A tale of home, yearning, booze, conflict, pride, and love, Johnny and Joel must come to an ultimatum to save their relationship as they sail across the Atlantic aboard The S.S. Krill.
I guess the real gay pirate opera was the friends we railed along the way

They were shipmates! Oh my god they were shipmates!

Hi, I'm not certified in any way to speak on this, I have had no classes on this nothing like that, so if someone more qualified to talk about this shows up listen to them, but I do have a hyperfixation on pirates. Mate/Matie wasn't a term used for just anyone. Pirates were a largely queer culture, most ships recognized queer marriage the same as straight marrige, there were many trans pirates ect. the sterotype of pirates calling eachother mate/ matie is sparked in reality, because it was a very common thing to call a partner. a lot of the time married pirates called eachother mate/matie, the average person saw two dudes using those names for eachother and just went "yeah, pirates just call eachother that" basically, so, yeah!Johnny and Joel were mateys!
Historians describe them as "good pals"
lmfao this is so accurate

This is Billy’s magnum opus, this will go down as the best gay opera of all time
*Twin Fantasy would like to know your location*
I've never heard a straight opera before.
But you're also not wrong.
Does the Ram Ranch Cinematic Universe count as a gay opera?
Gay?
This is honestly some of Billy cobbs best work. I enjoyed zerwee 1 and 2, heck I love all of Billy's work, but this just hits hard for me. Not cause I'm gay or nothin but the epic lovestory between Joel and Johnny. When you listen to Billy's old song, and listen to them in chronological order, you can hear him slowly refine and work on his style of song writing. His skill has been increasing and I believe that this album is an amazing representation of Cobbs unforseen ability to be one of the greats from his insane vocals and understandment of music theory to just plain great song writing. I know people are complaining on the subreddit right now saying it was OK and the love story between Joel and Johnny is bad, but I don't care cause I love this album mainly because it is an allegory for love and the constant knowledge that you will never have everything that you want because life is like that. So if anyone is reading this, thank you for taking your time to read this, if Mr. Cobb is reading this then I want to say thank you for the great music you have created over the years, and I look forward to see on the billboard 100 for your future work. Billy, your music can only get better from here, keep up the great work champ.

1) this is an absolute masterpiece
2) does Joel end up going with at the end? The lyrics say yes, but the mood says no, and then the album ends. the last track almost feels like his fantasy.
3) who is the narrator of New York Boys? I never thought I'd say "the kazoo solo on that gay pirate rock opera sends me every time" but here we are.
1: I always read it like he leaves with Johnny, seems to be what the story's leading into.
2: Could be an off reading, but I always thought that it an "unrelated" song that plays while Joel gets drunk and possibly hooks up with someone else.
For the third one, it was either Joel and a one-night-stand, but something caught my ear on my last listen, the lyrics say "when I woke up next morning, I had an aching head. And there was I 'Jack' all alone..." the same thing is done in the next lyric. I don't know if 'Jack' is an adverb or a name. I like the idea of it being a name, and 'Jack' is basically Billy's character, a fellow pirate and the narrator of 'Johny and Joel' and (possibly) 'the wedding'. Conclusion? I've put way too much thought into this...
i honestly think the ending is meant to be interpreted as how the listener sees fit. want a tragedy that haunts johnny and joel for the rest of their lives? then joel stays. want a gay romance that doesn't have to end in heartbreak? then joel goes.
for New York Boys could it be Johnny who's the narrator, since he calls himself "I, Jack all alone" and Jack is nickname for John/Johnny. That being said, Jack could just be a completely different character or even a crew member wandering off to see some New York boys and to characterize New York? It's very much a weird placement of the song.
dude predicted Our Flag Means Death
"I wont give it away" he said, "It will be subtle", he said.
Hey comment section,
I thought you might like to know that there were actual gay pirate weddings that took place historically at some points in time during the Pirate Era. Pirates were often very lonely spending months to even years on a ship as outlaws. A lot of pirates didn't mind men getting married on their ships, and the captains would often perform the matrimony.
The Wedding was my favorite song on the album for this reason as well as just how fucking good it is. Anyway, thought that was interesting.
Ik it's adorable.
it's actually where the word "matey" comes from, oddly enough. cuz you know, can't call them your wife if your both husbands, or vice versa.
on what source do you base all of that? also what is adorable about relationship out of loneliness between criminals, r--pists, murderers and thiefs?
do u have some reading recommendations on this topic?
@@Kalash39 Look up the pirate term "mateolage". It's written in the book Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean and describes in detail how pirate men used to marry each other for company, money and belongings as well as protection.
This is a primary source because the book was written by a historian B.R. Brug.
Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean - B.R. Burg New York University Press, 1983
Burg expresses that European society accepted that men in company of men without access to women commonly engaged in homosexuality (the act of). He cites this as not just referring to sailors but to men too poor to afford a wife (or the requisite home), etc.
As for adorable...I don't think it was adorable. Not for pirates anyway. Most of thier Mateys were sexually abused, scammed, taken advantage of, beaten and bruised and were just treated horribly by thier mate. It is fairly interesting though
But what is adorable is that this wasn't just common for pirates, but also European sailors in the 1600s. They would often have ceremonies and same-sex relationships since they were too far from home to be with any woman.
I never thought Carl Wheezer covers could lead me to something this amazing...
ultra same
I forgot those were a thing and I was very taken aback for a moment… I have to go lie down for a moment 😵💫

JOHNNY AND JOEL MIGHT JUST LAST
Love the use of sound work, frogs, nature sounds, boats, and overall immersion
And nice inspiration (maybe) for the final song, made me think of a pan flute cover of All my loving

mm
I think the frog sounds are purposeful and symbolic, since frogs are amphibious (meaning they live both on land and in the sea) and that is basically the opposite of Johnny and Joel, who live on the sea and on the land respectively.
thanks cobberino! im gay AND a pirate now! yeehaw!

the ending of “Farewell Dearest Joel” might represent how songs immortalize real feelings by real people, but so often they can become hummed lyrics or even just drinking songs, losing the feeling they were originally written with. Or am i looking too much into it?
When I got to the end I sat in silence and contemplated my entire life. I’m not sure what to do with myself right now
I still don't even understand how it ended. Did they part ways or not?
“New York Boys” is so heartbreaking how dare you make it so fast and such a bop
@The Gummy Chair hey could you explain what you mean by it being heartbreaking? I love this album but I'm hard of hearing and can't understand much of New York Boys.
@@doctorbone3655 I could very well be wrong because I can't hear the lyrics too well but I believe what happened is that Joel got blackout drunk and slept with another man

THE GAY PIRATE OPERA HAS ARRIVED MY FELLOW COBBIANS
I thought this was going to be short, and I got excited to see it was a full album
Idk if this is what happened but my head cannon of the ending is super depressing. Johnny promises Joel he’ll stay with him on land but he gets called back out to sea because the captain who married them died and he has to take over. He writes a goodbye note to Joel who after he reads it, decides he loves Johnny more than the land and he steals a small boat to follow the SS Krill. Joel catches up and boards the boat at night to surprise Johnny but one of the drunken crew mistakes Joel for a thief and shoots him. Johnny finds him and buries him on the island where Joel sang the enticement of land, promising to visit his grave in the spring
I really like your interpretation of it. The ending definitely hit hard. :(
