Great idea! I have a no sump reef. I tried a DIY chaeto algae reactor. it was an epic fail because the led lights melted my reactor. This looks promising. Thanks for providing awesome products.
Would love to have a scrubber like this. I have a Waterbox 75.2 and it would work great for my small sump. Your videos are always very informative and helpful. Thanks!
Thanks for the nice install vid. Good to see placement, bubbles, shade cloth, etc. The HOG1 is too small to filter this big of a tank of course, but the concepts will still apply to AIO and smaller FW tanks where it works best.
Nice. Well back before 2012 I was just making waterfalls, which I created in 2008. These are the open source ones everyone builds today. The bubble upflows are patented, but are still very easy to DIY.
It should be interesting to see the follow up. I would think you may need something bigger to get any significant nutrient export for that large of tank though. It’d probably be a good size for my 60 gal though ☺️
Probably too small. The HOG1 is for 1 cube of frozen food per day, and a breeder is probably fed more. Two of the HOG1 units is probably good, or a larger HOG, or a RAIN2 or SURF2. Of course you could always start with one HOG1 and see how it goes.
I really like it but it’s too loud what if you hook up a small water pump the the inlet of the air hose to give it water flow? It’ll be a lot more quiet
Hi Jesse... you need air bubbles to create the turbulent air/water interface that removes the boundary layer around the algae, in order to get rapid algae growth. Water flow is not that important.
Hi there, sorry about the magnets; I don't recall your name if you contacted us, but we would not have just sent you to ebay, because there are five or six other options too. Also, since we thickened up the sealant, there has not been a rusted magnet since (been about 2 years now).
Santa Monica Filtration ok.. I called and spoke to 2 different people. I have emails if you like. I was sent to ebay to buy them. No worries. I have a real scrubber now that works great. But thanks for calling me a liar.
Santa Monica Filtration it was a while ago.. I spoke to someone through facebook and someone at the company via email, so technically I never actually "spoke" to anyone. It doesn't matter because I cut the thin plastic it's made of trying to get all the rust off in the silicone. So happy reefing!
Have looked at Santa Monica for awhile now but never watched a review! Thank you for being very thorough!
Awesome idea for an algae scrubber and small enough to add to any sump.
Looks cool can't wait for an update
When will we see the update - very curious.
I love my Rain 2 Santa Monica filtrations algae scrubber! Great overview!
Great idea! I have a no sump reef. I tried a DIY chaeto algae reactor. it was an epic fail because the led lights melted my reactor. This looks promising. Thanks for providing awesome products.
Wow that's terrible. Well one thing about our LEDs is that they don't heat the acrylic wall at all.
Can't wait for the follow-up on this.
man i was just debating on installing a algae scrubber or not!!!! crazy! thiswould be perfect for my reef tank!!
Looks like a great addition to my setup
I have been looking into getting one for my tank. Can't wait to see the update.
always wanted to try one of these
Nice product! This would be great on my 29!
Always wanted to try an algae scrubber. These look well built
Looking forward to the results, it's definatly something I'd consider on my aquarium
Setting up another tank. This would be great!
Looks really nice, I'm looking forward for the update
Would love to have a scrubber like this. I have a Waterbox 75.2 and it would work great for my small sump. Your videos are always very informative and helpful. Thanks!
looking forward to trying 1 out someday.
Always wanted to try one.
looks cool, looking forward to seeing how well it does
Really nice setup!
Nice and easy
Would love this on my tank. I’m excited..
My friend had one of these. Seemed to work well.
I'm interested in the follow up video to see how this works out. I've been looking at these and they seem like they might work well.
Would be perfect for my reef! Thanks for doing this!
Would love to have this in my upcoming tank!
Awesome! I would love to try that :)
Great product for a nano aquarium
Cool would love to have one of these
I am interested in seeing how it actually does. I made a macro algae reactor but was thinking of something like this instead.
Very interested to see the follow-up.
Looks like a cool product.
Looks easy enough. Would love to try one! #preminumaquatics #santamonica
Thanks for the nice install vid. Good to see placement, bubbles, shade cloth, etc. The HOG1 is too small to filter this big of a tank of course, but the concepts will still apply to AIO and smaller FW tanks where it works best.
I’ve been looking at these. It’s a sign.
These are excellent for small tanks like all in one systems or a small sump that can't use a refugium.
And for larger tanks, or refugiums, the SURFs or RAINs are great
Pretty cool!
I am too I tested in the light bleed. I have a AIO with a tinted back glass and worried it can cause the growth in my tank.
I've never seen the light cause any growth there.
This would work perfectly in my tank!
Interesting device. Where’s the follow up video?
The video was just for unboxing/installation demonstration, not for operation, because the tank is too big.
This is cool! Would love to have one.
Looking forward to seeing how it does. I agree with the comment that it is too loud though. They are also very expensive.
Hi Duane, they are very easy to DIY :)
Also consider the RAIN models... dead silent
I didn't even know they made hang on glass algae scrubbers. This will help since i don't have a sump.
Wow Terrence we've been making them since 2012, and they were our first version :)
I just got back into the hobby about 5 months ago after a 8 year hiatus. college set me back lol.
Nice. Well back before 2012 I was just making waterfalls, which I created in 2008. These are the open source ones everyone builds today. The bubble upflows are patented, but are still very easy to DIY.
Good video review
Perfect !!! For my biocube !!
Hi. I cant find the follow up video. Did the product work at all? Thanks
It should be interesting to see the follow up. I would think you may need something bigger to get any significant nutrient export for that large of tank though. It’d probably be a good size for my 60 gal though ☺️
Hi Travis, correct it is too small to filter his tank but it's just for demonstration.
Would love to win this for the zero edge build
I've' had one in the past, the .2 drop version. Worked well for me in the past. Just noisy though. other than that well worth the investment.
Glad you liked the nano drop. If your next tank is bigger, a RAIN2 would be silent.
there was no follow up video for this?
Can’t go wrong with Santa Monica!!
What pump did you use for it? Sorry if I missed it somewhere
The HOG1 can use most small air pumps.
Is there a follow up video?
This is exactly what I need for my tank. Can’t keep a refugium alive since it’s a AIO.
So cool!
I'd like to see how much and how long it grows algea. Is it a replacement for macroalgea?
Hi Mike. It is macroalgae.
Santa Monica Filtration how is it macro? It looks like a screen and lights. I'm not trying to be disagreeable, but I'm curious.
It grows algae inside it
I hope you post a long term video. I'd love to see it in action.
Will this work on my 40 gallon breeder
Probably too small. The HOG1 is for 1 cube of frozen food per day, and a breeder is probably fed more. Two of the HOG1 units is probably good, or a larger HOG, or a RAIN2 or SURF2. Of course you could always start with one HOG1 and see how it goes.
I really like it but it’s too loud what if you hook up a small water pump the the inlet of the air hose to give it water flow? It’ll be a lot more quiet
Absolutely amazing You guys are top notch and very impressive!
Hi Jesse... you need air bubbles to create the turbulent air/water interface that removes the boundary layer around the algae, in order to get rapid algae growth. Water flow is not that important.
Santa Monica Filtration oh ok it’s an awesome item but it’s kinda loud
You can consider then the RAIN scrubbers, which are dead silent
Nioce!
Wow, Nice.
Nice
I keep hoping these will get smaller and self cleaning one day.
Smaller would be less algae and less filtering. But self cleaning is nice :)

Should have waited to release with the result now i just have to wait instead of sending bills your way lol
Okay, interesting 🤔
Its awesome products. But dont get in India. I was winner in cjs aquarium contest but courier charges was very high
Yes they can be shipped to India
Oh suprise its the mad hatter 🤣
Did it work? Lolz
Had one and all 4 magnets rusted.. They told me to get new ones on ebay. Terrible customer service, imo.

We only have one person who answers a phone, which would be me. You might have called a different place.

Very low profile, ultra low maintenance (ULM) reef filtration. Cuts down on your nutrients.
