I was 18 when it came out. I was immediately impressed. I was discussing it with a Coworker who was 34 at the time. I told him how much I liked Simple Minds. He sneered that his 7 year old daughter liked them!
Whenever this song comes on, immediate image of the Breakfast Club, Judd Nelson and the corn chip sandwich girl. Appreciate the music from Simple Minds.
I grew up listening to Simple Minds (which was my favourite band) and other 80's bands. My school friends used to criticise me for liking 'old' music, then I will answer back saying that people still like the 'Beatles', which is an even older band.
That song is what the 80’s sounded like…that song takes me back to 1985 when I was 15…there’s no other song that takes me back to a specific moment…amazing
I still remember going on my lunch break and my co-worker said "Hey, You gotta check this out". He had Simple Minds on cassette and he played " Don't you forget about me ". His new car had 12 speakers in it and when he played that song with 300 Watts of power, it blew my mind. But when that drum fill hit, that was AMAZING. That was back when your system didn't " Thump" or vibrate everything within a block. It just enveloped you with Crystal Clear sound.
In 1985 I think it was, I saw Simple Minds at Wembley Stadium. I was 11 and my Dads friend who worked for Rondor Music managed to talk him in to letting me go with him and his son. I had never seen so many people in one place like that being a wee Kiwi lad. It was amazing.
I read somewhere that they wanted Billy Idol to do this song originally. I cannhear it in my head, but no way it would have beat what we got. The song and the movie just synergies so well
I, for one, as an 18-year-old pop music fan, was just happy to see Simple Minds on MTV -- I had only been introduced to them two years before when they appeared on "American Bandstand. It might have been a generic pop song, but the band and Jim gave it the Simple Minds treatment, and I"m curious what Jim's written outro was, but, to me, the "La la la la". is iconic in its own right.
This is the song sent to me on an audio cassette in the mail by a girl who was 17 at the time, who lived more than 500 km from me and to whom I had never spoken. About 5 years later, I married her. She looked like a twin sister to actress Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games saga: the same face, the same hair, the same body, the same strong character, the same way of speaking and the same determination as Katniss Everdeen.
It worked then and there and I never listened to the Simple Minds again. 1984, the end of 3 fascinating decades for rock and the start of a never ending la la la era
When I saw Breakfast club and this song came on at the beginning of the movie everyone went crazy even the manager came out his office saying what is that and it’s just everyone loves the movie and simple minds that day was Amazing.
It sure does. It is my belief that we grew in the best of times, the greatest music. Cheers live long and cellibrate what we had and the memories we have
I didn't know that Jim did the la la la la. And was at a concert years ago. Where they were singing don't you forget about me. And Jim said during the concert. The easiest lyrics I've ever written. And I commented on their Facebook page about it. Thinking it was written by someone else. And I don't know if it was Jim himself but he put me straight about it 😂😂
Those that say this is the best song are knowwhere near the best. What about I travel 12", Love song, Glittering Prize, Waterfront, warbabiess, alive and kicking, belfast child, promised you a miracle. All of their own stuff is leagues ahead of this...
Average haha nope It’s the best song on the planet! I loved it before breakfast club! Ever the perfectionist Jim 🥰 Love it , that’s why all the songs are awesome…. 🙌La La la La La La La La perfect
Not their song. He explains it all on the Rockenteur Podcast. "The songwriter, Forsey, offered "Don't You (Forget About Me)" to Bryan Ferry, who declined as he was working on his 1985 album Boys and Girls. Ferry said later: "It was just bad timing ... Keith Forsey sent me a demo of the song and it sounded like a hit to me."[13] The record label, A&M, suggested Corey Hart, who had a hit at the time with "Sunglasses at Night", but Forsey did not think he was the right singer. Billy Idol also declined".
After the success log this track. He thought he was gonna be the next Jim Morrison or something. Went all in trying to be a rock star. Only to never gain the success level of that song ever again. But it also cost him his girlfriend at the time. Chrissy Hynde, singer and pretty much just a cool badass chick from the pretenders!
This defined the mid-80s, epic soundtrack of the time.
This was my high school graduation song, ~300 students singing this...we nailed it.....1994
Epic? I think you need a dictionary.
Every time this songs comes up volume goes to 100. Well done Sir!!
The drums on this tune are just awesome. I'm a metal enthusiast and heard many great drum tracks, but this takes the trophy imo
Great drummer!
Jim Kerr’s voice is breathtaking!! Greeting from Brazil!!!!❤️👏👏👏👏👏

I was 18 when it came out. I was immediately impressed. I was discussing it with a Coworker who was 34 at the time. I told him how much I liked Simple Minds. He sneered that his 7 year old daughter liked them!
yo también, no lloren, dejen que suene hasta el final
I certainly hope your funeral is far, far in the distant future…. I wish you a long life!
We have material things for a short time, but memories are lasting.
Music is vibration and energy; it is eternal like our souls. Our temporary lives/bodies will come and go.
It's one of the best songs ever in my opinion ❤
Agree
Yes it is too why not.
💪❤️😎
Couldn't agree more.
Sorry its awful.. as a semi pro guitarist, it lacks any musical skill just hype!
Seen Simple Minds twice they will always be my favourite band so thank you for your brilliant songs 🤙

I grew up listening to Simple Minds (which was my favourite band) and other 80's bands. My school friends used to criticise me for liking 'old' music, then I will answer back saying that people still like the 'Beatles', which is an even older band.
I'm primarily a hard rock and metal fan, but this song is so damn good.
That song is what the 80’s sounded like…that song takes me back to 1985 when I was 15…there’s no other song that takes me back to a specific moment…amazing
Great song!
Loved this song since it came out ❤
Great pop tune!😊
Very nice modest man
Amazing hit ! Thanks you !

Saw them in Rome last weekend. Superb night.
Amazing🏴🙌
I remember seeing them along with Texas and a couple of other bands back in the early 90s at Wembley, brilliant time.
I love love love this song! Thank you for the lalalala!!!!
The drum fill in the middle 😎
Love Simple Minds. Brilliant band.
In 1985 I think it was, I saw Simple Minds at Wembley Stadium. I was 11 and my Dads friend who worked for Rondor Music managed to talk him in to letting me go with him and his son.
I had never seen so many people in one place like that being a wee Kiwi lad.

That’s a great story. All-time classic song. Still listen to it today.
The best Song...vor me...❤❤
I read somewhere that they wanted Billy Idol to do this song originally. I cannhear it in my head, but no way it would have beat what we got. The song and the movie just synergies so well
The best Simpleminds song ever. One of my all time favorite songs and the soundtrack to one of my go to films.
Breakfast club indeed
They just recorded it, they didn’t write it, so it would be a shame if that were true.
@@unkindestcutCorrect. Producer Keith Forsey did.
Simple minds forever!
love them
Every decade has a few landmark songs. This is one from the 80's
Legend of a song from a Legendary group
One if the greatest and most beautiful, powerful songs ever written. LONG LIVE SIMPLE MINDS!!! ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS IF ALL TIME!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️✊✊✊😎😎😎
Was not written by Simple Minds.

Una extraordinaria rola de los 80s es un gran clásico ❤
crushed it
They were a very established group who wrote their own songs. Tons of albums behind them.
Never thought of applying my la la la la rule to this tune !?
Big Jim, see you in Albi France on 7th of july 2024! Just can't wait you've been my fave band for 40 years! SM Still rocks;-)
Yea and it’s one of my favorites 💕💕💕😁

Love this song❤

Charlie's guitar in the intro just sends me! It was so special back then, and it continues on today!
Love this song !! ❤
Lo and behold; it did work.
Classic.
Excellent song, top song of all time
The best Pop Song of the '80s ..❤🇦🇷
My favorite song in the 80's ❤❤❤
What would we do in your concerts, Jim, without lalalala?❤
Fave song from that decade .
It sure does. It is my belief that we grew in the best of times, the greatest music. Cheers live long and cellibrate what we had and the memories we have

This was originally pitched to Billy Idol, who passed on it. Billy Idol never had a No.1, but if he had recorded this he would have.
Was so into this band as a teenager years before they reached the charts.
Went really commercial after empires and dance imo.
I heard they orginally wanted Billy Idol to fo the song.I love Billy Idol, but Simple Minds did an excellent job on this song.
Iconic Simple Minds track. But written by Keith Forsyth. Derek Forbes nearly did the vocal because Jim didn’t fancy it at all.
The 'la la la' is the best part..
great song , sung it to a girlfreind when i left the philippines last month , shes young never heard it b4 , she cryed
Simple Minds ... best Music ever ...
What? You can't be serious 😂
It worked really well.
❤❤❤👏
Top
Written by the legendary Keith Forsey.. genius 🤷
Legendary trap, legendary band really
Those that say this is the best song are knowwhere near the best. What about I travel 12", Love song, Glittering Prize, Waterfront, warbabiess, alive and kicking, belfast child, promised you a miracle. All of their own stuff is leagues ahead of this...
Absolute legend
La la la won over the existential lyrics lol
Great song! I watched them perform that on Live Aid. All young guys. Jim looks a codger. That means I'm a codger.
Average haha nope
It’s the best song on the planet!
I loved it before breakfast club!
Ever the perfectionist Jim 🥰
Love it , that’s why all the songs are awesome…. 🙌La La la La La La La La perfect
The American 12 inch and i travel were their best.
When I realized it was HIM!!!😮
Drums made that track what it is.
You had the shite of Stock Aitken and Waterman in the 80s. And then there was Simple Minds. Thank goodness.
Not their song. He explains it all on the Rockenteur Podcast.

La La La La is profound
I always dug Mandela Day
Jim tells the story on how Don’t You (Forget And, here it is, in my opinion, one of the absolute BEST songs ever recorded!!!💖
