Hello! : ) I am thinking to buy this camera to my father, and I would like to know your opinion about it. My father will do 83 years old tomorrow and I would like to know if this camera is simple enough to a person who do not have much practice with technology. I know that my father will not use the more complicated options, so I wanted to know if this camera has the possibility of being very simple, and if he can take pictures using the most basic, without having to use all the options that the camera offers. I don't know if I explained well what I mean, I hope so... : ) I know there are simpler cameras to buy, but I would like to buy a good one and one that do good photos, and looking for one to buy, I found that one... and this camera don't have many buttons. If you can answer me, I will appreciate... I would like to buy it today (or not) so I can give it tomorrow to my father... Thank you in advanced! : ) 24.02.2017
WIS666S2 Hi there, its a great quality camera in a small package. i does have a full auto mode so your father can just press the shutter and go. Canon have a very good auto mode and it should still provide great photos! The only issue is that everything is pretty much done through the touchscreen as there are only a few buttons. If he would be okay with that then yes go for it!
Yes you can have full manual, Av, Tv or P in both video and photo modes, and it's the same on the original and Mark II. The reviewer was wrong about video lacking manual controls but it is admittedly harder to find as they aren't on the top dial but after switching to movie on the top dial then pressing the mode.
Regarding 7:00, you need to switch to manual video mode by pressing menu or tapping the video icon. Boom. No more auto change. Can also lock exposure by tapping the asterisk.
I have one. This is the smallest camera with a 1" sensor. It is much more pocketable than any of the Sony RX100 models or the Canon G7X. The point of this camera is to be small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket. That is why it does not have a folding screen. You can take it with you everywhere. If you want more features, then go with a larger camera. For a cheaper alternative, the Fuji XQ1 or XQ2 are about the same size and produce great photos from their 2/3" sensor. No touchscreen though.
How does the image quality compare to the Powershot G7X mark ii or the Sony RX100 line? I know you said the Sony is better, but how much better? I'm trying to decide if it's worth the extra weight and money to buy the G7X mark ii or RX100 for someone just shooting in auto mode on vacation.

Bought one and I have to point something out; It does have a full manual movie mode. It can even do slower than 30fps (which is great for me as I sometimes digitize 8mm films at 24fps, 25 is then a bit of a lifesaver ;))
There is an option to manually set aperture and/or shutter speed for video. Switch video mode to "manual" (hit the movie icon top left and select) - then you can set all manually.
Yeah, price has come down, it's $430 as I type this now. Still kind of high for a point & shoot. I'm sure the 1" sensor cost them significantly more than the 1/1.7" one...
Quite a different reaction reading the specs and trying it out for a day. Somehow the spirit of the S-series (other than price) is in here with a 1" format. Particularly a very comfortably pocketable camera, more so that rX100.
Scene modes and RAW are mutually exclusive. RAW files do not contain the scene information (color settings, white balance, exposure etc) and will not display as you shot them in scene mode when transferred to the computer. My Sony A6000 will shoot scenes in RAW but the actual file displays like every other RAW file. It's confusing for the end user so they chose to leave it out. I don't blame them since as an end user you feel you are taking a different picture than is being saved on the media. The RAW market for small pocket point and shoots has to be small.
Hello dear! Thanks for the video. I got a question. I can't decide Between G9x ii and G7x ii which one is the choice to spend the money too. Please recommend me. Thanks
Yes nice that Canon has come out with 5 new models with 1 inch sensors - all using the same Sony RX100m3 sensor :) - not a problem - many others buy sensors from Sony - To me the lens is the let down - just like that of the original Sony RX100 - so one is so much better of with the G7X and G5X - yes the G7X a bit thicker but so much better in low light and longer focal range of 24-100 vs 24-80 Yes the IS and Touch LCD are nice - I think the Sony RX100m3 is somewhere in the middle - has an EVF as a bonus - but no Touch LCD or Shutter which is a downer - Yes Touch Shutter is awesome - Panasonic and Olympus have let the way there - especially Panasonic - the RX100m4 is way to much money I think - I say the 4k is just a sales ploy - 5min max 4k video - for me in warm climate I get 3 min before it overheats - so to me it is just worthless - so really the RX100m3 a better value to me - maybe the RX100m5 will be better :) I find my Canon G7X does better in tracking focus over my RX100m4 - I also find the Mic's on my Canon G7X and G3X are better - My hope is that Panasonic enters this market and combines the best from the RX100m4 and the G7X and G5X - with their usual great Touch interface and Touch shutter :) as the price will be lower then that of the Sony RX100 models - Fuji has the X70 coming in 2016 with a 1 inch sensor but odds are it will be the body of the X30 which is much larger - The G9X is the thinnest 1 inch sensor body so if one needs that ultra small size it is a good option -
i just got the g9x and LOVE it!! thx for the video which made me pull the trigger! But Ted, just a heads up though, you CAN have full manual control in Video even while recording videos (shutter/aperture/iso/autofocus/manualfocus)!! You just have to make sure your in Video Manual Mode, which is in Menu button --> Rec. Mode! Cheers
The audio seems really good! I used to shoot in travels with PowerShot cameras, maybe i should consider it again, looking on how they improve these little bears.
I'm having a doubt buying the G9x or the G7x. Any recommendations? I'm planning on using the camera during my travels. I've recently moved to Europe and am planning on visiting different countries in the upcoming months. Which one should I get?
I got the Canon Powershot S120 and i agree with you, the price is just way 2much. It should of price at $400 or $430 the most. I think for $560 after tax and shipping it's not going to sell well
Do you actually use this in any situation over the RX100 mk4? I can't see how this would be superior unless you really love the touch shutter or the IS is really that much better than the Sony. This lens seems inferior, with much slower aperture.
I thought this would be a good camera for making my RUclips videos. I just need something simple for shooting close up videos while doing dart reviews. I would also like something with a slo-mo feature. Any ideas please? Budget is $400-$500. Thanks
There´s a mark2 but looks pretty similar. The procesator move from 6 to 7 version and no much more. The new version is USD 50 more expensive in Amazon. It worth the extra money? I know is no much more, but with this money i can buy a case, protector for the screen, 2 extra batterys and a remote control (a lot). I hope you see this, and thanks!.
Hey Ted, have you ever tried or reviewed the Canon g3x? I'd be totally sold on the g5x if it had a mic input... I see the g3x does but I'm skeptical as it has no viewfinder... Guess you can't have it all! I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it.
Should I buy this camera? I'm having a hard time deciding...I own Fuji, Nikon, and Sony. Which I never use. I also have the Canon D10 for underwater shots and a very old slim Canon SD780 which I love for the size. I recently dropped it and broke the battery latch. So now on the hunt for a new pocket size camera. The G9X caught my eye for the 1" sensor, Wifi, and touch screen, however, like you said, not sure if it's worth the price. Street price $430. Ouch! That's way more than I want to spend.
These are at completely different range than the SD780. Sure the price is more. I can only say than when I have decided between two cameras and chosen the more expensive I have never regretted. When I have chosen the cheaper I have always regretted. If you use the camera for four years, it is under $10 a month.
thanks for your thoughts. Do you think that the G7x may be a better investment? I am looking to shoot video - want something that is an upgrade from my phone or camcorder but something small and simple to use. I have several DSLRs that don't shoot video so I'm looking for something I can literally put into my pocket. I do tutorials on youtube as well so I was thinking the G7x may be better since it has a good screen. Advice? thank you!
Thank you for the thoughtful review. At 11:53 you say "Sony S110", but I'm sure you meant "Canon S110". I noticed because we're both Canon S110 owners, and I was paying close attention. :-) The S110, etc., and this G9 X are incredibly small cameras. The sensor upgrade on the X models is a major attraction. There's usually a price drop following camera introductions, so perhaps I'll wait for that.
The touch screen eliminates the camera from consideration for those of us who are underwater photographers. I realize underwater photographers are probably a very small percentage of potential buyers, but something for Canon to consider. Maybe give the user an option for dial or touch screen?
Really not sure why anyone would go for this when you could have the G7x with it's better lens and control. Is the size of the camera that important compared to the G7x? I don't know.
I don't know if there's been an update in the firmware, but the G9x now have a manual control over the video and can shoot raw... or maybe Canon is simply lying on his website
what do you think about dealing with the very low capacity battery problem? i've seen in some review it only last for 220 shoot without wifi, and probably it'll fall drastically if wifi turned on
I am by no means a photographer, I'm looking for something that can take much better pictures than my iPhone 6s. As I'm sure you know, on the iPhone screen all pictures pretty much look the same, but when you blow them up you see the difference immediately, and there's no way I would ever print an iPhone picture. I'm leaning towards this option because I like the idea that it's pocketable, but, forgive my ignorance, are the pictures going to be vastly improved in quality over an iPhone 6s? I've seen dozens of the sample pictures, and while some do look beautiful, others look like typical muted grainy digital camera pictures. Do you have any thoughts? At this point the price as come down, it's $429 on Amazon with a 32gb memory card included. Thanks a lot for your review!
i was in the same dilemma, let me assure you though, this tiny beast is almost have the size of my s7 edge and the picture quality is significantly better than any smartphone. That 1" sensor really makes a huge difference, I even fooled around with a SX720 also and the G9X is a much superior camera aswell. Its kind of the perfect sweet spot!! Its funny because it is very true that when you take pictures on phone, they always look nice but move them on the computer with big screen, (especially with screen of 2k/4k resolution) , you can see right away the quality difference! If i were you i would buy it from a big branch store (ie bestbuy, for super easy return policy) and worst case if you really dont think its worth it just return it... i doubt you would though
I love this review and this camera. The one innovation I wish it had was a mic input (or Bluetooth mic input). That would be a great option with the app feature. There is not a "flip screen" but the app allows you to see what you are shooting to some degree. I love the quality of this for the money. Question... Are there any point and shoot cameras in this range that includes a mic input?
thanks for the video apart from the really annoying ad in the middle - AAARGH!! i bought one a while ago because it can shoot RAW, however, i can't open its RAW files on my aging computer running windows xp. can't upgrade my software on xp, (no problems with RAW from my canon 450d). i didn't realise that RAW was not a standard format, like jpeg. i'm furious, as the camera was ridiculously expensive. still trying to work out all its piddling little icons. i have problems with the movable focus point when out & about in sunny conditions, as i can't see where it is on the screen and i seem to frequently move it accidentally! (now saving up for a new laptop & software to get those RAW files going, so making this camera even more expensive to use!) i do like its portability and the fact that it has 2 attachments for a neck strap! (must try that focus & snap hint you mentioned - when i can see the screen!)
Hi , first thanks for this review, is this camera have wi-fi? Right now I have Sony rx100 mark 2 , and I'm quite happy with it so far , so do you recommend to get the G9X ? or to upgrade to rx100 mark 4 , I have to mention that I'm shooting stills only , not a huge fan of videos or vloging , thanks again :)
Disappointing about the lens aperture range, at full zoom, you should be able to get at least some separation from your subject and the background, even if it's slight, on something with f2.8. That's one of the reasons I went with the Fuji x30 (got it on a great Amazon warehouse deal). Many of these cameras aren't worth the initial asking price, IMHO.
Hi Great Video. I just spent 500 euro on this camera here. [Ireland] because I just want to point a shoot. I hope I can do that? the guy in the camera shop said once you keep it on automatic you wont have any problems and If you want to change anything you have the option of cropping it later. I'm off to Vietnam in March so I wanted to bring something that I don't have to put a lot of work into and I hope I have made the right choice. . Would you agree the quality of the pics will be excellent?
Thanks Ted. Nice thoughts and perfect timing. I've been looking for a point and shoot for my Mom the last couple of days and I pretty much narrowed it down to this one, the Canon S120, and the Sony HX90V. The Sony is much cheaper and has a super zoom, but she currently has an older Canon that she is used to using. The Canon S120 is even cheaper than the Sony, but is getting a little old at this point. Decisions decisions.
+The Art of Photography Great video!!!! i'm still hesitate between the G7x and the G9x but i know the G7x have an annoying noisy autofocus... Do the G9x has that problem too?
I am a concert photographer, but occasionally prefer to shoot guerrilla style with a small camera from the crowd so I am not limited to shooting a bands first few songs. I used to prefer a Sony NEX but some venues started seeing this with the larger lenses as a professional camera and causing trouble. Since then I've shot a Sony R100mII and R100mkIII (the later is better with noise, but didn't have the zoom range of the former. I suppose the camera that would be perfect would be small with a decent zoom, and have excellent low light capabilities. If this camera would be better or if your can think of another, I'm all ears! Thx, M-
This camera is good. I really like the sitze but the G7x has more Zoom, a brighter lens and more control wheels. Especially for portraits is a f 2.2 at 50mm really great.
You did a first look at the Sony RX100iv some months ago and ended with a comment that you would post a full review after you had used the camera for a while. Where is that review??? Nowhere to be seen but you now do a review of the Canon G9X. WHY??
Can you recommend a camera model for me? I am a tour guide an looking for a compact camera with a movable viewing screen in order for me to take photos and short videos whilst hiking.. Many thanks
I'm on a real budget, looking for a compact camera on eBay. Are there Any you have owned and highly recommend, as maybe last years great compact, that's now a bargain price? I'm thinking an older model Sony or canon...
Nice video . BTW there actually IS manual mode during video recording. You have to first turn the dial to video mode. Then it is the first option in the menu, or the quick setting on the top left of the screen. I thought it didn't have manual video also, because I usually just press the video record button while the dial is in another photo mode, but it requires the dial to be in video mode.
Great review, very informative! Bang on about the price, though. At that price point you're really not choosing between this or another point n shoot, but the G9 x vs the Rebel SL1. The rebel has allot of similar functionality (touch screen, servo ai focus tracking, etc) but offers full manual video control and interchangeable EF-mount lenses, for the same price. Even though it is larger, it's very small and light for a dslr. If this G9 x were $300 I'd put one in my kit, but at $500 I'd grab an SL1 as a backup / walk-around body instead.
In Australia the midday summer sun is exceptionally bright. You have to use your own shadow to see smart phone screens. Without a viewfinder, how do you think this camera will perform when only "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun"?
Steven Kaye it’s way better. I love that I can shoot in Raw, especially for landscape shots. The video of the iPhone X and even the iPhone 8 is way better. In lower light this is better though.
I'm looking for a sub-300$ camera, similiar to this. even used the G9X (first versions even) are still going for 350$ or so. I'd consider a cerified refurb, but i'm looking for a non-DSLR camera in the sub-300$ range and I just cannot find anything I like. also been looking at stuff like the Panasonic ZS100 and Sony RX100. any recommendations? Most of what i would be shooting would be up-close technical stuff that I can convert to 3d model and then 3d print, some stuff larger, like vehicles, planes, engines, etc.
Do you want to waste $250 or use $400 to get a good camera. Cheap cameras have a 7.7 mm sensor and f/3-3.5 aperture. This has a 15.75 mm sensor and f/2 aperture. It lets in over ten times the light. There is a reason to buy those if you want a long zoom and the image quality is not important. Get a Canon SX 620 HS. When you will get disappointed and will get a G9 X after that you at last have a spare battery and a charger.
Canon just loaned me a G7X for vlogging. I have been enjoying it.

Why is this $450 camera being compared to a $950 Sony Rx100 Mk IV?

What exactly do you want to know? It has an f-stop of f4.9 at the lens' telephoto position and a x3 optical zoom.
Bought one and I have to point something out; It does have a full manual movie mode. It can even do slower than 30fps (which is great for me as I sometimes digitize 8mm films at 24fps, 25 is then a bit of a lifesaver ;))
The Audio is stellar for a P&S !
What camera were you using when you were shooting angles of the G9x? I though that quality looked better.
Quite a different reaction reading the specs and trying it out for a day. Somehow the spirit of the S-series (other than price) is in here with a 1" format. Particularly a very comfortably pocketable camera, more so that rX100.
Just to let you know there is a Manual Video mode when you press video icon at the top left - so you can change ISO, Aperure and Shutter Speed.
Thanks
Yes nice that Canon has come out with 5 new models with 1 inch sensors - all using the same Sony RX100m3 sensor :) - not a problem - many others buy sensors from Sony - To me the lens is the let down - just like that of the original Sony RX100 - so one is so much better of with the G7X and G5X - yes the G7X a bit thicker but so much better in low light and longer focal range of 24-100 vs 24-80
Yes the IS and Touch LCD are nice -
I think the Sony RX100m3 is somewhere in the middle - has an EVF as a bonus - but no Touch LCD or Shutter which is a downer -
Yes Touch Shutter is awesome - Panasonic and Olympus have let the way there - especially Panasonic -
the RX100m4 is way to much money I think - I say the 4k is just a sales ploy - 5min max 4k video - for me in warm climate I get 3 min before it overheats - so to me it is just worthless - so really the RX100m3 a better value to me - maybe the RX100m5 will be better :)
I find my Canon G7X does better in tracking focus over my RX100m4 - I also find the Mic's on my Canon G7X and G3X are better -
My hope is that Panasonic enters this market and combines the best from the RX100m4 and the G7X and G5X - with their usual great Touch interface and Touch shutter :) as the price will be lower then that of the Sony RX100 models -
Fuji has the X70 coming in 2016 with a 1 inch sensor but odds are it will be the body of the X30 which is much larger -
The G9X is the thinnest 1 inch sensor body so if one needs that ultra small size it is a good option -
The grain pattern is actually really nice! Very organic looking!
i just got the g9x and LOVE it!! thx for the video which made me pull the trigger!
I think for $560 after tax and shipping it's not going to sell well
Aside from the price is this the best point and shoot camera in your opinion?
Do you actually use this in any situation over the RX100 mk4? I can't see how this would be superior unless you really love the touch shutter or the IS is really that much better than the Sony. This lens seems inferior, with much slower aperture.
+Rediscover Film no, but look at the price difference... apples and oranges.
+Daniel Duarte I disagree. You can get the RX100 mk1 for less than the G9X. I'd still take the older Sony over this Canon.
I thought this would be a good camera for making my RUclips videos. I just need something simple for shooting close up videos while doing dart reviews. I would also like something with a slo-mo feature. Any ideas please? Budget is $400-$500. Thanks
For your information, the G1X Mark II has a 1.5 inches sensor.
What was the FPS on the video you filmed with the G9x? Can that be changed?
The flip-screen is the deal breaker for me. I'm going with the g7. Thanks for making the video.
June 2018: It's got a rebate right now. Total price including tax = $389.00. Better than $500! Ted, do you think it's worth it?
Advice? thank you!
Great video!!!! i'm still hesitate between the G7x and the G9x but i know the G7x have an annoying noisy autofocus... Do the G9x has that problem too?
I think I'd rather have the g7x just for the exposure compensation dial.
With the price point being at $399 at most major retailers now, do you feel this is a fair price for this camera?
Really not sure why anyone would go for this when you could have the G7x with it's better lens and control. Is the size of the camera that important compared to the G7x? I don't know.
what do you think g9x or m10??
I like this camera a lot.,i have so many cameras sistem and this is perfect for Long exposure

Canon has this on sale right now for $299. Should I pull the trigger??
Thinking of buying this to shoot clips from a concert. Will it hold? Can I ask what is the zoom capacity for this one? And memory? Thank you.
How's the battery life compared to the s series.
thanks for the video apart from the really annoying ad in the middle - AAARGH!! i bought one a while ago because it can shoot RAW, however, i can't open its RAW files on my aging computer running windows xp. can't upgrade my software on xp, (no problems with RAW from my canon 450d). i didn't realise that RAW was not a standard format, like jpeg. i'm furious, as the camera was ridiculously expensive. still trying to work out all its piddling little icons. i have problems with the movable focus point when out & about in sunny conditions, as i can't see where it is on the screen and i seem to frequently move it accidentally!
Right now I have Sony rx100 mark 2 , and I'm quite happy with it so far , so do you recommend to get the G9X ? or to upgrade to rx100 mark 4 , I have to mention that I'm shooting stills only , not a huge fan of videos or vloging , thanks again :)
looks like you were right about the price, just dropped down to $399 usd this month
Then is a YES or NOT?????
Thank you for the review been waiting for a review on the G9X.
What do you think about the canon sx720
Roman atwood uses the g9x and it's really nice
I have a 310hs, is it worth upgrading from what I already have?
very good video.
Do the camera have any thing for shaky hands taking pics and no blur?
I really like your camera color you took this vlog.Do you mind to tell you use which camera for this? Skin tone look really good. Thanks in advance.
It's ok in my opinion but is it not behind the Sony rx100 versions in every single way?
+Jon Bushell No, it costs hundreds of dollars less. and it's more compact.
@@Smaug1 not anymore
Disappointing about the lens aperture range, at full zoom, you should be able to get at least some separation from your subject and the background, even if it's slight, on something with f2.8. That's one of the reasons I went with the Fuji x30 (got it on a great Amazon warehouse deal). Many of these cameras aren't worth the initial asking price, IMHO.
That drop to F4 caught my ear too.
This G9X is all about the size and the slower lens was the compromise that had to be made. If you want brighter lens you can buy the G7X.
is the lense built in or can i change it?
The camera u are using ? What kind it
Hi Great Video.
+wolfywho you might wait and see if there are any black Friday deals as well - this camera is new so there could be some good pricing.
Does this work well in low light?
TheBirthOfJackie should work decently due to stabilisation and 1 inch type sensor.
You did a first look at the Sony RX100iv some months ago and ended with a comment that you would post a full review after you had used the camera for a while. Where is that review??? Nowhere to be seen but you now do a review of the Canon G9X. WHY??
Thanks you for dis video y was thinking between G7x or G9x now i see you're video G9x is the one
OH YES! You ted Have always been the best. Have been looking at your videos since, you had them on iTunes. I'm a Huge Fan Ted!
What kind of camera did you shoot this on, (other than the part utilizing the G9 X)?
a5100
hi! can you lock the exposure and/or the white balance while taking a video?
OhMyGosh!!! I love it!!! So clean and fast. Lovin that f2 ❤️
Can you recommend a camera model for me? I am a tour guide an looking for a compact camera with a movable viewing screen in order for me to take photos and short videos whilst hiking.. Many thanks
Canon G7 X is over $550. The retail on the G9 X is $399 to $449.
this or the g7x? plz answer!
+JabbaDaHat TV Definitely G7x. The spec. are almost identical. G7x is a well build compact camera with flip screen.
Asian Madness thnx
I'm on a real budget, looking for a compact camera on eBay.
Are there Any you have owned and highly recommend, as maybe last years great compact, that's now a bargain price?
I'm thinking an older model Sony or canon...
+Christopher Sears thanks Christopher I'll check those out on eBay 😀
+Christopher Sears and also property room
They do NOT have an one inch sensor! Not at all! It is just 16.4 mm (64% of an inch, 25.4mm). Please double check with Pythagoras.
Which one would you recommend - Sony Alpha a5000 or G9X ?!!
+thegreatantz if you like good vid , get G9X. if you prefer good image quality, a5000 great choice.
+Lucky Cheng Purchased a5100 finally... :)
but you can only get good video if you have good image quality?
ted please help me, which 1 u choose g7x II vs g9x? love from ur true fans
In Australia the midday summer sun is exceptionally bright. You have to use your own shadow to see smart phone screens. Without a viewfinder, how do you think this camera will perform when only "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun"?
I liked it right up to the point where everything is touch screen.
The G7 X has the movable screen which is better actually... What do you think?
Is there a difference between canon power shot g9x and g9x mark ii?
Mainly the newer processor. Mark II has faster burst rates and overall faster operation, Bluetooth and built in raw developing.
Is the quality of the pictures as good as the latest iphone?
Steven Kaye it’s way better. I love that I can shoot in Raw, especially for landscape shots. The video of the iPhone X and even the iPhone 8 is way better. In lower light this is better though.
Does it have exposure lock?
How quick does it autofocus ?
If someone could tell me where to find a mirror less canon camera which shoots in 4K?
No canon cameras shoot 4k
Another excellent video! Congratulations on job well done.
If you buy in in Hong Kong, it is only $385 USD. It is very competitive!
What is the radius of the barrel of the lens?
When you will get disappointed and will get a G9 X after that you at last have a spare battery and a charger.
,Sony Rx100 Mk IV? you could buy 2 of the canons plus memory cards, bad comparison.
