A very good friend on mine was in fact the real doctor on the love boat Dr Mike S Ewer. He, along with the old master Captain Mork, both took a nostalgic trip for the final time in 2014 on the Discovery to see how much had changed on their old vessel.
Chris, you’re welcome to contact me I now live in New York City. Yes I worked as a Cruise Director, assistant Cruise Director, and deputy Cruise Director on Princess Cruises from 1992 to 2012. I spent a lot of time on the original ‘Love Boats’ the Island princess and Pacific Princess and I loved both those small ships. Hope to meet you one day for a cruise chat. All the best to you. Frankie Verroca.
I'm lucky to say that I worked on the first Sky Princess (prior Sitmar Fairsky)and Royal Princess. But I had the chance to get aboard both Island and Pacific Princess when we ran into them on any port. Thanks for sharing about these two icónic Vessels.
Nice video on the ships. I sailed several times on the Sun Princess, Island Princess and Pacific Princess during the 80s. Life on board was very different then and the memories are good.
Thank you, Chris. Appreciate your research and presentation of ship and cruise line history. Interesting to get some 'behind the scenes' information on The Love Boat.
We Still Love Watching The Old Love Boat TV Series. 😀 We Were On The Discovery Princess Love Boat Themed Cruise October 2022 And Got To Meet The Remaining Love Boat Cast. What A Wonderful Cruise That Was. Thank You For Sharing Some Love Boat History
2:50 alert Alert ALERT! Captain Hudson photo bomb! Thanks for the video, born in 71 The Love Boat was pretty formative TV for me in Canada. Have always loved ocean liners and cruise ships and it started with what I watch on The Love Boat. A music video was filmed on the ship in 2010 before scrapping, its a must watch Mistura Pura "Angels On A Cruise". keep up the amazing channel, love to you all :)
The original Princess Love Boat used in the made for TV movie and original pilots was the Sun Princess (original P&O Spirit of London). You should do a video on that ship.
Alas, someone else remembers the oft-forgotten Sun Princess. She was originally being built for NCL (Norwegian) to be named Seaward, designed with the NCL twin funnels (side-by-side). A dispute with the shipyard, if memory serves, caused NCL to walk away. P&O Line took over and named her Spirit of London - as mentioned. P&O transferred her to Princess as Sun Princess. At 17000 tons, she was smaller than the more famous twins - less elegant perhaps. Pacific and Island were more luxurious and iconic with their domed Lido Decks and terraced aft decks with another pool. If memory serves, she sailed some shorter sailings out of San Pedro while the twins did the round-trips to Acapulco and back, as well as Alaska, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, etc. Sun also went to Alaska. Sun was also featured on Columbo and other TV shows and in at least one film.
I was fortunate enough to sail on the Island Princess on a Black Sea cruise in 2012, after the ship was purchased by Voyages of Discovery and the ship was renamed Discovery. What a great experience standing along side the captain while he docked the ship from the small outdoor bridge that was used when docking. The ship was old and not much by today's standard, but it was one of my favorite cruises of the more than 100 cruises I've taken on numerous cruise lines. Thanks for the history. ruclips.net/video/xeG51Qz3v7c/видео.html
Chris, one major correction. Flagship Cruises (Sea Venture and Island Venture) never competed with the then West Coast U.S. sailings of Princess. Rather, they were intended to compete with Home Lines SS Oceanic (which most consider the first purposely built cruise ship of our time) and SS Atlantic in hot NYC market. Sea Venture the first of the 2 came onto the NYC market with a coveted downtown Hamilton Bermuda berthing location and for a while that was all very exclusive to them. Oceanic was too big to dock in downtown Hamilton. SS Atlantic once she came out was then able to do the same and compete with Sea Venture.
Thanks for the message. I meant the comment in so much as competed for US customers but you’re right, given the different operational locations, I should have been more specific. That said, Princess did operate a light schedule of east coast sailings including transatlantic cruises (from 1968) and Panama Canal transits (from 1967). I’ll be more careful with my wording going forward and appreciate the feedback.
Thank you Chris , of course great history , of these two great ships, that encouraged me to get into the cruise biz . I started my career aboard , Viking princess, left and went to ocean cruise lines. And yes i sailed on the ocean princess, ( princess itala ) then to RCCL , furthering my career in sails .thanks again 👍
We saw the Pacific Princess in port next to our ship in the late 90's, she looked small. What great memories. It's a shame this boat was cut up for scrap metal.
Hi Chris another interesting video im totally confused now as I did the Maiden Voyage on the Spirit of London with P&O and always thought that she became one of the ships used in the Love Boat. Could you please share a little information about her just to clarify things for me. Many Thanks Tony.
wish they would bring back the 700 passenger LOVE BOATS and base them out of Baltimore so they wouldn't be in competition with Carnival's Panorama making its runs to the Mexican Riviera...
Have you ever sailed on The Love Boat?

Fascinating history
For those who are unaware, the cast from the television series "The Love Boat", are the godparents of the Regal Princess.
Thank you, Chris.

@@DMRossi I worked on the Spirit of Londons maiden voyage out of Southampton seems like a lifetime ago but lots of great memories

The ships now have the music as their whistles
2:18 That ship's officer has obviously been taking the stairs.
Fantastic

Is that captain Hudson I see hiding in the background?
It is! He loves the Love Boat tv shows so he had to be in that video 🤣

That’s a great cruise career path you have there!

Thanks Tony. Spirit of London was renamed Sun Princess and was indeed one of the extra ships used for Love Boat filming!
@@ChrisFrameOfficial Thanks Chris I thought she was.

Great video but the Love Boat was a terrible show and Princess cruises has run out of ideas in 2024.
