In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television-a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite-and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

Yeah, the reality is that the novel wasn't that great at ALL. The concept was awesome, but the story was meandering and didn't really seem to highlight the gravitas of the situation that they were in. It should have been way more frantic and King should have further highlighted the anxiety they were going through. It was depicted like a very dangerous camping excursion with randoms rather than a life or death situation.
The Arnold movie made it WAY more high-stakes (as it should have been) and depicted the seriousness of the situation even with a bit of lampooning going on. Never for a moment did you think the guys were safe or that the situation wasn't that serious. Hopefully they take the concept of King's novel but gives it the gravitas and danger of Arnold's film.

Richard Dawson was the combination of two different characters in that adaptation. He was great in the role as it was for that movie, but if his character had just been the producer and not the host as well, we wouldn't be discussing him.
A lot of the 80s adaptation is exclusive to that film, not the novel, so let's leave what came with that film with it. Seeing as how this adaptation is closer to the novel, that's the only comparison needed.

On one hand I am excited they are making this "closer" to the book, and note the quotation marks. The book filled you with a sense of paranoia and dread like you were the one being hunted, not Ben. Then the trailer comes out and it looks at times to be more like Deadpool mixed with Scott Pilgrim and thus taking away the seriousness of it, especially the message the book conveys. Plus I still say there is no way they are going to do the full on book ending despite what is in the trailer.
