but because you left him hanging he couldn’t stop thinking of you everyday- that is his unconditional love. It’s unfortunate things went the way it did for you and your family, but let it be a lesson learned.
Her father's unconditional love should include accepting who she loves. When her father refused to accept who she loves, it's no longer unconditional love. It's under the condition that she loves a Hmong guy in order for her father to accept the both of them.
She should have at least contacted her parents to let them know that she is alive and ok. Her dad was worried sick because he didn’t know what happened to her. It was very wrong of her to leave her parents worried. Maybe someday she will understand her parents’ pain.
I have something to say to the lady the daughter. I know you loved your dad but you choose your husband because of loved. That’s why your dad passed away of worries and sadness a d depression. For my opinion to you lady even though your parent didn’t except him it’s okay but running away is the wrong choice because it will hunt you for the rest of your life.
Because the disappointment and disapproval made it feel like she had to run away in order to be with her love. It’s more likely the parents fault.

She would not have been successful at life if she stayed. As soon as she graduated her mom wanted her to work. Didnt even encourage her to continue schooling. Look at her other siblings who stayed with the parents and ended up putting them in a old folks home and abandoning them. Imagine what her life would have been like if she stayed. She made the right choice by choosing her future.
