6:23 draymond green does so much insanely good defence in like 2 seconds in this clip. The early rotation to the perfect spot in the middle, pointing at the open man as well as talking so curry knows exactly where to rotate to, and attacking the ball to freeze it just long enough for curry to rotate and stop the open three. All that in a split second. What a player. Probably the best all around defender of all time
Great breakdown! The Mavs need to tweak their system if they want to go further in the Playoffs. Steve Kerr has shown how to stop their offense this year and prior to this, Tyronn Lue haunted the Mavs for years. It's a good thing Jason Kidd is in his first year, meaning he still has a lot more to bring to the Mavs. Hopefully they get somewhere close to a championship because not being so is a waste of a generational talent like Luka.
Honestly it was so sad to watch mavs having to play 5 out bc their best players were all point guards being brunson, dinwiddie, and luka so they had to go small ball. Do remember Mavs had the number one offense but poor defense two years ago. Now mavs became a good defending team with poor offense.
What you fail to mention is this defense goes back to Kerr's days in Arizona. They used this 1-2-2 / 3-2 / 2-3 defense there and he implemented and tweeked it a bit for GSW.
Great analysis. Learned some things watching this. This is a great defensive scheme but it takes a lot of intelligence and study among the players and a coaching staff that's not only great at theory but also exceptional at teaching.
I genuinely think Curry has made himself into one of the best off-ball defenders in the league. He always makes such accurate scramble rotations in any situation.
@@gabetv6355 I believe he just anticipated too soon on on-ball defense but he overall has always been a good defender. Not all-defense but just a good defender. He's a smart defender. People think being just a physical defender is the best defender but he now has the physicality to match his IQ on defense.
This just shows how valuable Wiggins is. He guarded Luka and Tatum during this playoff run and he basically slowed them down just enough for the Warriors’ offense to win them the games/series.
The Warriors used a lot of these concepts against the Houston 5 out offenses led by Harden. They took away the paint and the Rockets famously bricked their way out of the series.
In the '91 finals, in the first game, MJ was on Magic. Then in the 2nd game and till Game 5, it was Pippen-lock. Magic was bewildered and couldn't believe it. In this WCF, Wiggins was the Pippen-lock on Luka, and Luka was bewildered and couldn't believe it.
As a big man, the best thing to do against Luka seems to be staying down on all of the fakes and make him shoot over your length and height. Even if you get a bad contest it's better than him getting you in the air to draw a foul or just score with an easy layup.
When I watched this series, I heard the sports analysts predict that the Warriors had no defense for Luka. 'They' all said the Warriors are too short/small, and that Doncic would easily do whatever he wanted to do. After the Mavericks lost the series 4-1; the story changed to: the Mavs were out of their depth, that PHX should've been in the Western Conference Finals. The reason I've given your video a 'like' is because you're actually giving the Warriors the credit for being Champions. I'm especially upset because the narrative for the NBA Finals; Bos vs GSW, is how 'unworthy' the Celtics were to be there. The sports analysts could not stop talking about how inept Jayson Tatum (historic amount of turn overs), Jaylen Brown (pathetic scoring) and Marcus Smart (the flop-meister) played.
Warriors dynasty is still in tact, it even better when you realize that one of those finals was lost against Lebron James arguably the GOAT, it can’t wait to see what 2023 will bring!!
Very consistent of the Warriors defensive philosophy. They never over help when they have to they have the personnel AND the methods to consistently keep to their scheme (communication, pre switch or peel switching to perfection). Which is how they can keep Steph off match up hunts but also put him in the favorable off-ball positions.
Thanks for giving Kerr credit for the Warrior's success. i wonder what other coach would have seen Green's potential, allowed Curry to be himself, and convinced Iguodala to come off the bench. He also saw that David Lee, once considered one of the Warriors best players, did not fit with what was their proper, completely original style of play. Everyone loves the way the Warriors play, but no one else seems able to imitate it.
Kerr and the warriors already had experience against Luka ball in the playoffs. It was James Harden ball back in Houston 😂. Luka is a slightly better passer and a better post player while Harden was a much better shooter. Though in Houston, Harden had more talent around than Luka does right now.
Great breakdown! The Dubs haters kept posting Looney not biting on the Luka fakes as "he's so slow and un-athletic he accidentally played great defense on Luka!" Salty haters ....
Amazing analysis. Something I’ve seen from nobody else that you did was show everything you talked about happening in sequence which made it very digestible
The joke is that looney is too slow to bite on the first set of moves. Similar to how he would guard harden. He’d be dancing all over and looney is just standing there. Seriously though, his defense on smaller, faster, and crafty players has always been great. I’m glad he got his moments to shine this playoff run.
Hey coach, do you think the Celtics should try something similar with White/Pritchard who are constantly targeted by Jimmy Butler. Would you stick them on PJ Tucker and have them show so when he’s a screener you don’t have to worry about him floating to the 3p line above the break. Clearly a better corner guy and if you can contain him on the short roll and not give up ORBs it could be worth a look.
and here is the difference between Curry and players like Harden...the guy is not that skilled defensively but he works his ass off on the court....I've never really commented on this channel but dude, you got some great content here man, i've finally subscribed
Luka was force to drive coz his teammates are not converting and Dallas don’t have a strong big man. Hope that their new additions can improve the team. Go Mavs!
I seriously don’t believe if Steve Kerr hadn’t gone through all those James harden back in those crazy playoff matches he wouldn’t have had these scheme up his sleeve for Luka who has a similar type of play
OI, rephrase that, plz!...GSW do not need to "HIDE" Steph Curry, and they DON'T!! #30 is more often the cause of breakdowns and turnovers when teams try to attack HIM cos HE initiates the chaos and redo/switch so the rest of the defense has a straightforward job to do!!! Also, games won/lost with both teams shooting under 45% indicate their defenses were the "highlights", not the scoring...
Nigga you mean "if you don't want to win a chip, get CP3 on your team". That shit is proven and tested throghout the years. You're really judging and hate on a 23yrs old athlete.
Roflmao. You're stopping luka ball after a heated 7 game series against the suns this deep? On a deficient team with obvious shortcommings? It was their max reach at how the team was constructed. Although much better than ricks mavs imo
Mavs lack of fire power is the reason why they lost. If luka only had a Lavine type or Derozan around him. Plus a lack of center position because Powel is trash and kleber is not a center. This Mavs teAm is trash without Luka. Luka got tired after the Suns Series. No need for Dumb Breakdown like this....
🤣 you can’t play Luka ball if you want Levine and DeRozan, warriors have seen Luka ball before he’s called Lebron James, ball dominant player requires a 5 out offence to make he’s system work and after every playoffs series Luka loses it will be he doesn’t have enough help 🤣 🤣 🤣

Watching warriors' games being discussed by analysts makes me appreciate steve kerr.

It is refreshing watching the warriors play defence. Work of Art

This was the most in depth breakdown of the warriors defense I have seen. More so than Ben Taylor and thinking basketball imo too
Great analysis. Learned some things watching this. This is a great defensive scheme but it takes a lot of intelligence and study among the players and a coaching staff that's not only great at theory but also exceptional at teaching.
Mike Brown deserves a lot of credit, but Ron Adams has been a mainstay since Kerr got there.
I genuinely think Curry has made himself into one of the best off-ball defenders in the league. He always makes such accurate scramble rotations in any situation.
He's always been good in intercepting the ball.
Yeah it’s just his on ball defense is ass asl

I like how you observed Looney as not easily lured by pump fakes. It's big fact, even Wikipedia said that.
The Warriors used a lot of these concepts against the Houston 5 out offenses led by Harden. They took away the paint and the Rockets famously bricked their way out of the series.

Not true! MJ stayed on Magic. Pippen guarded him in certain situations. Never a whole game.

wild to think but for klay technically this is his 6th consecutive finals appearance in 6 consecutive playoff appearances😳

Warriors played this type of 5 out offense before in the Houston rockets so it's nothing new at all for them.
That hedge defense is brilliant.
That's beautiful defensive basketball

this is a great in depth analysis 🙌 makes me wonder how to breakdown this type of defense that the warriors have

You watch these and wonder how Steph has any energy on the offensive side of the ball. The dude is in superior shape.
Luka was force to drive coz his teammates are not converting and Dallas don’t have a strong big man.
Hope that their new additions can improve the team.
Go Mavs!
None of their new additions solve those problems 🤣 Luka ball won’t work against the warriors
Gentleman swept!!!
Man Mike Brown is so huge for the warriors defense man.
How do you get your clips lol
Dallas is lucky enough that gp2 didn't play in this series 😂

Steve Kerr and the coaching staff really out here playing chess.. not enough credit to them IMO.
This Dubs defense made them Rockets brick 27 3's
3:42 I think that's bad defense by the Warriors. The Mavs could've had an alley-oop. Then they left Luka wide open.
How come no one mentions Mike Brown
Luka ain't laffin no mo....is he ?????
Tyronn Lue is the Bill Belichick of basketball
I think the weakest point for the 5-out offense is their poor movement off the ball.
As a defender I preferred playing 5 out offense as I can relax since the offense are just in stand still with no movement.
@@vh2712 some teams play 5-out offense too but with lots of basket cuts,, stagger screens and split actions. Such is difficult to defend.

luka vs warriors look pretty unfear
The thing is the league players are rarely as conditionned as gsw players. It's not thar easy at all.

They didn't stop Luka😅. He average more than 30 points a game. His average points was better that Michael Jordan in the playoffs.
He was also a negative in +/- in every game except game 4, so it doesn't matter what his numbers where, he was ineffecient and ineffective
If you only watch on the box score.
And how many turnover he has? His fg % also dropped in this warriors series
