Ian Anderson is pure genius with his music.
Taught himself how to play the flute.
@@ponytrekker9315 Only to realize later when his daughter started taking lessons he had been playing it wrong for decades... LOL Sounded good to me. :-)
Brilliant
Oh, Ian Anderson was 100% clean, all the time, he once said he had an addictive personality, he knew he'd be damned if he did drugs, so he shied away from it.
Yes. Many people just assume he did drugs but not only was he afraid of his addictive personality as you state but he was also afraid of catching some dreadful disease. He likened passing a joint to licking the handle of men's toilet LOL Only Ian!
@@iarocks44 "I don't use drugs, because everything that I've been able to do so far, I have been able to do without becoming involved in education, religion or drugs.
"I don't even smoke grass.I have never been drunk, sometimes I drink wine but I couldn't become drunk. I have drunk enough to make people drunk, but my mind clamps down and as soon as I feel my own perception changing, I clamp back and strictly adhere to the normal. There is something about me as a person that demands that I be always in total control of myself. But this is just a personal viewpoint. I don't think drugs are bad, I think in fact that drugs are necessary for most people, just to stay alive these days."
" I didn't really enjoy being around people who were doing drugs, so I just took myself often to read a book somewhere, and waited for it all to kind of evaporate from the rock and roll lifestyle. But of course it hasn't."
I actually watched him say he didn't like sex, either. He claimed sex had killed the mystical element of love and reduced it to mere physical pleasure.
@@windyhead7960 This is a direct quote from Ian Anderson also - I didn't make it up.
Interiewer: Throughout your career you’ve always been out of step with
your contemporaries. Was there any sex and drugs on the road with Jethro Tull?
Ian - No. But it wasn’t because of any morality, it was because I was shit scared of catching some awful disease. I also didn’t want to risk my addictive personality by smoking anything stronger than cigarettes. I’m not one of those people who could smoke a couple of cigarettes a day. I was smoking as many as I could afford. So I thought I’d better control that before I got involved with everyone passing around the standard soggy joint… which I thought was a bit like licking the handle of a gents toilet. Why would you want to do that?
Here is the reference if RUclips lets it stand - It's from 2016 - www.loudersound.com/features/the-prog-interview-ian-anderson
I'm glad you picked this video - I saw this band during this tour with the balloons tossed out and you are 100% right - I have never forgotten it! and i am 60 years old now! and still a big fan!
I saw them several times in the 70s and 80s. I always got my money’s worth. Ian Anderson put on a hell of a show. Every time.
62 yo guy here in the States, Been a fan of JT, for over 50 years
Me too!
When you go to a Jethro Tull concert you dress "Elizabethan style" because that's how the group dresses.....It is an unforgettable concert!!!!
I think they look like medieval musicians ... true rock lordes
You REALLY need to check out the Madison Square Garden performance of Thick As A Brick It's amazing. A couple of things, in the 70's I saw the band after a concert in the restaurant/lounge of a hotel. Little drinking (beer), Ian didn't do drugs or drink and they were just discussing the show they had just done. Each person in the band 'played' a character that was almost the opposite of their real life personas. If you watch any interviews of them, they all come across as completely normal, even Ian.
Carl Swenson I was at the MSG show.... you know when your witnessing greatness.
Jethro Tull is, GREAT, LIVE &, STUDIO.
Have to say that it was one of my greatest joys seeing them perform this live many moons ago!
Homeless gypsies, Ian Anderson and his motley band of minstrels . I love his stage presence. One leg stance and all the trills.
For all the reactions I've seen you guys do I must be sure you now understand that most modern music is manufactured in factories....the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's had music that was written and crafted by musicians who knew what they were doing. Jethro Tull is a prime example of free creativity unbounded by expectation, convention or record company edicts... long live real music.....
There was NOTHING like a stadium concert in the '70's and '80's,,,,,or probably EVER will be. 🔥🔥🔥😎
Floyd pulse tour in '94 was the best show i've ever attended, and i saw hendrix live at the isle of wight 1970,but that was an exception, the 60's,70's and 80's gigs were an absolute blast.
@@TheCornishCockney I think Pearl Jam,,,,was the last of the GREAT stadium shows,,,😥😥😥👍
I saw them in the early 70s at the Anaheim Stadium. We got there early in the day to claim a spot very close to the stage for the evening concert. I think it was the first time they had Tull-a-vision. A huge screen so everybody could see them up close. Has to be my favorite concert ever.
That was actually two songs, after he finished singing "No way to slow down" they finished by transitioning to the song Black Sunday at the end. I've been to a Tull concert and them throwing the big plastic ball into the audience was pretty standard. A very wild time.
Saw Jethro Tull live twice... you are so right... they were an experience I will never forget! Ian flitting around the stage with his flute.... so energetic.
I was lucky enough to see Tull live three times, twice in the 70's and then again in '99. They were magical experiences. I still have several Tull albums on CD and crank them frequently in my car.
JETHRO TULL, "LOCOMOTIVE BREATH". ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS I'VE EVER WITNESSED.. AND NOW YOU KNOW WHY..."THICK AS A BRICK", "CROSS EYED MARY"....
YOU MUST WATCH TULL LIVE AT ISLE OF WHITE “MY GOD” from ‘70 I think. It’ll blow your mind!!
Hey, Anderson had enough of a personality on his on that he didn’t need drugs!!! 😂😂
Guy on the piano is psycho 😂
I LOVE Ian Anderson! Jethro Tull was a steady favorite since the 70’s!
When Ian Anderson looks at you... You have no idea if he's going to tell you the best story ever or attack you with a lute :)
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jethro Tull were unique. They were a fabulously talented group of musicians that opened up a new space that they could call their own. They were leaders not followers.
You don’t play like that drunk or on drugs...I have seen them over 10 times ...pure genius
Gentlemen, That's a Rock show!
Dudes, you have to hear and see this band do Thick As A Brick in Madison Square Gardens!!
A Jethro Tull concert is an event. Watch the Thick as a Brick Live concert.
Martin Barre on guitar...damn! Undersung hero...
This is one of the best guitar performances EVER by Marty ...
Listen to Boureé by these guys, it's their take on J.S. Bach and it is a beautiful song.
The FLUTE does not get the credit it deserves; for just how hard that damn thing is to play.
Tull was everything I listened to in the 70s. I was at the 76 Thick as a Brick show at MSG.
In the 70's when they toured the states I saw them 3 times and they were always incredible! Also caught one Ian solo show divinity. A favorite memory is when my mom would tell me its bed time I would plead for one more song and then listen to thick as a brick, 45 min long!! I personally liked your studio reaction better because I just about fell out of bed laughing. When the flute came in, both of your heads almost twisted off looking at each other at the same time lmao! You couldn't have planned that any better if you tried ! GOOD STUFF !!!
Jethro Tull are great musicians, they are not crazy playing!!!!
Also, they usually closed their concert with Locomotive Breath, so this song was the encore after playing for two hours already!
'It's our first time seeing them live'...oh boy this'll be fun:). I've been lucky to see them live, unforgettable gig.
WENT WITH SOME TULL LIVE HUH GUYS??? LOL :) YEAHHHHH, YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT: LIVE IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 77, THICK AS A BRICK :)
Quick side note : from the point in the video where he sent the large balloon out into the audience, the song morphed from "Locomotive Breath" into "Black Sunday", which they only played a small amount. Watch the "Black Sunday" video, it's excellent as well!
You guys must check out Tull's performance of " Thick as a Brick " live at madison square garden.
You are right!! Back in the day so many artists were just as good live! They looked like came out of the woods. Maybe Robin Hoods merry men ?
Songs from the Wood! My fave Tull album!
I love that you guys are doing reactions to live performances. Best way to enjoy a great band!
I’m 64 and my first major concert was Jethro Tull in the early seventies (I saw many more.). You are right, there is nothing like being there. Thank you for your entertaining reactions.
ps: There is a bumper sticker that reads: “I may be old, but I got to see all the cool bands.” So true...
Glad you watched this live instead of listening to the album. I have seen them 11 times, the first being in 1971. No band is like them and remember this was from 1971. Tull was ahead of their time. All great musicians and very entertaining. They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It is a crime that they are not there yet.
As others have suggested .... THICK AS A BRICK, Live at Madison Square Garden ... amazing
Believe it not, Ian Anderson is also listed right up at the top among the wealthiest rock stars in the world. Now I'll give you Jethro Tull's front man isn't who you'd imagine being among rock's wealthiest, but he invested wisely and has made fortune off his salmon/fish farming business on the Isle of Skye in Scotland where it has grown and prospered for the last 20+ years. Today, Anderson's company, Strathaird, is the largest independent smoked salmon firm in the United Kingdom. He's made some big time $$$$ from using his music money to make that purchase years ago.
This was my very first concert in 1975 at The Forum in Los Angeles you're right you'll never forget once you see this band play you never forget it because you probably won't see a better one
One of the best concerts I ever seen.
Thick as a Brick - Live in Dinkelsbühl in 1986 (Also known as "Out in the Green"). Absolutely amazing.
Love the intro.i like his crazy.
Oh my Gents, Jethro Tull is such a unique band with the genius of Ian Anderson heading them up. I was lucky enough to see them live many, many years ago and it was an experience. If you like a little theater with your music try Meatloaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light live Dec. 77. Thanks for this.
Guys, you realize he's dressed like "Aqualung" on the album cover, right, not just some "homeless guy". LOL
"Pure class" - you've just described Ian Anderson and Tull's whole career! Check out the Hippodrome 1977 version of one of their most complex tracks: "Velvet Green". Not as much of a hard rock track as this one, but the intricacies of the piece make you wonder how they managed it live.
Love you guys! Your reactions to good music is the best!!
They are Electrical Bards from the 1500’s... look at Aqualung on the album cover! It’s a musical theme/show.
Martin Barre is a great guitarist and sadly underrated. If you really listen to some of his work you realize he had a classical background along with the Rock chops. The band was always so tight, but I don''t think any 2 shows were the same. They were very loose while being tight if that makes any sense.
Nice react guys , yes they are a fantastic band , and so much energy , first time i saw them live was , in Copenhagen Denmark , circusbuilding , good place to see these guys , it was circus and crazy😂never forget that concert 👍keep up the good work guys , Music are life
Great live performance by talented musicians. Ian was a performer and was fortunate to see them in concert in 1975 performing Aqualung. Thanks.
Saw Jethro tull many times over the years. Ian Anderson is a musical genius. Playing live tull are amazing
Live Jethro Tull is the best!! They were so great in concert. Thanks for the great reaction...*love your channel!!❤🤘
Ian Anderson is the ultimate performer. His mannerisms and
prolific talent make him one of the best in any genre. I saw them
here in San Diego at the stadium. They had a TULLEVISION on
the tour. Think he’s trippy? Try watching him on a gigantic screen!
Saw them live twice in the 80s, and if I had a time machine I'd go back and see them in the 60s and 70s. A band like no other - medieval prog?
They always seem to have so much fun and energy live!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Notice also how much faster they are playing the song live compared to studio version. And you are right, the best bands were always the ones that were even better live. I saw Jethro Tull twice. Got to touch his boot!!
Here in Montreal, we got those balloons they tossed into the audience, all the way up the sides of the arena, and then sent them straight across to the other side. And the whole time the light guys had spot lights on them, changing colours. It was great!!
You guys were really smiling and enjoying that one ! I was at their concert Passion Play and you are right - you don't forget it.
This is what folks my age (64) got to experience in the 70's. Incredible music live everywhere, all the time. I saw Tull 3 times...Aqualung, Think as a Brick and Passion Play tours. It was the best time in history for rock and roll.
I saw them live in the 70's and they are still one of my favorite groups
Awesome!!! Thank you!!! "They look like homeless people"!!! 😃😄🤣
Saw them twice live. Amazing and fantabulous
Excellent fellows my first taste of Jethro Tull was stand up
Ian Anderson: the only man to ever play rock & roll flute while standing on one leg!
It's great to see your appreciation of this singularly unique band. I've tried to include a couple of links for videos when they were younger, don't seem to be able to. Check out MY GOD live at the Isle of Wight 1970, it's mind blowing and from 1978 Thick as A Brick from Madison Square Garden...
i love Jethro... a hug from Brazil.
Ian continues playing the flute today, I Saw jethro Tull in Spain last winter. Amazing!!
Love you guys. I got see this band at least a dozen times Just No wo way to explain how great they were.
Thick as a Brick is a really long song of theirs but it is so good. Try it like the Locomotive Breath studio then live. It is good both ways )
Hey you two I saw them live 7 times including the 70s. You will never hear a better flute and more diverse band.
Saw them live in 70's and I have been a life long fan
I saw them twice live and they were brilliant each time, fabulous band, There was a funny story that Ian Anderson was once asked why he took up the flute, he replied that when he started in the industry he wanted to be the greatest guitar player of all time, then he heard Eric Clapton play and he switched to flute. Black Sunday is another great live song.
From a time when music was music!!!!!
Ian Anderson / Jethro Tull is insanely good in concert. We were very lucky, back in the 60’s and 70’s you either had the talent or you didn’t. There was no covering up bad.....we had so much talent back then.
Interaction is the key to having a successful fan base
I Saw them a couple of times back in the day and they always put on a great show!
One of the best live shows I've ever seen.
Flute magic!! It’s so Fire!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Saw them live under the stars at 'Fiddler's Green' in Denver, Colorado in 1993. It was awesome.
there's no bigger showman in rock n roll than Ian Anderson ... who else would think you could play a flute in a rock band and people would love it!!!
Bros, I’ve seen them 3 times in concert . . . AMAZING!!
You got it right, it was theatrical and done without overpowering the music/band. I saw them over 20 times and each tour had it's own "atmosphere". This was long before MTV and the only time you got to see a band was in concert so staging/theatre was as important as the music.
The name of the lead singer of Jethro Tull is Ian Anderson
Only rock star I ever met, was humble and gracious and so very down to earth. Bungle in the jungle next plz
Saw Full in 75 or76. Ian Anderson is so talented and theatrical in early concerts, very athletic.
Amazing showman and musician
Yeah, they play pretty good live, at least they did the 20+ times I saw them!
Live album "Bursting At The Seams" is a must. There is a flute solo that will blow you away. [ Pun definitely intended ] - What track ? Not telling. So now you will need to hear the whole concert .... & what a concert ! Superior live album & during there are some comical moments as Ian talks to the audience. The 1st song I ever heard by Jethro Tull was "Witches Promise" during the 70's on Top Of The Pops and bought the double vinyl album "Living In The Past" that same week. Boy you have some back catalogue to get through. Lol
Live performance=REAL
This was a great oldie but goodie👍👍👍👍👍👍. Thanks guys 💖💖
in this live performance, when the song ended they went straight into a medley of other Tull songs.
Black Sunday in particular
This song is part of the album called Aqualung. You really need to listen to the songs in order. They're all tied together. It's a fantastic album.
Thick as a Brick live from Madison Square Garden.
Ian Anderson - front man for Jethro Tull - famed for standing on one leg playing the flute! What a showman - pretty amazing. All of them were fab musicians. Great reaction guys - it's interesting hearing your opinions of this great band.
There was a time in the early 70's that Jethro Tull was a bigger live act than Led Zeppelin causing some tension between the bands.
