Toyota is selling a brand new truck called a Champ for $10,000 USD in emerging countries that meat all of the safety requirements of the US government. The chicken tax and the EPA are restricting these trucks from entering the US market. The chicken tax is a 25% tax. The EPA will not allow an affordable vehicle to enter the US market because it will destroy the prices of other vehicles and everyone will want this new Toyota Champ.
I bought my 2017 Mazda 3 new. It has been paid off for 3 years now and has 120K miles on it and it runs like new. Ill probably put another 120K on it as long as prices are even close to current levels. Not having a car payment is wonderful .
When trucks went to 20k, I thought no one would pay that, however, they did and now they are 100k plus. Why would anyone pay over 15k for a truck? Now they have 14k trucks on sale for 100k.
makes you wonder if the manufacturers are trying to eliminate the dealers. make car sales factory direct to consumer. that way they keep all the money from sales

ok here i the deal. in the US the vehicles on dealer lots WERE ALL ORDERED by a dealer (or the one that the dealer bought it from). OEMs have little influence on what dealers order. as that how the laws in states (and some Federal) laws mandate.
The last new truck I bought is a 2016 F550 XL. Had it equipped as a service truck. The total cost for this fully equipped truck was $108,000. This same truck today is $206,000.
When I lived in Germany in the 80s .. Taurus was popular .. but the Sierra , a cut down version was even more popular . They need a new VW Bug type of car ... but I think that won't happen.
In Australia, we have used MG ZS EVs 2020 with less than 50,000 km selling for around A$25,000. MG are selling new MG4s for A$31,000, a discount of A$10,000. One thing in your favour is that in eight years time the EVs will still be running smoothly and good buying. All gasoline vehicles may be hard to sell soon as peak cheap oil approaches or if the Gulf of Hormuz is closed. If a company made civic/accord/corolla/camry sized vehicle, dependable with AC and a Bluetooth radio at the 18k price point, they'd sell a million of them. Let the aftermarket pick up the rest. I never understood how companies thought that selling less more expensive goods was better than selling more less expensive products. Or, take what they're producing now, dummy it down and drop the prices. We need less computerized, complicated vehicles.
Some of these international companies make cheaper cars that they sell in foreign markets. It would probably be cheaper and faster to modify one of those for the US market.
I have a $200K house. I cannot justify anything greater than 25K for a vehicle that ultimately is a depreciating asset... I just need a reliable, safe ride to work.. I will gladly just go to a car lot like Brandon's any time my car breaks down and buy a cash car. Save my would-be car payment and buy another car when that car breaks down. I probably will save money... but if not, that's fine, I am done with overpriced cars.

The Ford Maverick has been out for 4 or 5 years now. You would think that by now some other brand would have come out with something similar that people can afford. Granted, once dealer got a hold of the Maverick they jacked the price up but even then it was still less then half the price of most other trucks out there. If someone came out with a good cheap car or truck some people might even buy it new instead of spending $15,000 on something used. Just make it where dealers can't jack up the price.

You always say these brands will go out of business, but they won't. Most people don't know much about cars. As long as these companies keep changing the designs and make them look good, people will go buy them. There is always a NEED for people to go buy a car of their own because it symbolizes wealth and status. They don't care whats on the inside as long as the car runs. If there is a warranty, the dealer will fix it. And businesses will always buy cars from these brands because it's a tax write off for them. So yeah, these car brands will never go out of business.

Some of the Japanese car makers are doing things customers don't want. Like installing CVT transmissions that they buy from other companies. But in general they aren't as overpriced and filled with overly complex and failure prone systems as American made cars are. Modern cars are filled with systems that eventually fail and are expensive to replace. Like HVAC controls and actuators that fail. They should offer cable controlled slides and dials to control the airflow that almost never fails. Get rid of $7K tail lights that aren't even available that fog up and fail. The list is long.

Automakers making over complicated and high repair vehicles. CEOs making millions per year. Government bailed them out years ago. Sad to see the working class people getting laid off for bad management. We need to do something about the management.
We all know that its going to end badly, we just don't know when. The manufacturing landscape will highly likely shrink, CDJR will likely be chopped in half. Ford and GM will likely drop by a third.
