- I'm pruning back the summer growth on my bonsai trees before they come inside the plant room for the winter!
In this video I prune my Guava bonsai, my Money tree and my Kapok Rain Forest.
The trees in this video are the common Guava (Psidium guajava), the Money Tree (Pachira aquatica) also known as the Malabar chestnut, French peanut, Guiana chestnut, Provision tree, Saba nut, Monguba and the Pumpo and the Kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra)

A crispy, cool fall day, with the blue jays chattering and for the best part, no emergency vehicles sirens a blasting. Ah a good day in the Bonsai Zone.
Yes, it was one of those peaceful quiet days, me and the birds. I'll miss those days in winter!

I like the leaves on the Guava tree. They are thick looking.

I'll be sure to do that, the plant room roof will be done tomorrow and then I have some insulating and vapor barrier work to do. I have a heater in the greenhouse, we haven't had frost yet, but it is a possibility again tonight. Busy times ahead!

I really like the Guava tree, I'll have to try and grow one someday. Looks like it's going down to 0°c tonight
I went out and bought a guava after watching his video about growing guavas from seed! I had a lovely snack, and left a ton of seeds in wet paper towel. Almost two years later, I have five little saplings, recently repotted - and pretty healthy :)
They aren't kidding when they say that guavas are extremely slow to grow. Two years and the tallest one is only about up to my knee. They're very thin, but woody and surprisingly sturdy. They're kind of funny to look at.
Just last week I noticed that a few have finally begun to rammify -- I'm super excited to see where they go next :)

have you started filming with a different fps ?
This was ALL-I at 30 FPS. I used the Canon 35 mm RF lens with a variable density filter. I set the lens at F 1.8.

Your clear explanations of why you cut gives me the courage to try basic shaping of my little Yew and Ash. Though, not sure if this is the right time of year. Should I wait until late winter/spring?
I would do the structural pruning late fall or early winter. This will give the wounds time to dry up before the sap flows in spring. As the new shoots grow in in spring, you can pinch or remove buds that you don't want, to further refine the shape.

I just want to thank you real quick for sharing your knowledge. I'm just getting into bonsai (I started three apple seedlings, and I'm hoping to prune them in a year or two when they're more vigorous), so watching you prune is very satisfying and makes me a little less scared of the pruning I'll eventually have to do. You definitely scare me sometimes (OMG why are you taking all the leaves off?!... Oh, it's gonna be ok? Oh, ok.) but when you explain what you do it makes me more confident I can take care of my little trees and make them happy.
BTW, have you tried splicing two together, so it looks like two saplings that grew too close? That's my plan with two of my three apples. By my understanding, what you do is cut off the bark on the places that will grow together, then bind them with flower tape. Got any tips or tricks?

Hi Mr Saunders, when will you give us an update of your citrus bonsai?
Hmm, my money tree only has leaves at the very top of the stems. Is that because I have too many stems in one pot or could it be because of light conditions? Not enough water?
If the money tree is kept outdoors in the summer and watered and fed well, it should grow very tall with lots of leaves before fall. I would switch to a bonsai soil, this will allow you to water and fertilize more often without much fear of root rot.
Nigel are you able to throw away your cuttings? Sometimes I can but seem to have yo try rooting one at least.
It is very hard, I have a lot of them sitting in my frog pond at the moment. Bonsai J took a few, but the rest may never get planted.

In my experience, Guava tree grows very slowly... in ficus I can see the changes in everyweek, but in the case of guava it looks same. I always think even if it is live or not...

They can grow faster than a Ficus if provided ideal conditions.

For the Guava, what are the reasons for not leaving the lower branch as a sacrificial branch?
I'm hoping to develop a scar free trunk to show off the bark. The tree has a lot of growing to do!

Why do you lower your FPS?
Is the roof of the plant room repaired at this point? Hopefully so!
It should be fixed on the outside tomorrow, I still have to waterproof, insulate and put up the vapor barrier on the inside, then finally I can move the all the trees inside. I'm running a heater in the greenhouse at night. We haven't had frost yet, but it may come tonight.

It all depends on your climate area too 😊
If it helps... it seems Ficus and Schefflera are good in inexperienced hands. Check out Nigel's playlists featuring those trees.

Try boxwood usually easily found and very forgiving I'm from Canada too like Nigel they can as outdoor or indoor plants

0:14 whats the point of haveing so many trees ?
It's nice to have a lot of trees because many of them only need to be worked on twice a year while they are developing. This allows me to always have a tree that I can work on while the others are growing.
