Dave, the information that you convey in your videos holds no bounds! Its so refreshing to have a non- egotistical, non-sponsored, unbiased youtube channel, I do hope that it continues this way. It turned out not to be the seamless experience expected. Still an app to open to select the pump and start the charge. Hopefully the next time you use a fastned this wont be necessary? Maybe you will do a follow-up video on the fastned experience?
Thanks for your lovely feedback. In hindsight, we should have completed a full autocharge session - rather than just the setup process - for this video. We're planning to release a follow-up video when we can get back to the site.
Dave - thanks for this, I enabled Autocharge, went round to my local Fastned EVSE, completed the process and charging started. Then I stopped, unplugged and re-plugged, it started automatically, this is a great addition to the Fastned service. I paid £0.69/init. Once again thank you for bring attention to this facility.
I think if the video had started showing you turning up to the Fastned charger, plugged in and walked away, while the charge happened all by itself, would have made a more impressive intro. Although we know the feature works and it’s useful to see how it is setup nowadays, as when I did it a year ago it there was nothing confusing about it because I first told the app that at my next charging session I wanted the auto charge to be activated, I then followed the charger’s own screen instructions rather then the app to start a new charging session and if I remember correctly auto charge was then set up from that moment. They might therefore have change the process every so slightly now.
Great video Dave. I had problems setting up the auto charge at St Albans. It refused to initiate until I had tick boxed a deep down setting in the Fastned app that related to emissions. Why would you need to accept this when you are obviously using an electric car? Very strange, but other than that auto charge finally got setup and I tested it straight away with no problem.
Would have been good to see you test the autocharge! I’ve just downloaded the app and done the initial setup. Will keep on eye out for fastned on our road trips as they aren’t too unreasonably priced.
So it wasn't just me then ! Dave you owe it to us all to do a short video where you turn up plug in and it works. As it is the overriding impression of this video is that this simple feature is very complicated.
Plug and charge and auto charge are different protocols tho. They do the same but in different ways. Some cars support auto charge some support plug and charge.
Maybe could've moved to a different charger to test it fully (plug in and walk away)? It does seem a bit of a faff, when once you have an Electroverse account you just plug in, flash the card and walk away!
Note for non-UK viewers, UK Teslas now have CCS and (I think) throughout the EU. US Teslas still have the NAC socket (Tesla proprietary as was). Don't know what the situation is in other areas.
Useful video. The data held about identifying your car etc will probably be held at a central computer site and not on the charger or app (although you'll update it via the app).

Great videos thanks - Used this exact charger two weeks ago and got a £100 fine for my trouble! No help from Fastned - seems like a big bait and switch scam - be very careful!
Dave it would have been better at the end of the video to test again and see if you could just plug in and start charging without the app. Confirming that what you expect actually does work. I would love to see you use this charging network again to see if it really does work as expected. Mike
I live in Sunderland and we are fortunate enough to have 2 Fastneds. One is in the town centre and the other one is Washington(which is only a couple of miles from the Nissan factory). I have used the Washington charger to complete the Autocharge set up. As Dave said they are great chargers if a little expensive compared to Tesla.
I like the idea of auto charge but it is about having choices, you don’t have to use it. I have the Fastned app set up on my phone but I don’t think it will work with my current EV, an older Hyundai Ioniq 38. I don’t think all EV’s can use auto yet. However, my lease ends this summer and the option to auto charge on a new car is a feature I will want on a new EV. I am hoping that other charging companies, like Gridserve and Osprey, will follow suit. Thank you for your mistake about plugging in first, will learn from that in the future.
Hey there. Not sure it was mentioned in the video, what was the max charging speed in kW at this charging point? Btw was it 300kW Alpitronic and how big is your Tesla's battery? Thanks a lot!
A suggestion for you to make to providers... Sorry Dave, I appreciate the work you put in on this but it was inaccurate and muddled. I have been using autocharge without problem since August 2022. So I expect you could have used it last summer. Perhaps you just used contactless on your previous visit. Autocharge has worked at all their chargers I’ve used in the EU and the UK since then ie 19 times. With a shared charger they need to pair you, your credit card and your car or someone else could connect. Also you can end the charge and release the connector on the charger screen in two presses. It is sometime ago that I set up Autocharge but I think I set this up while doing an app initiated charge and it was just a matter of ticking a box in the app. Please put things right by revisiting a Fastned charger asap. I also find the app good. You can view your charging live even when you did not use the app when plugging in. PS please tell us about the facilities in more detail when reviewing chargers. Fastned impressed me by putting in a loo after I and I assume others complained about lack of a toilet in Boppard. Being able to give them feedback about a charger while charging is great. PPS what happened to the promised screen shots?

I remain unconvinced. Just pay by contactless. All this faffing and loading your phone with apps is a load of old BS. It's just a data harvesting front. The ev charging industry is data hungry and needs really strong regulation. Back in the day when I used to buy petrol I simply paid at kiosk or counter, end of. Given the extremely high cost of public charging there should be no need for data harvesting. Thinking about this I can cover my charging needs away from home here in the UK with 3 charge cards: electroverse, VW's card and a ChargePlace Scotland card. No pre auth fees and a small card wallet to carry. Still 3 too many imo.
Like you I go for contactless normally. In the past five years, over 90k miles I have only used my Credit card, a ChargePlaceScotland card or a podpoint app.
But it still means that you need a different app for every charging network. What I want is for this auto charging to work across all networks with a single app.
Would have been a good video, if only you showed us the screenshots that you kept telling us you were taking, and if you then made an autocharge to show how easy it was working after the setup. Andrew Till's (Mr EV) video about a year ago was much more informative of this

Totally appreciate the videos (and the honesty of the failed process) but it does highlight one of the few valid points that the EV hater community have; EV charging can be a phaff.

Tap and go would be a lot quicker. Don't like the idea that your financial data is held on the charger, at some point it will be scammed and you will be paying for someone elses charge.
That doesn't sound like an "auto" charge to me. To me, a real auto charge is plug my car in and do nothing at all. No opening app, no swiping a card. Just plug in and charge.
So do you just open the app and plug in or do you have to select anything on the app like the charger number? Is it as Dave expects just open app to get it speaking to the charger then plug in?

I have used Fastned a lot in Newcastle area not quite as slick as Tesla but very close , I stopped using them when they put the price up, they also don’t seem to have the idle fees, I regularly used to see the same cars on the chargers all day ( b**tards)

If you make hydrogen from gas, then it is just as dirty as burning oil. If you make it by electrolysis of water, then you use 3 times the electricity compared to just charging a battery. So for the uk's 38,000,000 road vehicals that would be 240twh a year against 80twh a year for just charging the 38 million batteries directly. There is a reason why there are only 6 public hydrogen filling stations and about 500 hydrogen vehicals in the UK.

The information exchanged between your car and a CCS charger follows a specific protocol called the SAE J1722. Here's a breakdown of what gets communicated:
Car to Charger:
Battery information: This includes current state of charge (SOC), battery health, and capacity. This helps the charger determine the appropriate power level and charging profile for your battery.
Maximum current: The car specifies its maximum allowable current for charging, ensuring safe operation within its limits.
Thermal regulation: The car might communicate its cooling system capabilities to the charger. This allows the charger to adjust charging power based on battery temperature, optimizing charging speed without overheating the battery.
Safety status: The car can signal any fault conditions or safety concerns that might prevent charging.
Charger to Car:
Available power: The charger informs the car of its maximum available power output.
Voltage and current: The charger confirms the specific voltage and current levels it will provide for charging.
Charging profile: The charger might offer different charging profiles based on factors like battery type and desired charging speed. The car can negotiate the most suitable profile.
VIN identification:
While the CCS protocol allows for transmitting a unique vehicle identifier, it doesn't necessitate including the entire VIN. The charger might use a different identifier assigned by the car manufacturer for communication purposes.
In essence, the data exchange ensures safe and efficient charging by enabling the car and charger to work together optimally. The network might not directly identify your car using the VIN, but it likely has a unique identifier associated with your car for billing or network management purposes.

Cheers guys
Good info Dave thank you. Will look out for Fastned chargers in future especially as the price is competitive 😁
But it still means that you need a different app for every charging network.
What I want is for this auto charging to work across all networks with a single app.
Never going to happen. But the point is that once you set it up,YOU DONT NEED THE APP.
Would have been a good video, if only you showed us the screenshots that you kept telling us you were taking, and if you then made an autocharge to show how easy it was working after the setup.
Andrew Till's (Mr EV) video about a year ago was much more informative of this
Thanks for pointing that out. Sorry they were missed. We've made a public post on our Patreon so that anyone can see them and have added a link into the description: www.patreon.com/posts/101478139
Sorry but Fastned Autocharge is not new. It’s been around for at least a couple of years. Also your nearest Fastned was Barnard Castle which has been open for 2 years!
What happened to the 150kw charge speed?
It depends on your SOC (lower the better), and battery temperature to get anywhere near this.
More than that if only the one vehicle? Walk away expecting a fast charge to continue, only to find another vehicle connects to the same box.☹️
You didn't show any of your screen shots.
Should have tested it after you’d activated it to show the actual auto charge process.
Totally appreciate the videos (and the honesty of the failed process) but it does highlight one of the few valid points that the EV hater community have; EV charging can be a phaff.
It can be but I learned from Dave’s experience and selected the charger first in the app and then plugged in. Took less than 60 seconds on the exact same charger that he used. No issues at all
Dave, great very handy video.
Auto charge or not still a scandalous price per kilowatt...
But still about a third of the cost per mile compared to petrol or diesel.
it is but businesses pay a higher price per kW compared to consumers, maybe they should publish the price they pay for it
@@GaryV-p3h Don’t think so. Cheaper, yes, but not a third of the cost.
So why not test the auto charge and see if it works ?
That's a future video using a different Fastned location.
@@davetakesiton Yes, but we were all wetting ourselves to see if it worked ! I'm going to sit in a darkened room. 🍼🍼🍼🍼😝😝😝
Doubt if you will hold on, the next nearest Fastned is over 100 miles away
@@davetakesiton Actually that is one good thing about me. Apart from a rare blood group. You don't want that because if you donate they text you every 10 mins then send the boys round !
A curious looking thumbnail photo, click here. Thanks Dave.
43kw at 55% is pathetic. 69p per kw is daylight robbery.
the car's BMS controls the speed of charge but yep, it is pricey
Let me know where you have found cheaper please.
69p isn’t bad when you see others at 85p, remember if you charge a lot with these chargers paying a subscription of £9.99 gets you 30% discount.
Great video as usally
It’s better that a lot of the rubbish old chargers out there but it’s nowhere near as easy as Supercharging a Tesla is it? If you have to register at every charger that’s not a great solution. We really need a register once and plug and go for all cars. This is better but not that impressed TBH.
Well if that was easy, I would hate to see a hard one.
Dave I would listen to your great instructions mate. 10:52 Just plug it in..
Tap and go would be a lot quicker. Don't like the idea that your financial data is held on the charger, at some point it will be scammed and you will be paying for someone elses charge.
Renault the French equivalent of Joe Lucas the Prince of darkness have stopped producing EV's and only making hybrids
Auto charge works for me on my Model Y. I just have to open the Fastned app and it initiates
That Fastned is quite good
Kia e nero 64kw
You did not say
Look in app join gold member £9.99
Now its .48 ppkw
And yes i used 4 sites all i do is plug it in
Im lucky got 6 bay 4 miles away
One think i do not like
On the unit two people charging
It not say plug 5 when you press stop button so you can easy stop the over car
Nice effort by Fastned, although it didn't look all that seamless to set up. My only question is why it has taken until 2024 for someone else to try this??
So i think Dave is wrong where he says they are now introducing it. I saw Andrew Till doing this down in ?Canterbury? FastNed either 2022 or early 2023.ETA i found it it was 2 years ago so 2022 in a Fiat500e
I believe Hyundai's have been capable of it for some time but there's been problems in it's conception!? I maybe wrong?
I used Autocharge on my MG5 LR over a year ago without any issues. It's just that there are not many about until more recently. Nice overview though.
Agreed, its amazing that no one else has implemented this feature it will be great to just drive up and plug in with no pissing about with apps.
@@johnmason5626 It seemed (to me) that if one wanted to know how the charge was progressing, you would need at least some form of app on your phone unless actually sitting in the car. One screen per two charge points was crassly organised. Do you need the app to terminate the charging session?
I have used Fastned a lot in Newcastle area not quite as slick as Tesla but very close , I stopped using them when they put the price up, they also don’t seem to have the idle fees, I regularly used to see the same cars on the chargers all day ( b**tards)
Clown world, so simple the future are you for real, who would want to do all this.😂🤣😂
I cannot believe we are still faffing with Apps like this!
Just go like the unmanned petro forecourts at Asda, Chip & Pin, Fuel & Go. Simples.
Poor Dave (No offence meant) spends God knows how long explaining how slick it's suppose to work, painful to watch it not achieved.
What a waste of time. Useless.
Temporary EVs until hydrogen takes over..hydrogen can be produced from oil and gas so no job lossess
