Golf R's and S3's 10 to a penny where I'm from... The A35 is new, has a fresh interior and just a different feel to usual VAG stuff. Good to have options.
Mercedes is still learning the hothatch thing. VW is much further with the Golf. The chassis is also a lot better then the merc, especially on track. My mate has a A35 and i have a GTI clubsport and he cannot follow me in the corners.
Golf R, Audi S3, Merc A35 and now BMW M135i all 2 litre turbo four cylinder four wheel drive....all copies off each other. The sector is so full of the same things now it's become dull

I do like the A35, tech is very impressive but is a bit of an ipad on wheels (albeit a very nice one). My main issue with the A35 is it feels less of an all rounder - ride is bit too firm, too much road harshness in the cabin and handling / steering feels a bit muted compared to the Golf R which to me is noticeably sharper when pushing on it. Also there is a distinct lack of low end torque compare to the R - you have to rev it quite a bit more to get it in the power band. Still a good car and again the tech is far superior to the R.
A35 probably has less torque so the A45 can fill the gap whereas the R has no car above so VW probably made it faster than they may have done otherwise.
A35 2019 Model im sure comes with PPF filter which ruins the "pops & bangs" and the overall sound of the car unfortunately. P.S. Still waiting on the Cupra Head to Head!
The 2019 Cupra which comes with the GPF still has all the pops and bangs. Throatier exhaust note too. The upshift farts are muted in comparison to the previous 300 & 290
@@ryanbarson9499 Yes I heard a 2019 R recently. It sounded pretty good. Louder than my 2019 Cupra. Wasn't as loud as the 2018 R I was using recently but that had 6k on the clock.

Great video Luke! Your head 2 head hot hatch videos are your killer series on this channel! Even with a mediocre launch, the A35 AMG still won the battle! I actually got a 4.4 using draggy with mine so i guess the real score should be 4-2 (even 0-60 times for both). That res delete gave you a cheeky advantage in the sound clips ;) Its really 5-0 to the A35 lol. Just need a skilled driver behind the wheel
Good points. The A35 had also only done 1140 miles on the clock with NO launch experience, give it 6-8months (as per the golf) and i think the launch would have been a different result. Not sure about the skilled driver comment though!

People call them hyper-hatches, as opposed to the hot-hatches which have around 300bhp. With the new shape A Class, Mercedes announced they'd be bringing out the A35, A45 and A45S. The A45 and A45S are being revealed towards the end of the year. The A35 uses the 2.0l engine from the A250, just slightly tuned up. Basically the A35 is just to compete with the Golf R, S3 etc.

Pretty minor credentials to judge these cars on (especially awarding a point for fractions of a second difference to 60). Surely how they are to drive is what counts but you don't go into that, what gives??
What many of us who buy a Golf R like. I personally don't want a garish colour, big spolier or a loud exhaust. Mine has to double as a family hatch not an 18 year olds boy racer dream.
I would disagree, the non aero is more elegant and less "boy racer" imo. It's also less likely to be pulled over by the cops as it doesn't stand out as much. But each to their own!

After all, the Mercedes A-Class is a Renault Megane underneath. I get 4.2 on my 7.5R EU spec, 310ps. It does that over and over again. Slowest i got was 4.3s and i've done at least 10 launches stock. Thats with just me in the car. Now i've got a JB4, i get 3.7s on a custom map 6. My fastest is 3.64s along with a 1/4mile of 11.9s (complete flat road) Again all this is full weight, with just me driving (14.5 stone / 200 pounds / 92KG). All measured with a Dragy. Point is an EU spec R with good fuel will do sub 4.5 seconds all day long.

I work for MSL PERFORMANCE. We ran the new A35 AMG on the Dyno and the car made APROX 330 BHP STOCK and once we mapped it madeAPROX 360 BHP

Dale Steel a lot of relevance, a resonator delete adds to the sound of the exhaust and also adds 10-15bbp.

I’m not a Golf fan personally but the Golf sounds a lot better than the A35. The A35 is painful to listen too, it’s just engine screams.
