It's performances like this that make Frida my favourite vocalist of the group, her mezzo-soprano has a warmth that Agnetha just doesn't have. Together they're dynamite.
Just another perfect pop ballad, musical story telling at its best. Sonically a song written 45 or 50 years ago that sounds like it could have been written last week. Such a beautiful song that solidified ABBA as a force to be reckoned with - they were NOT going away! Thanks Matt for your comments, can’t wait for your reactions to the Arrival album next. 👍
Great reaction Matt, as always though a bit disappointed you were so distracted by the cat especially at the beginning...not paying full attention to Frida's magical vocal, her first words "Can you hear the drums, Fernando?" still so beautiful & heart-stopping after all these years But you were jumpin' up 'n' down just to pick up the cat, over & over again Aw! But still my friend, you're always sensitive & open-hearted, even when so distracted x *sorry to be snappy.....me, i hate cats myself but sure, many people are crazy about 'em such as yourself, sir (no, i don't geddit at all) "Cooking Fat" is my favourite nickname for such an annoying dratted high-maintenance moggy (switch round the first letter of each word) x
That was another massive hit.Imagine it was even no1 in Australia for 14 whole weeks and held the record until 2017 that Ed Sheeran beat them with "Shape of you'.Of course Abba's sales had a different value cause it drove all people out of their houses straight to the record shops buying the vinyl,so no 'faceless' streaming and doubtfuly calculating countings and such stuff.Just Real copies sold.
""Fernando" was such a hit in Australia that the song was adapted and performed by ABBA for use in a series of commercials promoting the brand National (Panasonic) in Australia. 🤟 When "Fernando" was #1 ABBA had the number #1, #3, #5, and #20 album in Australia (all the ABBA records at that point) with Queen's album "A Night At The Opera" at #2 and the Eagle's "Greatest Hits" at #4. ✌
Actually this is their biggest selling single.I even ignored that until years back that i noticed "Fernando' sold more copies than "Dancing Queen' (which is more popular now!) 6 million copies at first and over 10 million sold ,till today for "Fernando'.
@@pascal-Z well btw i'm especially grateful to Germany cause the German press was very supportive and protective to my fave band from start till the 'end' as opposed to the USA/UK press that was mainly critical and toxic to the Swedes back then.I (like many others) used to buy German music papers because of plenty of Abba material that was published in there, not even knowing the language, though i tried to learn it.Danke schon.
The Arrival album is one of those definitive ABBA albums - some even say a definitive pop album in pop history. It’ll be fun to see your reaction to that.
Hello again, dear friend Happy to see you following the chronological order of ABBA músic Now Is the time of the single Fernando between studio albums ABBA & Arrival (in fact there's another album, ABBA Greatest Hits, between studio albums ABBA & Arrival) Fernando" (1976) is slowly, and beautiful The best is the beauty of their vocal harmonies, with great solo intro by the brunette singer Frida, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection, with Agnetha join in the test of the song and gives a fantástic harmonies, with exploted in a powerful chorus ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía" It was their manager who convinced Them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style (the brunette singer Frida had done it the year before on her solo album in Swedish, with other lyrics, and it was a big success) The manager was right and everything was a great success, one after another in 1976, that gives ABBA three #1 consecutives in UK: Mamma Mía (2 weeks) Fernando (4 weeks) Dancing Queen (6 weeks) "Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks #1 surpassed the BEATLES with "Hey Jude") and #1 in U.S. Adult Contemporary too "Fernando" is (in a tie with Chiquitita, from 1979) the ABBA second greatest worldwide (only behind Dancing Queen) and sell more than 10 millions singles all over the world And in 1980, after the worldwide succes of the single Chiquitita at latín countries in 1979, Fernando was one of the songs recorded in spanish to the full album 'Gracias por la música" (ABBA singing in spanish languuage) the official video of Fernando was filmed in two days , at the same time with the official video of Dancing Queen, in February 1976 A cordial greeting with affection from Buenos Aires Argentina South América
Originally recorded for Frida's 1975 solo album "Frida Ensam", then re-recorded (with different lyrics) in 1976 for inclusion on their Greatest Hits album. It describes two guys reminiscing on their time as freedom fighters in the Mexican Civil War. It's one of their most popular songs and became their third UK number one. It's not a showy track - I think it's appeal is in the melody, it's something easy to sing along too. The military drums, the flute(?) - it all creates an atmosphere of sitting around a fire, the stars in the sky, being nostalgic for days past.
This song, followed by Dancing Queen, propelled them into super-stardom. With more than 10 million copies sold it still is one of the most successful singles of all time. The music video is gorgeous as well. That said, it's never been one of my personal favorites, I've always found the chorus a bit too mellow.
There was a big disagreement between Stig ABBA’s manager who wanted this to be the next single where as Björn and Benny wanted Dancing Queen. It sold over 10 million copies worldwide and was included as an additional track in some territories to the groups 1976 Greatest Hits album and in some territories it was an additional track on the Arrival Album. Looking forward to your Arrival review, this is where ABBA truely Arrived and never looked back
Oh, my goodness! I can hardly wait until you start your "Arrival" reactions. Shout out to Adam who started you on your ABBA journey! Did he provide you with all of their albums through "Voyage"? (A total of nine original albums).

Recorded on the same day as Dancing Queen back in August 1975 and was originally a Swedish language solo song for Frida. Using the same backing track, it was later re-recorded by ABBA with different lyrics.

Big hit together with Chiquitita Spanish versions in Latin America
Frida did fernando first on her solo album " ensam " ( alone ) . Or was it .".eleven women in one house ". ?. Another frida solo. ⭐
"Eleven woman in one house... "
is Agnetha solo album un swedish (1975), included "S.O S." and "Disilussion" in her swedish version
Matt, can you start to hear Erasure's influence in their songwriting and arrangements a little? You will hear more and more Erasure inspiration starting from this moment on.
The way you phrased that makes things sound a little weird.
Because "Fernando" is from 1976 and Erasure was formed in 1985.
@@lu_godoy but you forget ABBA ESQUE EP of Erasure from 1991?
@@lu_godoy I am saying ABBA inspired Erasure.
But the way you worded it made it sound like Erasure were apparently the influence on ABBA
