I grew up with this radio man. Once I was in the shower when it went off. Scared me nearly to death 💀
Idk not that scary. Then again I’m used to hearing alert tones at the fire department all the time. I can see why other it may bother them.
Weather alerts MUST be loud for safety reasons. That could be why you can't lower the volume.
Once I got a Tornado watch at 4 in the morning and from our kitchen the watch tone played for a few minutes... not to mention it is completely dark and has a sliding glass door

0:52 they have different SAME receive tones as well. Watch SAME tones are longer than warnings. For advisories/tests idk
Same tones vary in length based on the amount of data needed for the alert. WEA is the same way, just at a higher bit rate.

My dad has this thing in our basement and everytime I hear it I about shit myself. I’ve been home alone or downstairs at night and I book my ass upstairs. Scariest thing ever made 😰
May I suggest depends under garments.
My dad would have this thing sit on my parents’ nightstand. So when it would go off, it’d be full blast into their ears. I always about shit myself too lol

0:41 what i never get in my midland weather radio 120, probably i might get it in province wide test alert because i live in alberta.
I live in Tennessee, & they run tests every week. Talk about annoying.
what's the pilot tone for
It's to signal the weather radio that an emergency alert has been issued. If the weather radio fails to play the alert tone, that's what you'll hear instead.

Mines only makes the warning alert type beep on all weather alerts.
It might be fake.
Mine is set to go off for test but it has never gone off for a test before?

When you receive a test message from your local NWS. It will not play in silent mode.
