A.R. Rahman’s work on the “Taal” soundtrack is more than just music-it’s a powerful testament to the idea that art knows no boundaries, cultural or otherwise. As a white lad growing up surrounded by Western music, the experience of listening to “Taal” was nothing short of revelatory. It was like discovering a new language that, despite being foreign, felt instantly familiar and deeply resonant.
The Western world has had its share of transformative musical moments-The Beatles’ British Invasion being one of the most iconic. The Beatles didn’t just bring British rock and roll to America; they fused various musical influences, from blues and country to Indian classical music, creating something entirely new. This blending of styles broke down cultural barriers and united people across the globe through a shared love of music.
When I first listened to “Taal,” I felt something similar. Rahman’s compositions are a masterful blend of traditional Indian music and Western elements. Tracks like “Taal Se Taal Mila” and “Ishq Bina” mix classical Indian instruments with contemporary beats, creating a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly new. As someone accustomed to Western music, the rhythms and melodies in “Taal” were an exciting departure from the norm-yet, they still struck a deep chord within me.
This fusion didn’t just create beautiful music; it built bridges between cultures. In a world that often feels divided by differences, “Taal” was a reminder of how art can bring us together. Rahman didn’t just borrow from Western music; he wove it into the fabric of Indian sounds, creating a musical tapestry that transcended cultural boundaries.
Listening to “Taal” as a Westerner, I didn’t feel like an outsider looking in; instead, I felt like I was part of something larger-an experience that united listeners from different backgrounds through a shared appreciation of beauty and emotion. The music didn’t highlight our differences; it celebrated our common humanity.
This kind of cultural blending, where the best elements of different traditions come together to create something entirely new, is rare. Just as The Beatles’ music broke down cultural barriers and created a global phenomenon, Rahman’s “Taal” did something similar. It showed that music could be a unifying force, capable of bringing together diverse audiences and creating something that resonates universally.
For me, “Taal” wasn’t just an introduction to Indian music-it was a realization that music has the power to unite, to create understanding, and to build connections where there were none before. In a time when the world can feel increasingly divided, the experience of listening to “Taal” stands as a powerful reminder of the beauty that comes from blending cultures and the profound impact it can have on our lives.
This album will be heard for decades. One of the best master piece of AR Rahman, Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan Ji and many more including those on vocals.... Just brilliant....
I am leaving my comment here as a love and respect for AR Rehman Sir and all the singers who worked only for music neither for money nor for fame. Mark my words this album would always be on top list not just for decades but till the music plays any part of the world ❤️ Hats off to this masterpiece 🙏

Nahin saamne tu mere pas hai tu .... Hariharan .. the background score consisting humming is simply ethereal and haunt me in my dream every now n then ..the beat pattern the church bells the violin bowing .. unexplained simple n majectic sound scape never heard of before .. A R Rahman proves his mettle once again .. Gracious Grandeur ...

Listening this album 198th time. Excitement level never gone 0% lower. This is the finest piece of sir ARR ever.
This the the only music which introduced Indian music in such an advanced level and make the World become crazy for Indian music.
Thank you sir AR
I remember seeing this movie at 5 or 6 years old and I was so fascinated by the movie and the Indian culture. I am 24 years old and still always amaze me every time me and my family see it! This is far my favorite Bollywood movie! Did I also say that I am Mexican?? Well I am and I don't even know how to dance, but this makes me want to learn their choreography!
My uncle (teen age boy back then) bought the cassette and hid it under his pillow. Every now and then he'd listen to it and look at picture of Rai. He died this year of heart failure leaving four kids behind. Rest in peace, uncle Ratan.
A. R. Rahman is the real hero of Taal. I watched the whole movie because of the music. Not only the songs but the background music is also too good. God bless A.R.
90's kids are blessed. If anyone hears to Rehman's composition heartfully they will fall in love with his magic music irrespective of language. He is a legend...
I am 42 now , but still i like the songs of my young age. Taal always brings my college days back. My Boss Speakers Yamaha Amplifier and me. Beautiful memories 🙂
Super ❤🎉

Music was released on Compact Disc in 1999, which is a new trend then, and a new rage among music lovers of AR Rahaman Sir and Subhash Ghai Sir. Entire album is All Time Best
Yes, even I'm one of those people who didn't even understand these songs when the movie was released, and still sang them along with the cassettes! I am listening to the entire album at once for the first time in YEARS! Oh MY GOD! The impact is so freaking POWERFUL! How can one simply listen to it without a thousand rushing overwhelming emotions, goosebumps and tears of sheer happiness from such extraordinary music! I didn't realise this at all at the time but TAAL was so ahead of time! So experimental, beautifully and intricately crafted. AR Rahman is one of the geniuses in the world, not just the country.
I hear Rahman's music always. But taal is something special....no words to say...absolutely TOP...deserves more than Oscar....Each and every song cannot b compared...Excellent...expecting similar compositions which is not happening now...
One of my favourite movie and song's Thanq so much respected A.R Rehaman sir and all singer's are making the beautiful moments when we r listen the any songs of Taal we r all keep calm and silent
This is one of the finest album composed by Maestro AR Rehman.. This music was relevant in past, is relevant in present and will be relevant in future.
Sonu Nigam, Richa Sharma, Sukhi pajji, Alka Yagnik, Asha Bhosle, Udit Narayan, Hariharan, Sujatha, Anuradha Sriram, Madhu Vaishali, Shoma, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Aditya Narayan and ARR himself
Bollywood will never ever get such albums
I have listened to the Taal album for 12 hours straight while on a coast to coast road trip across USA, and then repeated it the next day. This music album has no match in the world. Full credit to the sound engineer for the amazing transparency in the recording.
I agree...bro
all thanks to god of music..ar rahman
Not the sound engineer but ARR
I am surprised of all the legendary artists involved in this fabulous album, you chose to congratulate the sound engineer.

These songs will ever remain in the hearts of everyone...years are not a parameter...
Such a heart touching and soulful creation..only Rahman can create such wonders... he might have received Oscar based on his creation with SDM but, trust me, pick any album like Taal etc, he should have own multiple Oscars many many years ago...
Just see number of A's in the movie Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai,Akshaye Khanna,A.R.Rahman,Anand Bakshi, Asha Bhosle,Alkayagnik,Aditya Narayan, Amrish puri,Aloknath
बिछड़ के भी मुझसे जुदा तो नहीं ख़फ़ा है मगर बेवफ़ा तो नहीं....what a line yaar... amazing...
Amazing lyrics and Extremely Excellent Extraordinary music, which nobody forgot as it gives a pure essence of definition of love just like our sir A.R. Rehman who believes in using different types of music instruments
What a masterpiece of album by my musical legend A R Rahman Sir....still remember buying the audio cassette of this movie in July or Aug 1999....Each of the songs outdo the other in terms of quality....after so many years, tried listening the cassette on my old tape recorder, though the audio was out of place due to the age of the cassette, the magic the album creates is still in tact...As a 12 year old, the songs blew me away when it first released....ARR Sir must have had a blast recording all the songs of the album...this album will never grow old with time as its striking quality is the blend of Indian & Western Classical in the correct proportion....Am proud to live in the era where celebration of music existed in the form of AR Rahman Sir....No other can pull off such a hard hitting album with sheer variety & maintaining its ethnicity in tact...

When this album released i used to listen to it on my Old Phillips cassette Player. Today I'm listening it on my wireless soundbar entertainment system! More than decade passed but this album still has its Magic. My fav track Kariye Na!!
Kariye Naa is such a great blend of folk sounds , highly underrated

Today's generation will never know what this album meant for us 90's kids!! We all used to have those TIPS/VENUS cassettes & a radio cum tape recorder/player... Walkman was an asset!! Oh god, those were the days!!

Best Work of A.R.Rahman sir! What a spellbinding album!
Peaceful music, we lost somewhere. what a great composing of A R Rahman boss !!! That 90’s time.
Platinum standard album. Remember listening to it in a 2 in 1 tape player, now listening the same album in amplifier system feels kind of other worldly music, Rahman was soo much advanced from those days itself what a composer a gift for us all.

I am from Bangladesh. I have the question in my mind as well how could this album didn’t win the national award. Not this one only every album of A R Rahman deserves awards.
Bolywood cheap politics to south Indian musicians, but Rehman doesn't need cheap awards..
This movie was epic, just after the massive success of hum dil de chuke sanam world over, Aishwarya Rai was seen in this movie. Just after an award winning performance she was there was another award winning performance. Hum dil de chuke sanam was the breakthrough of her career & after Taal she went right at number one. She conquered another world after conquering Miss World........ God bless you Queen of bollywood!
This music is beyond time limits.Brings back old days. I wish I could run back to those days.Modern time is too Harsh.
Song Writer then composer Then singers everyone one made this beautiful, cheerful awesome music.
Bollywood must keep competition of writing such Songs so that they would find best lyrics. Otherwise we ll forget music, we ll only listen fast words, sentences and raps.
Sure ARR was possessed while composing this album. He has set extremely high standards.. EVERGREEN! ❤

Taal's songs are more audible, music 🎶 of AR Rahman sir just peace of mind & sole.
if you're a true lover of music, you can't possibly not like this soundtrack! so good! AR Rahman what a legend....
Abhijeet Anand I don't know what music has to do with religion. And let me clear that he is as creative as he was in 92. He works predominately in Tamil industry. You should go and listen to his recent Tamil albums like Kaatru Velliyidai, AYM, I, 24 etc.. And moreover as far as Hindi is considered how can one ignore Rockstar, Raanjhanaa, JTHJ. He has been awarded the National Award for Mom this year. Just your taste of music has changed coz of some Himeshs, Honey Singhs, Armaans etc, ARR is still just like what he was in 92. May God bless him.

100% Right
Subhradeep Biswas not only bollywood, Indian filmy music
Subhradeep Biswas you are undervaluing efforts of earlier music directors. A R Rehman is not doubt one of greatest music composer of this time but we also have had SD Burman and RD Burman creating musical miracles in the golden era of Indian Music when technology was not much available.
Rajesh Sachdev yes
Subhradeep Biswas rd burman do you forgot him
In 90s, A.R was way ahead of other composers of that time. Similarly, in 2000s, his work was much better than the new composers. And in this decade, he is still on the top. It must be noted that most of music directors of 90s couldn't survive in 2000s. Similarly composers of 2000s found it difficult to work in this decade.
One thing is clear that A.R's music is independent of time.✌
