RANDY & THE RAINBOWS - "DENISE" (1963)

- Randy & the Rainbows are an American doo wop group from Maspeth, New York. The group was formed in 1962 in a neighborhood of Queens, and featured two pairs of siblings, along with a fifth member. The Safuto brothers had previously sung in the group The Dialtones. They recorded with the producers of The Tokens, releasing the single "Denise" in 1963. The song hit #18 on the US Black Singles chart and #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. "Denise" was written by Neil Levenson, and was inspired by his childhood friend, Denice Lefrak. The song later became a European hit for Blondie, with the title changed to "Denis". Randy & The Rainbows' follow-up single, "Why Do Kids Grow Up", barely scraped the pop charts at #97, and the group never charted again.
My name is Denise and I was born in 1963. I never knew this song existed until I heard it in my car just yesterday!!
Lucky lady! Great song!
That is the year this classic came out!
I was born in 1958 and didn’t hear of this song until my mid 50’s! My one daughter is named after me & I know isn’t aware of this song (yet)! . I can’t wait to surprise my namesake with this song! She’s 36 , I can’t believe I forgot to tell her of this song! Aghh getting old sucks! Lol and sh will undoubtedly have fun reminding of that! Lol
Denise the name of a former girlfriend of mine. She and I were married (not to each other) caused a lot of pain in our families and discontinued the relationship.
@@jrutt2675 no shit, Sherlok! That's why she mentioned it!🤣🤦♂
Who's still listening in 2024? 🎧
Me
I am, and I'm loving it!!!!
😊👍🏻 2024, I am 63 years old, born 1961
I was named after this song. My mom and sister would listen to this together. She was pregnant in 1963
This is so well orchestrated. They don't create musical art like this anymore....
The only big problem with this song is that it is much too short!
My bwautifull wife was named Marie denise called her denise all the time and sang to her she died in 2017 young age of 57 miss and love her every minute of every day
My name is Denise and my hubby heard this one day over the radio driving home. He was so excited about it and told me he heard it for the first time. I told him it was an old song and I couldn't believe he barely heard it. Tonight my 38 year old found it on youtube and sent me the link. My eyes are not blue but brown so I change that line for all the browned eyed girls named Denise aka nisi. It makes me happy to hear it again at my age of 67
I was 13 Denise when it came out. That was a great year and a sad one.
@@claudiacotner1638Yes, November 22 of that year was a most tragic day. 😭🇺🇸
Just change it to something like, "with your heart so true, I've got a crush on you".
Brown eyed Denise here to
One of those songs that defines a time in my life... I was 12 or 13 when this came out, and I would lay in the front seat, hands behind my head, with my feet out the window of my dad's '60 Ford Galaxy listening to the radio...
Love the car detail. Cars loomed large in my Legend as I was 12 in 1960 and pretty much obsessed with cars. I was 3 years away from getting my license although I've been driving since I was 10 because I grew up on a farm but by the time I was 15 we were living in the city. When I took that first driving test the examiner sitting next to me said that I was the most relaxed young driver he'd ever tested. And this is driving in the 'big city of Denver.' I beamed with pleasure and pride.
"Denise" is one of my favorites from the past. I was in high school in 1963 and I've loved this song ever since.
My Denise was born in 1967. So four years after this song. She is the love of my life, my forever wife. Last December 21st we celebrated our eleventh wedding anniversary. We met at work. She was my supervisor and I never thought that I would ever stand a chance with a beautiful, intelligent and funny woman like her. Everyday that I spend with My Denise is magical. And I will love her until the day that I die. Thank you Denise for loving me. Now, I'm going to cry.
Yes and I’m bawling out here too!!😭😭😭
You’ve a very lucky wife!
nice one mate 👍
Deus vos abençoe 😊❤❤❤
Denise amada 😊
Peaked as high as No. 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. Such a great song.
I was 13 in 1963 and my Dad bought me a transistor radio and when I went to bed at night I would put it half way under my pillow and listen to music just like this.Ahhhh the memories.😊😊
@@anonymousfemale9231: I was also 13 then.
My name is Denise I'm 62 and my sister's friend played it for me in 1980 that was the first time I ever heard it I Love it
This was made back in a time where people actually had to have talent and sing. There were no synthesizers or auto tune. These groups were so talented.
I was 9 years old when this song and group were active and popular. Still love it and glad I’m from that time. Music now is vomit
What is wrong with synthesizers? To use synthesizers effectively takes serious mastery. I recommend checking the song ''Edge of the Edge'' out by Panda Bear, as he uses synthesizers and samples exactly this song and it is very cool :D hopefully it changes your mind on sampling/synth work
As good as any harmony the Beach Boys ever recorded. Just a delightful song in every way.
Great song but harmony better than the Beach Boys? No way.

Nobody said "better".
In the DooWop style, yes. I am a HUGE Beach Boys fan.
I can’t believe this showed up in a car ad and reminded me I love this song ❤ my lil sister’s name 🌸
Heard that same ad
I don’t know what the ad was, because I just jumped over here right away, to verify that that’s what their playing. 😀👍🏼
Edit: I found it. It was for a Honda Prologue. I hope Honda paid Randy and the Rainbows. 😀🌈
Yep, heard that ad and had to get here.
The beginning is terrific. Glad you understood what that was. Most will never know.
i heard the song intro in the same tv commercial and knew exactly what it was and looked it up on youtube as easy as that and i still find that amazing, right at your finger tips.
My name is Denise and I was 5 years old when it came out and my mother bought the record for me. I was so in love with this song and I'm still in love with it. My birthday is in a few days and I think I will keep playing it ❤😊

How sad. So many lost years
How sad. So many lost years
No way
What do you think of it now?
I'm a young new grad nurse working the COVID unit & my oh so sweet patient showed me this song. She brought such a huge smile to my face : )
God bless you and your work
My God bless you for your work....i was a teen when this came out....we never dreamed about what the world had in store for us...mine was the army and war, which none of my generation was prepared for....your challenge is even more complicated and pleased to hear that there are still young people out there who are willing to stand up and be counted
My BFF in high school had the name & we somehow came across the song years ago.
Muahhhh
If you worked in the "COVID" unit, then you were more likely just bored as can be, listening to songs on RUclips because the hospitals were empty and you had nothing to do. I didn't know a single person who got sick with anything until people started taking those shots. No coughing, no signs of obviously sick or recovering people in public settings for at least a year of the "pandemic". Shots came, people started actually getting sick, including myself, and I never took one.
This song was probably the last of its kind and a milestone between the old rock n' roll and the advent of the Beatles and the British Invasion.
Exceptionally well worded!!!
The last one was probably Mr Lonely around Christmas 1964. Then the rock n roll/doo wop era was definitely over, at least for the teenage world.
Then by 65, what used to be rock n roll and doo wop evolved into songs made for a more mature audience, because the kids of the late 50's/early 60's started to become adults. This led to the golden age of Motown in the mid 60's, Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, The Four Seasons and Elvis' comeback in 68-69.
The Beach Boys were one of the few bridges between two generations
@@hothemeep1219: Excellent analysis! Never thought of it that way.
@@hothemeep1219: Forgot about the 1963 Kennedy assassination, not to mention the 1966 Texas Tower sniper and the soon to explode Vietnam war, which may have triggered the end of middle class idealism.
@@hothemeep1219...setting up the 197os. Most likely the pinnacle of the post-war music era.
Loved Blondie's version until I heard this on the radio one day. This is how it should be sung.
There will never great music like this again that began in the 1950's until the late 1970's and included rock'n'roll, country, folk!

An absolute supreme, perfect unsurpassed masterpiece of euphony!!!!!
Much better than the caca-phony of this era.
@@Smedley1947: You are 250% correct!
I always wondered where the song in the Honda commercials came from, now I know.
Right, you can barely tell because there are no vocals. Heard the melody on the ads and knew it was familiar. After 4-5 times...it's Randy & the Rainbows!
@@johnsweet8508 My dad had to tell me where that song came from, but you are right, that's exactly who sang that.❤️
My Sophomore year in high school. So many memories. It was an innocent time, no profanity. Pop songs were about girls, cars, love, lost love. The "Change," I believe, began with JFK's death, and the increased military involvement in Vietnam, which affected everyone in some way, not for the better. Love the memories this song brings to mind!!
yes, but as a soldier then, ours was not to reason why....ours was to do or die....and into the valley of death rode the brave 50,000....as Pete Seeger pinned the works '''''when will they ever learn"
Ah yes, an innocent time where people are still segregated by color! Take the nostalgia goggles off
I agree about the assassination. It happened right in front of us and I always felt like it blew away any meaningful direction we might have gone in because it was just too much.

I lived on 72nd st.,around the corner from the Zero brothers, (top left two) in Maspeth, ,My cousin was lead singer in a group with them, called The Crowns..,he decided to join the Air Force about 1962-----they replaced him with the Safuto brothers,,,changed their name, & the rest is history....
Right on!
It's a very very nice song.
Hola soy Denise Sánchez, de Panamá 🇵🇦 y nací en 1963 también 🙏
I started smiling when i heard this song..
I worked with a Denise and I always called her Denise-Denise. Her blue eyes smiled every time I said it.
Makes me smile...back in the late 60's in Salt Lake City my first gf was a blonde, blue-eyed sweetie with an angelic face. I would sing this to her and she would laugh. Happy times.
The backdrop of my life growing up in 50s-60s. Lucky to have enjoyed all of these as they were released on radio and for years beyond.
One can say 1963 was the last year of the 1950's like sound on the radio by the musical acts, like this song, before the British invasion the following year.
I think the 50s ended and the 60s started either with the plane crash or The Twist,a major change.
1963 or 1964 was the last year of the 1950's feel.
@@srmichel417 No, the '50s conservatives still dominated until the sudden and despicable deed on Nov. 22, 1963 put the radical war-hawks and big government people in control.
Couldn't agree more
Yes, you're right, and innocence died completely in music ( it already began dying in that ill- fated tour that ended on Feb. 3, 1959.).
You don't have to be a Denise, to love this song.
Back when everything about this country was great.

Only haters deny this fact... We just were not as progressive with our attitudes , everything was more strict , but thankfully liberals came along to loosen some of that up -

Peggy Sue + Sheila + Four Seasons + Neil Levenson + Randy & The Rainbows = Denise and total greatness.... no matter how many times you listen you never tire of it - it's just 'perfect' in every way - loved it when I was 12 years old, love it still today ... p.s. no key change first time, then repeat the bridge again with key change 2nd time. The bridge is too great to only be heard once.

Just One of the best Hit singles of 1963 the music from this decade is just really Super
The years 1960-1964 were incredible with so many marvelous songs. The Shirelles, Dion, Ricky Nelson, Neil Sedaka, The Tokens, Del Shannon, Bobby Vee, Gene Pitney, and JohnnyTillotson. Then you had your one hit singers like Shelly Fabares,Little Peggy March, Gene Chandler, and Barry Mann. The early 60’s was something except for Nov 22, 1963.
