  • Ultimate Adventure has been a bucket list trip for me for almost 2 decades. In today's video we will take our Toyota Tacoma on Ultimate Adventure 2022 and see how our little 2021 taco can handle a few days of real trail abuse. We broke stuff, we made friends and had an amazing adventure because ‪@onXOffroad‬ was willing to help me check this off of the bucket list! So, thank you OnX and thank you folks for watching!

I'm impressed the rack and front diff held up. More-so the diff, I think the rack was an upgrade from a Landcruiser if I remember correctly. Make sense that the front subframe wasn't up to the task. A little reinforcement for the rack mounting locations will help. Same thing you'd need to do with a frame mounted steering box.
Having aftermarket front CV shafts is a huge plus on this truck. If those were stock shafts or joints I wouldn't have been surprised if you broke one.
For that bolt that keeps backing out check into some distorted thread lock nuts. McMaster also has flex-top lock nuts. I've never used them though.
Looks like the truck held up really well. Awesome job on the build.

Those are some really intense wheeling, but it is so much more impressive to film these footage yourself at the same time. Full respect Nate! Btw, does your RCV clicks? I can hear some clicking but not sure if it was them. My fairly new RCVs click and pop sometimes. RCV told me this is normal because of harder material. But at the same time, they also say clicking is a sign for rebuild. Not very consistent messages.

Would be great to know more about where it’s coming from if you have any info on it!

When you had the upper control arm nut and bolt come loose.
Is there anyway of doing a double nut lock on the upper control arm.
Say a slightly thinner nut first to hold it all together then a lock nut of some kind, like a nylon lock nut.
So you can lock the two nuts together to try and stop the bolt and nut of the upper control arm from coming loose or worse loosing the nut and possibly the bolt of the upper control arm.
You could make the front skid plate from stainless steel say 16 - 12 gauge or standered 18 gauge for strength and lightness it will be heavier than aluminium but lighter than standard steel.
On your tyre's try going for a thicker ply tyre say for eg:
    8ply to 12ply
    12ply to 16ply.
If I am getting this right that the thicker wall of the tyre is stiffer but also a bit more robust to splitting.
They are my thoughts on some of the thing that came up after your trip, you may have a better idea than what I have.
But most of all one wicked ride. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
From Philip Burrows in Overton on Dee, Wrexham, Wales, UK.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  Год назад +1

The double nut trick is an oldie but a goodie. And I'm still debating on how to proceed with the front skid. Tube can work as a great skid and shave weight but some thinner/higher tensile strength steel would be easy. 👍

The duratrac was my fault the stt pro this year I’m hoping was just a fluke. I’ve had them for two years with this being the first issue. Idk what to think about the patagonias because I see other people like Matt’s recovery have great success with them.

Awesome to see how that thing continues to evolve, and great video. One idea to get the front to flex more (I had the same problem on my GX) would be to put a sway bar on the rear. A correctly placed antirock bar with some long arms may do the trick to try to keep the rear more level forcing the front to flex, but still not stopping the rear from full articulation when needed.

I am not a IFS hater, but it has 2 major drawbacks in my book. You need to be very wide to get good travel out of the front. Secondly, unless you start with a 86-89 4runner or pickup, the body clearance sucks on newer vehicles. My problem is not the IFS it is usually the platform it comes on.

Dang, I have heard of that upper A-Arm bolt coming loose on folks.
    2 things I've heard broadly.
1.) It's a 1 time use bolt thats torque to yield
2.) You should loctite it during an install of any upper A-Arm.
Pro tip from the Toyota manual, based on the orientation of the bolt from the factory, you cut it off the first time, and install the other way moving forward.
The con to that of course is the need of loctite given that the bolt that can walk off if it comes loose (like it did here).

Hunting season just started, oh yeah my 20th anniversary is this week I should probably be home for that. My wife and I seen you drive thru our small town here in western Montana last year with the land Rover behind the motor home. At first we were not sure if it was you then you posted up about the ghost town and the fires that we had going on here. It looks like you had a good time with those guys on UA . I still refer to your build series on different projects that I have going on. Do you think that you will be able to work on the LBDT this year? That's what actually got me watching your channel. Had lower oil pressure crawling on rocks too. 17 TRD OR. Build not LT. doesn’t matter if it was flat or include slow crawl under 1000rpm in 4wd low I had a manual I would get low oil pressure and the truck would stall. This is the fail safe cutting ignition preventing damage. Never figured it out till my DI Pump failed and found a worn cam. Fixed it and upgraded to a TJ. SO I think I did haha. Does your ever smoke oil out the exhaust on steel inclines ?

I think Lite Brite started the fad of the Patagonia tires. Soon after, Brad (trailrecon) had them, Matt (MOOR) had them and still does, you, and many others. It's pretty obvious it was started as a sponsor promo as Lite Brite has Nitto sponsor now. Brad has BFG's now, and others have moved to something else. I'd love to see you sponsored by Nitto or Toyo. In my opinion they are the best over all. Before I bought Toyo's I looked at the Patagonia's just to see what the hype was about. The first thing I noticed was the weak sidewalls. I couldn't see how those were holding up to LB and others. I just couldn't do it. Thank gawd! I don't blame anyone for having a sponsor. I do think everyone should do their own research prior and not follow any fad.

After watching this, I'm not sure any tire could survive at the pressure you run. I saw several times where the tire was squished flat to the rim against some of the rocks. Might need a couple more pounds to save the sidewalls.

I spied Ian Johnson from Xtreme Offroad / Four Wheeler / Big Tire Garage make a cameo appearance there @ 8:02.
