STAR TREK Logical Thinking #44 - Two Wrongs Fallacy

- Educational PSA where Mister Spock corrects some crewmembers after overhearing them employing a logical fallacy in their discussions.
Had NBC decided to teach principles of sound reasoning in the mid-1970's they could do no better than to have the logical Mister Spock do the teaching. As an addition to the the two-dozen or so Public Service Announcements I created featuring the animated crew of the Starship Enterprise, I have created a new series of PSAs featuring Mr. Spock called "Logical Thinking." Using the Vulcan science officer to educate them in proper reasoning is "Only Logical" as he states at the end of each PSA.
Done in the style of Filmation's 1973-75 Animated STAR TREK series.
The shots of everyone enjoying Flint's performance seem like a very nice tribute to all the crewmembers who have been in this series so far. 🙂
We need these on the illogical conundrum that is RUclips.
Indeed!
Or in the Press
Or in Academia
A prevalence of cheating has become a norm in our society. Getting caught is seen as the only real immoral act, and then deflection and projection ensues.
If both sides in a debate have done wrong, please think less of both sides...but deal with the wrong at hand.

It's called integrity, which is perhaps why Vulcans don't lie. Your question presupposes I have. Who would I lie to and for what purpose? Perhaps you've missed a couple moral lessons growing up?
NEW SETTING ALERT!!!! 🚨🚨🚨🚨
Wow...this one just BLOWS MY MIND! I think you managed to somehow fit EVERY REGULAR and SEMI-REGULAR TAS character in here, GREAT JOB! And bringing back Flint as well?
CHDanhauser, you truly are spoiling us here! 😍😅😁♥️
I reused the background and some scenes from my multi-part full episode "Ptolemy Wept" which features the return of Flint the immortal. Please check it out on my channel.
More cameos..... That would be best.
I only just recently found this channel. I've been a fan of the original Animated Series since I was a little kid so I love checking out these videos here.
So glad you appreciate these videos. Enjoy!
I liked how you mixed the background music better. Far to often the background music for the show was the worst part of it. It’s nice to hear remixed in the background and not over baring what the characters are saying. The piano music was good too.
Thanks. As long as the dialogue is clear, I am usually happy with the sound mix. It could be better, but it is a matter of opinion just how loud is too loud for background sound effects.
@@CHDanhauser Well ya did a good job. Keep up the good work. ;)
One of these days, the TAS crew will learn to have conversations far away from the Vulcan
Actually, most illogic happens out of earshot of Spock. It's only the occasions when he overhears them making bad arguments that warrant a video.
Those Vulcan ears!
Hey, he even listens at the door, which are left open for him.

That guys star fleet career is sunk. Probably make him a red shirt guy and send him on a mission with kirk and spock. They probably have a tally on the transporter console like the world war two air craft.
They cut little notches into it, on the side you don't see.
Thank you very much. I always enjoy these and learn a lot. I do agree that you had audio blending problems. At times, you had that creepy mystery music and the Vulcan chords while the background talking was still going on. They really made it harder to understand Spock.
thats like one of the main patterns of human behaviour that would have to stop first if we ever wanted a trek utopia

Good god I think this might be the only example I've ever seen of a Vulkan explaining their logic. Normally the terms Logical and Illogical are simply invoked by Vulkans in much the same way one might accuse a course of action as being heretical.
You need to watch more _Star Trek,_ then, because they explain their positions frequently.
I've decided that Spock's reply to T'Pring's explanation of her actions in "Amok TIme" is sarcastic.
"Logical, flawlessly logical" he said, when what he meant was, "You are a liar and a bigot; you didn't want to marry me despite my family being one of the wealthiest and illustrious on Vulcan because I am half-human. You didn't want to be shamed by cancelling the wedding so set up this deathmatch to either end my life, or my captain's life and my career. And you got T'Pau, who didn't want to serve on the Federation council because she hates aliens, to be Mistress of Ceremonies."
A great episode with a great lession. Bravo!
Captain Kirk.cheated on the Kobayashi Maru test. He got into Star fleet Academy.
@John, Nicholas Meyer “expanded” on Kirk’s life quite a bit in WoK: having an illegitimate son, cheating on a test at the academy, not being able to follow regulations and raise the shields when he was supposed to…
But since the animated series takes place before WoK, I think we should go with the spirit of the pre-Meyer Trek here and live in blissful ignorance of the “revelations” of WoK. At least, that’s what I’ll do in my head canon. 😀
And, sadly, one all of us employe and are likely guilty of practicing.
As executive officer, Spock will no doubt be reviewing Marquel’s qualifications record closely after overhearing this….
Hm. I wonder just how many rub down silhouettes the animators used to fill the background for the concert. I have a few still left over from my college days back in the seventies.
The piano is playing the music from Requiem for Methuselah (S3:E19).
Yes. That is Flint the Immortal from "Requiem for Methuselah" playing it. He's is making a cameo.
The more you know,dee, dee,dee ,deeee!Or Knowing is half the battle,G.I. JOOOOEEE1!!
Of course, Spock is now duty-bound to report what he could not help overhearing or else be guilty of dereliction.
Yep.
Spock's a narc. The Exec is the ultimate cop on any ship. The captain is judge.
To say nothing of how stupid they were discussing such sensitive matters in a crowd in the first place; let alone with a notorious sharp-eared eavesdropper in the same room. 😁
@@jasontoddman7265 after you make a logical fallacy, as the brother did with his duplicitous actions...he made the logical fallacy of telling a third party...who then blabs it in public to impress a woman he hopes to bed after the romantic concert.
@@STho205 Maybe that particular logical fallacy will be covered in a future video. 😄
Spock Replies "Talking about something you should not in front of others is a mistake, but not a fallacy since it is not an argument. All mistakes are not fallacies. But mistakes within logical arguments often are."
Curt, I love these.
I'm glad.
Pointing out hypocrisy is quite proper. Jesus Christ often did it. Pointing out the speck in his eye while ignoring the plank in your own.
As always, your videos are only logical.

Two fallacy's don't make a right. Wait that's... :D
YAY for logic
2 wrongs don't make a right...
But 3 lefts do.
They neglect the position that if the 2nd wrong prevents the 1st wrong from succeeding the 2 wrongs do make it right.

If all other star fleet officers are honest, and I overstate my qualifications, I will be promoted over a more competent officer, which will reduce the effectiveness of the command structure.
If all other officers are honest, and I understate my qualifications, a less competent officer will be promoted over me, which will have the same bad effect.
If other officers in general overstate or understate their qualifications to a certain (average) degree, then I ought to do the same, in order to be promoted to the right level.
Sometimes a second wrong _does_ cancel out a first wrong, at least in its most important effect.
A very dumb decision to discuss someone faking his qualifications in such a public setting; even without the keen-eared Spock (a senior officer to boot) being in the same room. He should be more careful what he's saying because Spock isn't likely to ignore what he just overheard. Now the people they were discussing will now likely be investigated and prosecuted if caught lying about their qualifications. They too perhaps for not reporting such actions, which could actually imperil the ships they are on.
True. Spock only pointed out one of LCDR Markel's mistakes. He also could have suggested perhaps not throwing your brother under the bus in front of your superior officers. He probably did that after this video.
@@CHDanhauser And then probably reported him for not reporting his brother. That other woman too for that matter. I would imagine there are regulations are withholding knowledge of such things from official channels in the 23rd century.
They should all be sent to the brig with Mudd, Cyrano, Ming, the Gorn and the other reprobates! Where is an agonizer when I need one?
I would suspect such flagrant dishonesty would be quickly discovered by Star Fleet.
@@user-ug2hk3go6i Well, it pretty well *was* - if you count Mr. Spock as an officer and therefore a representative of Starfleet.
That is one large concert hall! Are they holding it on the Flight Deck?
If so, then they made the same mistake as in TOS of having a curved saucer-section hallway leading to engineering in the cylindrical part of the ship. Kirk walked through it here, while Spock walked it on the way to see Scotty trying to phaser through the wall to get into main engineering.
@@sandal_thong8631 That was in "The Naked Time" but they also showed the full curved corridor in "The Ultimate Computer". Possibly we could argue it was engine rooms in the saucer?
However, we also saw a section of curved corridor in "The Immunity Syndrome" in a scene where Spock and McCoy walk right up to the Hangar Deck doors! So, maybe there are curved corridors in the secondary hull after all? 😉
@@MatthewCaunsfield "Secondary hull" was the phrase I was looking for. They call the top the saucer section, the secondary hull the "engineering section" (although there's an impulse engineering section in the saucer that we never see) and the warp nacelles.
I found a clip from "The Immunity Syndrome" that you referred to: ruclips.net/video/bu7z8jFGM1g/видео.html
Spock and McCoy get off the turbolift, go straight down the hallway, turn right into another straight hallway in front of the entrance door to the hangar deck. -It does not match the curved hallway set built on Desilu Stage 09! So maybe they built this hallway set just to connect to the shuttlebay?- The shuttlecraft is usually on the planet set in a different stage 10, -so maybe all we saw is on that stage.-
When the door opens the hangar with the shuttlecraft seems to match the scene from "Journey to Babel" with the grey circle but missing the yellow line in that episode. They changed both to a yellow circle inside a red square in the special editions when shuttles come and go, but not when actors are present.
In "Journey to Babel" which was broadcast earlier in the season, Kirk and Spock walk down the curved corridor, then we cut away, then we cut back to them standing in front of the door to the Hangar Deck. -So maybe they hadn't built that corridor yet, or didn't use it in that episode? Or didn't want more extras to go to stage 10 since they had the honor guard?-
I see the clip from "The Ultimate Computer" ruclips.net/video/x6Z18LIk_8s/видео.html
They walk almost the entire length of the curved corridor, turn right and after a few steps enter main engineering. Someone did a video considering which section of the ship housed Scotty's main engineering. Dilithium crystals are kept there, and in this episode the M5 computer sends a beam to the warp engines, killing a crewman. At the end of "Day of the Dove," the entity leaves the secondary hull, suggesting that main engineering is in that part of the ship. So I think they just built it that way and didn't consider the inconsistency.
Also, it's a large set, so I read they would redress it for other needs, like the theater in "The Conscience of the King."
In "The Naked Time" Spock walks the curved corridor to stop Mr. Scott's cutting into the wall and inform him he doesn't have time for a safety factor. Kirk shows up when he's about done and they open the yellow door and go through, although we don't see either engineering from that side, or the hallway from engineering side, -so I don't think it's really connected.- It's not the same red door at the end of that short hall we see in "The Ultimate Computer."
Also known as the "Tu quoque fallacy"
Now I Know!!!...
I'm not certain that this is a valid example of the "two wrong equals a right" fallacy. If the assertion "everyone does X" is, in fact, *true*, then it would indeed be valid to put forward this fact as support for you to also do X, regardless of legality / morality of the act.
The argument is that the *actual* standards that apply to X are different that the official/published standards, and the official standards have not been updated.
It *would be* this fallacy if, in fact, everyone doesn't do it. However, given that the certifications and missions accomplished information should be trivial to access / review, yet at least one other officer was promoted with similarly exaggerated accomplishments... Given the statements made, the conclusion is at least arguable.
The question of "_Should_ the published standards be held to" is a separate question altogether.
Let's go!!!
So Spock overheard Mr. Markel admitting his brother was gaining a new and important position through dishonesty, did he report this to Star Fleet?
Sure, two wrongs do not make a right, but three rights make a left.
I am sure he reported both individuals. The mister brown who faked his own records and mister markels brother Who is going to attempt to do the same. After all if he brought up This, but did not act upon correcting it, especially if it means a problem for starfleet and its efficiency. It would be very illogical.
Great job. Constructive criticism: the background noises and music were just a tad bit too loud and initially made it hard to hear dialogue. Dialogue volume seemed better about halfway thru, but i think the background level could still have been lower
Am i... first?

It doesn't matter either way.
Why don't you have Spock explain the 2020 elections so we can explain that to our children in the future
Great video! Great video series!
Glad you like them! They are a labor of love!
One of the most exploited fallacies.
Pretty childish argument. Not hard to illustrate.
I like your videos but the voice actors make no effort to mimic the original voices. You spend so much time to do the videos and yet you fall short with the voices. Spend some time recording your voice and try to come close to the originals.
