Hmm, something productive? Well, productive to me would be something that advances yourself or your community. So how about something emotional? *clears throat* I first heard and fell in love with this song about 7 months into 2020 (so around July-ish). Throughout the next 5 months, it became one of the few songs I'd play repetitively, especially in my car either on the way to see my best friend (we'll call him Carlon) or driving around with him in my car. Around January 2021, I obsessed over this song and a couple others (I'll name them below). It was something I could really hold onto with my nails dug in. He'd decided to commit suicide December 21st, 2020 and this was something that really kept his image in my head because I was so terrified I'd forget what he'd looked like. It was my first real instance with a death that truly impacted me. I've dealt with death before: buddy of mine died I a motorcycle accident, lost 3 of my grandparents, had another buddy die from fent overdose...but I hadn't been extremely close with these people. Sure, I loved them and wasn't happy they were gone, but it wasn't until losing someone who'd been my rock for 10 solid years that I realized I wasn't immune to the after effects death, specifically suicide, brings. I'd assumed I was heartless or just dead inside, but in reality, I'd just never experienced true loss. He was as close as a brother to me and I will never forget the moment I found out. I'd only seen him hours before and when no one could reach him, I assumed he just needed some time and silence. It wasn't until he ignored my pleas for contact (something he'd never done in 10 years, no matter how upset or angry), that I began to panic and throw shit in my car to see him. His ex (the girl who cheated on him and set off his initial mood and heartache the day prior) called me just before I was about to leave and all she could seem to say was "Luna, I'm so sorry". It took me screaming at her "J, what the fuck is going on" before she could say "he's gone". I couldn't even make it into the house. I literally tried to open the door, screamed, and felt my body slam against the glass of the door before my husband came running outside where he found me unable to breathe. Once he took the phone, the look in his own eyes just made me realize the gravity of it all. Because he'd never actually seen me in a state like that, all he could do was sit down beside me and try and pull me together again. I felt responsible for months and months afterward. I'd said I would drive down to be with him during that emotional time, but after he said he would be fine and it was up to me, I made the stupid decision to stay home and give him space (and I should have driven just as he'd done for me before- its actually how I met my husband-he wanted me to feel better after a breakup, took me wall climbing where we say 2 russian guys climbing, and he said "ok, there's 2 flirting with you, pick one and we'll invite him to the lake to jump off the boulder and from that day, I've been with my husband and I owe it all to Carlon). That thought haunted me for a long time. I would beg and pray that ghosts were real. I would scream at him from wherever he was. I would hallucinate that he was in the room or appeared in my car. It was bad. It also made me realize that one day, I'm going to lose my dad, my mom, my siblings, and that I may lose my husband before I go. And that only amplified that horrible experience. Now, 3 years later, and I'm finally able to live a semi normal life after being prescribed antidepressants and spending 5 months writing a piece of music that I could put all those emotions into (ended up dedicating it in his memory). I still struggle making friends and some songs, such as this one and a few by KFlay (he loved KFlay) bring me back to that experience, but also help me remember him clearly. Since his passing, I've had a daughter and am about to have my second and my oldest reminds me so much of him. Her fearlessness, her desire to learn and be outside, her love of animals, especially dogs, and how she's so determined to conquer everything. I have a photo of him hanging on the wall in our shared room and she is so fascinated with his photo and loves to point it out and hold it. Had I still believed in anything, I'd think his soul had been in her. Unfortunately, that's just not how life and death work. But, it's fun to see that energetic personality so full of life remind me so much of someone who quite literally helped lay the groundwork for my own life. Without him, I'd have never met my husband, had my daughters, never experienced some if the cool adventures, and never ventured out to be as daring as I am now. So yeah, this song will forever be a favorite of mine as it keeps that memory I still have of him alive. It may be 2024, but it takes me back to before December 2020 and I want to keep it that way.
