The beautiful province of Zeeland in The Netherlands in 1919 in color! Part-1 [Enhanced & colorized]

- The province of Zeeland consists of a number of large islands in the South-West of The Netherlands. Part-1 of this film shows the simple and hard rural life of its inhabitants more than a century ago in 1919. At the time nearly all of them wore the traditional dress.
Characteristic are the two small golden reflectors that are worn at the side of the women's caps.
Some viewers have jokingly brandmarked them as satellite solar panels.
A tradition was to "coupe" horse's tails and beautify them with ribbons to be shown-off at local horse shows. Zeeland was and is primarily an agricultural area of The Netherlands. In the film women can be seen picking various fruit including goose berries.
Zeeland has had a long fight with the sea. Dikes and dunes often were not high or strong enough causing Zeeland to be flooded often during many centuries until in the 1960's the Dutch government executed the "Delta plan". This involved closing-off the waters between the islands from the sea by means of large dams and huge sea locks.
In recent years it has become apparent that this is prohibiting fish like salmon to swim up the Dutch and German rivers to sperm. Therefore some of the sealockes are now opened slightly to let them pass through.

why do all european cities have no green spaces those old cities ofcourse its nothing but cement and stone it seem europeans have hated trees this is why there is very little native old forest left in europe in any at all

I remember living in Zeeland in the mid-seventies and traditional costumes and headdresses were been worn by some of the older women exactly the same as in this great film.
Ate you sure it wasn't for a special event?
@@GUITARTIME2024 It may well have been for a special event, it is just I have always remembered the image of the elderly couple in costume. Funnily enough, I now live in Brittany and see costumes been worn for all sorts of events.
@@michaelturner6425 Zeeland is bit out of the way by Dutch standards, so I guess its possible that some old ladies might wear the traditional stuff in the 1970s when going to town, but its possible they worked as tour guides or it was Easter or something. In America, to see an old woman in pre-1920s clothing with bonnets and such in the 1970s, when I was a kid, would have been like from another planet for any American.
@@GUITARTIME2024 Traditional dresses are still work today in some places, not just for special events. Granted these places are getting rare. A village close to me it's still quite common to wear them, when they come to the markets it's pretty clear where they come from.
@@relo999 name a few places. It has to be part of a festival or "Bloemenstoet" or something.
Look how clean everything is ! The roads the canals .no pollution, no litter because there wasn't so much packaging on things then .I loved this film ,being transported back ioo years ago ,lovely, thank you
Keep in mind that places that were generally not very clean were probably not being filmed.
I've been to this part of the Netherlands not long ago. Its very clean, for the most part.
They grew their own or got it local. Incomparable to now. We had millions fewer folk on the planet. We have managed to litter space, and left items on Mars (not the Rover) which will be there for eternity.

It's amazing. This is one of the most impressive videos I've ever seen. All looks like in a fairytale. The past that came to life. Thank you so much for the video. Greetings from Russia
It's really impressive aerial shots in 1919!
@Hannibal S 33 Man, are you alright?
My mother was born in Duinbeek, near Oostkapelle and within biking distance from Middelburg. This footage reminds me of my grandmother who was in full costume until arthritis made it impossible for her to dress up anymore. I remember all the old folk mostly in black. And before the Internet, the rommelmarkt was a WWII collector's dream come true. One of my great uncles, a Canadian, fought here as well.
VERY INTERESTING FILM, AMAZING MUSIC- RESPECT FROM POLAND
The Netherlands in 1919 has a higher standard of living than most countries in 2021
1919 Netherlands was still an empire so that is not too crazy. I'd argue that even citizens of classical empires had a higher standard of living than many alive today. Actually, the Roman elite were so wealthy by today's standards they would be trillionairs. In short: decent wealth distribution is apparently very challenging when those trying to figure it out are presently rich themselves.
@@Ronnet No. Germany had almost no colonies after WW2 and they were still rich.
They were so lucky to live in a better world. Since then, which is a very short time, humanity has lost everything to be proud of.
How come? 1919 was the year women had just gotten their voting rights, miscarriages were rampant, poverty was rampant, domestic abuse was rampant, LGBT-activity was punishable by law, death rates were through the roof because of the Spanish Flu and lacking medical services. So please tell me, how were they more lucky?
How ???
It’s only one year since the worlds biggest war and only 20 till the next world catastrophe.
I am scared of what it will be like in another 100 years
More of the same but different.
At least we have our 8k material we then can scale up to real time virtual environment plugged into our brains.
Time wait for no person. I was before scared. But you know what? You would not even notice that we change. 😁
We’ll probably be in the thousand year reign of Christ in another 100 years
Let's just hope there will be something
Bring back the old Europe
Go to Russia, there they have it. But it seems they want the new Europe which includes washing machines and toilets.
Mijn vader is geboren in 1916.
Dit doet me veel . Prachtig
So beautiful n no plastics
Most interesting part I notice about these videos is that in these times lots of people can be seen hanging about. A lot has improved since those times, but the pace of living in these days are something that can be missed.

JUST WONDERFUL!!!!

Watch the Old Europe in full swing. Tear jerker
Indrukwekkend. Prachtig geschiedenis document.
Heritage ruined through mass media.

Beautiful Holland, kind people, Dutch women can see that they do a lot of things, hard-working people, compared to my country, China, which era is living in the dark age
Thank you for an amazing film.
Everything is perfect in a natural way, something we cannot achieve in our now over successful modern era.
Oh to go back - things were tough but people didn’t know any better.
Thanks to the great invention of motion pictures, we can transcend time and places. We can travel to 100 years ago freely and see people a long time ago as if they are our neighbors.
One of your best yet! The aerial shots at the beginning were quite breathtaking. And the costumes worn by the women are so intriguing, especially the head-dresses with their ornamentation. What a level of social homogeneity for everyone to dress absolutely the same.
I'm not totally sure that's daily dress. That might be Sunday clothes, or part of a festival.
looks similar to amish people in US
Very beautiful. I imagine minus the cars, it was how the town and people looked like for a hundred years.
102 years ago, it's hard to imagine we still can see it.
Master Rick: I’ve dreamed about time travel since my earliest days. At age 67, it has been realized! I view their past, I am their future, and it happens in the eternal present. Thank you? Not sufficient, sir.
My pleasure! I'm pleased you are enjoying my videos
It's embarrassing that these old cities are prettier, more elegant and livable than our dysfunctional ones today. Their simple and harder life was healthier than ours, and it's likely that they were happier than we are, too.
Cities where more beatiful because after the war we were only interested in rebuilding quickly and cheaply because there where many homeless and there was no money due to the war. Before the war we already started building ugly houses, because the Dutch population skyrocketed. On youtube there is a film made by the american goverment called ''Know your ally, The Netherlands'' you can see the rebuilding and de simpler cost effective buildings take shape.
They where happier from the tales i hear from the elders around here (i live in Zeeland) People were very friendly, if one man had a machine to plow the ground he went around the village and did that to every front porch, so people could easily grow some extra food. People also traded old stuff like clothing and pans, and traded fish for rabbits, or fruit and veggies depending on what kind of food the men gathered.
But the work was very though and people died young to diseases.
Wow....bridging 100 years of photos and videos in color is absolutely amazing.
U doet zeer belangrijke historische documentatie! Dank hiervoor!
Amazing !! this is how all historical footage should be restored.
The interesting thing about this video is that it show life as it was from the middleages until that moment. The only 'modern' things are the bicycles and that one car. Zeeland was (and for the most part still is) very rural.
Ehhh more since the 18th century really
I’ve seen similar films that have been color added but this is by far the best because of the addition of music in the background instead of just silent movies
Incredible quality! Also, some of the women from that period are really built strong
Yes because they had to work hard everyday for everything people women today who get everything premade and automated. 💪
it is amazing Rick. women worked a lot in the past. greetings from Marrakech Morocco.
Beautiful and beautiful music.
Omg this is amazing. The women's seems very polite.
Amazing, simply amazing. To have a detailed view into the life a hundred years back...incredible. Everyone dressed better than nowadays, there was far less bustle and the architecture so much more interesting.

Love the headgear that the women of that era wears...sure it has a different meaning and significant
Now this is impressive. This is sort of, what I've been talking about. If we can get all the old film looking like this or slightly, better it will be indistinguishable from modern day film. Truly, bringing the past into the present.
Bravo. This is really, quite, breathtaking. My Best.
Zo mooi. En kompleet vergeten.
This came recommended to me by youtube. What a lovely video thankyou for sharing. Gave me an understanding of what life was like for my Oma as a 5 year old child after the war.....
Bloody hell those women are tough, looks like they could literally manhandle their men.
The city is called Middelburg and the movie was shot on a thursday, because there was/is a weekly thursday market in front of the city council hall. The people wearing the costumes are mosty people living on farms or in little fishing villages on the island of Walcheren that have come to the market to sell their products.
Of all the RUclips videos I've watched these restored films get the most intelligent and kind comments I've ever read. That is as comforting and soothing as watching them. Thank you for sharing them and thank you to all who had such lovely insightful things to say.
Superb video of my beloved Zeeland. Many thanks for making this possible.
The music chosen for this is really nice.
Hoe mooi bijzonder!

@@AG-wb3db WHAT?! Bruh...allow me to keep my harsh words. I feel sad for your country. Dutch people & women were great it is a great sadness to lose you guys. yourself is an reflection of dying west. When a Civilization is in declining, Weaklings especially some women firstly abandoned their mother culture and surrender themselves completely to the invaders, this happened in Chinese history as well, We call those people as "sinners traitors and faceless (No shame) people" And very heavily punished them when took our nation back. They were allowed to live only on boats. I heard of in Europe that was the same, after WW2 in nazi occupied European nations, traitors got half of their hair shaved. Guess what? I do NOT agree with that, When a nation is so weak, everyone is a sinner. Those weaklings only want to live better as long as they didn't sold or try to stop other resisting people, They are not more sinful that us all. those people were treated to harshly, hopeful one day, they can treat you with fairness & kindness. Thank you Rick for this beautiful video. It is so special to see, I can almost not comprehend that this is real footage from 100 years ago. My great-grand mother is from Zeeland and lived during this time. I have a picture of her wearing this type of traditional clothing! It is a shame to see some of the comments are negative, political, or hateful. Therefore I just want to say again that I appreciate your work. And also that I think we can both value the past and the current times for the good parts and also acknowledge the lesser parts. But let's be kind to each other now, while we still can! :)
Well said, thanks!

Great piece of work. Congrats. Whoever filmed it back then had a good eye for composition and detail. People back then were hard working and God fearing people. While life was less complicated, it was also pretty hard. One needed to work hard and stay healthy. There were not that many good medications back then and people could die easily from an infection. Child mortality was also higher back then. All that made for strong, tough and hardened people. But there was also time for play :-)
Bravo!

You have no comprehension of how hard life was then, of how hard people of all ages except the youngest and elderly, especially here, where the sea continually tried to reclaim the land.
