Just bought the same saw used to cut slab rocks for lapidary, great run down of the machine and basics of cutting, kudos sir

So this is not cheating, and in fact flake over grind was done by hand thousands of years ago, in predynastic Egypt. Greg Nunn demonstrated how some Danish daggers were done with flake over grind. The environmental advantages are clear, make the most of the resources, great video.

I use the same saw, works great. One tip I was given was to put the pump in a fresh water source to eliminate the possibility of clogging!

If you can produce a nice piece that turns out beautiful it's not cheating,it is just simply beautiful.

What blade are you using from harbor freight? I've tried several using water to cut hartville and the saw wont do it.....

Wow, cool quick video. Couple questions for you or anyone who might know more. First that last piece was large, did you cut it in one pass or did you have to flip it over to finish the cut? I ask, because Im looking to get my first saw to cut rocks and crystals and I want a saw that can do small to as large as possible, like your last size or slightly larger. Next, your saw is 2.5 horse, thats big compared to some that are under 1 hp and yet you said you can slow the saw down and burn it out. That tells me I dont want too much smaller then a 1 to 1.5 horse. Hard to tell, but your saw seems quiet compared to some videos, was it just your sound lowered or is it pretty quiet? How much more height does a 10" give you over the 7", looks like maybe another 2 inches or so? How long you have your saw so far, has it lasted a few years or more and do you like it overall and recommend it? Lastly, when doing Obsidian (I have a ton of it and large too out here in Cali.) does it ever splinter like glass or give off any particle glass while cutting? Thanks a lot for nay info I can use to make a saw purchase, greatly appreciated, Chris

I'd like to see someone use these pieces in an epoxy resin floor.

How good of a point is the petrified wood, and does it work just like flint?

    • @gregpryorhomestead
      @gregpryorhomestead  6 лет назад +2

Larry Grubbs it's brittle and makes steps easily but with practice it's pretty nice. Especially considering it's wood! It's better than rhyolite, tile, or toilet porcelain but not as good as flint or obsidian.

By George I got to try this napping thing before I die. Need to take a class on it some where some how.

The only people who say it's cheating are the guys who have access to unlimited supplies of stuff they can nap. I happen to live in a place where the closest stone is 4.5 hours by car and all the stuff online today is either junk or way to expensive to not slab and get as much as possible yeah I wish I lived in an area where I could just go for a short drive and load up my truck for nothing and do it the way man has for thousands of years unfortunately we can't all do that these days

I am traditional Mexica, and I think cheating is not aplicable.
If you have the best means, by all means do it. I do draw the line on some stuff, it depends.

I prefer working with slabs it is cheating in a way but not everybody has the luxury of going out and rock hound if your near where you could get any knapping material and plus the time to go out and get it as well. But different ppl have there own minds and thoughts about knapping.

I think that use slabs it's a cheat, if i don't talk English correctly is because i am Spanish and i have 15 years old, also i think that when you use slabs the flintknapping lose his essence

As for me, I'm going to send the poor fellow some obsidian from California pronto Amigo ;)

@@RobertKaucher My bet is Honorable Ishi would have enjoyed using an electric tile saw if he had one. May have also got a kick out of a Winchester. Ooops that didn't sound right.
I love to knap and I put Ishi on my first tool I made that was revealed to us, on its use by Mr. Ishi.

I tell you what Spaniard when you give me thousands of dollars so I can buy truck loads of whole rock to nap then I won't cheat. But until then sit down and shut up and let us get the most out of the rock we can afford.

spall, don't saw. unless it's ultra rare material. flake over grinding means you need to buy a real blade from a real knapper because it's cheating and the result is a huge ugly cookie cutter blade.
