"pretty much impossible to spin the car on medium" yet when i got my first ever wheel even on medium I was all over the place coming out of corners lol
The thing is that assists allow you to drive right on the very limit of what the car can handle, without going over the limit. With no assists you need to, for example, balance your throttle around a corner to ensure you don’t spin out. But with assists it allows you to easily ride the line between fast and losing control. Ultimately, IRL, if F1 cars had ABS, TCS, and all the others they would definitely be faster. However, they are banned because it takes away from driver skill.

Good to see you back Limitless. I think in TT when viewing leader-boards you should be able to filter between drivers driving with, and without assists. Because then I will be able to see how I compare directly against other no assists drivers, which in turn is a true reflection of my driving ability.
The thing about assists is that they are designed to make you drive faster and more consistently. Without assists, if you make a mistake you will lose time, but with assists if you make a mistake the car may take care of it and you are less likely to lose any time. Traction control can essentially give you near perfect throttle control around corners. ABS literally gives you perfect braking control, it is physically and impossible to stop faster without ABS. Assists were banned in F1 because it took away from driver skill. The cars could be made faster if they were allowed to use them, but then the driver would be less important.
@@Sir_Budginton The thing is Assists don't exist in real life f1 so Codemasters can design them however they want. For a rewarding game they could make them slower than no assists and there would be no problem. They did it with the ABS too.

I've actually tested this on several tracks myself and TC always a second or more faster for the simple reason that you can lay on the power quicker out of corners. With no assists this is actually a skill you need to learn. I don't mind it in single player as this IS realistic after all but I feel once you move things over to a online competitive environment things need to be equal and/or assists needs to be punished otherwise it's not skill based and what's the point then as it's unfair and unbalanced.
This is my first time playing an F1 game (i play on a wheel). I run with medium traction control and ABS. I tried turning off either but i just dont have the motivation to teach myself how to drive without them. No assist should allways be faster.
Assists in real life and in "pro" sim racing games like iRacing, Assetto Corsa or RFactor will always make you go faster, it's a fact. That is why some categories ban traction control, abs, stability control and much more because it requires less skill from the driver. I bought this game like a week ago and the only assist i use is the racing line since i'm not too good at remembering all the braking zones or references of the tracks used in F1. ( I'm more of a GT Endurance type driver rather than Formula)
Why do Most people say that assists should be much slower than no assist. First of all AOR and the big ESport events are no assists anyway... No one cares about assists user there and second of all, If both people accelerate and brake the exact same way, they should be equally fast No Matter if medium traction or not... This will never happen anyway , because with medium traction und are always much earlier on the throttle and this should be thing that makes you slower. And this was what Made you slower in the Last game. Even though you could be 100% on the throttle very early, Your exit speed was horrible against non asist User.
i actually started my first session on f1 2018 with no traction control on the pad. actually feels fucking amazing. i need to get ontop of the gearing and the lines braking points and then i am all good
If you are just a casual player or a beginner you can drive faster with assists but if you are a pro you can always have the bests with no assists. Basically fastest possible you can get is when assists are turned off.
You can’t turn it of on the ranked server ! Most of the time, the first 3 players are using TC and ABS. ( just open telemetry and see their input on the brakes / throttle ) Most of the times, hammering the brakes and no lock up...
I would also take into consideration that you can abuse the setup much more as well compromise your traction because you don't need to worry about that aspect. It's the same with abs in the last game on PS4 learderboards anyway the top times were with abs because they could run like 90 brake pressure
Very disappointing to see again, but thanks for making this video. Keep in mind that JD never uses medium traction so he won't even be able to maximize its potential (no matter how good of a driver he is), somebody who has always used medium traction will be able to gain even more laptime.
Gives better field of view. Easier to see when to turn in. I play cockpit for immersion but it does feel like a handicap. COTA for me is a nightmare because I can’t see some corners due to changes in elevation and I have to really rely on my track knowledge to negotiate a corner.
Assists make the cars faster in real life so I think it's good that assists make the cars faster in game. There is a reason the FIA banned ABS and Traction Control. Its harder.
Pretty sure on Gran Turismo when you have TC on it automatically lifts off the throttle a tiny bit between gear changes and coming out of corners to make it slower, don"t see why F1 can't do the same...
They were for quite some time and assists shouldnt be in the top 20 either or anywhere close.. They do it to give the casual user more of a chance to start with trying to get people to play it. They will nerf it at somepoint.

May need to turn the ers down here and there depending on the track for qualifying
You say it's impossible to spin with medium TC try it on a game pad then you will change your mind i guarantee you it's so much easier with a wheel and pedal setup there is just too much to do with a pad while changing gear altering the ERS and trying to control wheel spin with the trigger while having clunky steering input there is no way you can be as smooth on a pad. I think you should have mentioned that.
Think anout controller users like its doable no assists on a controller but itss soo hard. They should find a good middle ground maybe add another like low and medium full and off. Gives the game more options
You say people who run with assists shouldn't be anywhere near those who don't run assists.. but if you want to be a casual player and want to play career mode on 110 AI, not being able to get lap times like those without assists would mean those who use assists cant play career mode on a higher difficulty. JD, can you do a video on controller gameplay in this year's game? I've been a pad player since F1 2010 as the wheel is something I can never afford, so I'd really love to hear your thoughts. :)
Tbh i still haven't purchased this yet altho I do plan to I was hoping that having no assists would be much quicker. Is it possible to do a controller versus steering wheel also as this was a problem in past f1 games.
Putting brake bias to the rear and reducing brake pressure will make the brakes lock less easily but you will have to pull the trigger further for the same amount of brake to be applied.
Im not saying that people who use assists should be matching those who don't but its a bit exaggerated too say they shouldn't be anywhere near those who don't. I do agree no assists should be faster but not over a second faster.
You do realize that it's not only the per lap pace, but moreover the added stability and thus reduced chance of spinning out? That's a huge deal in a sense of competitive advantage.
Max Pfeil esports is no assists anyways so to punish those who use assists in career mode or regular online lobbies isn’t fair, they got to balance assists and no assists, BUT YES I do agree no assists should be faster but not over a second faster.. that’s a little ridiculous not everyone has the time to grind the game 40 hours a week to be awesome at no assists like common now. All the people in the comments who run no assists trashing the fact that assists can match the times but the game isn’t released only for those who run no assists..
@@aDirewolfGaming Offline wll always have assisted. What they are crying about is online ranked because they need online play with no assisted. Press unranked ban assisted done. Its already a option
Assist should be of zero value to experienced drivers who know how to control the car. Assists are supposed to help newbie's who would normally not be able to complete a lap without spinning out.
Yeah, but in real life those driving aids are banned. They're added in the game because not all gamers are able to drive with no TCS, unlike IRL where some motorsports are allowed to have driving aids, and so the engineers utilise it to maximise performance. So ideally the game's TCS would be used as a crutch, artificially applying throttle modulation for the player but leaving space for improvement should the player decide to turn off the aid.
@@user-zv8qg1co4z technically having assists in the first place is unrealistic, because they are banned in F1. Also splitting up assists/no assists would split up the dwindling online player base making matches hard to find for no assists.
If they’ve made it so assists is quicker that’s bullshit. They shouldn’t be spoon fed lap time and learn to drive properly ffs. We should get the benefit as we don’t run assists 😓
It is really annoying to lose against the people who play with all the assists. Even a monkey could win eventually playing with assists. A true formula 1 car does not have ABS or TCM
TC is ALWAYS faster IRL. It doesn't completely cut power, it just cuts it enough to keep traction. Losing traction is much worse than cutting power, since if you lose traction, you're putting 0% of the engine power to the wheel instead of let's say 40% with TC. Also, cars that use TC in real life are designed around traction control. A Ferrari F2004 for example would be undrivable without TC; it would spin in every corner, since it actually doesn't have that much mechanical grip bc of the grooved tyres. You can try this out in Assetto Corsa for example. Same goes for LMP1 cars, GT3 cars, any racecars that have TC.
@@adamcurwen7220 yeah, but your car is not a racecar. TC works completely differently in a production road car compared to a racecar. Yours is designed for safety, so it slows you down, but a racecar's TC is designed to get optimal traction at all times. Optimal traction = faster speeds
Saying no assists must be faster is a bit elitist. Not everyone wants to put time into getting good at not using them. Lots of people just want to jump in an online lobby and be competitive regardless of what assists they use
Much of the skill in real racing is when you brake, and how fast you can go round corners without sliding off the track. If you want assists that let you do those things perfectly, you are asking for a ridiculous advantage over the average non-assist player. If you merely want assists that are as good as the average non-assist player, which is more reasonable, you must concede that good players will be better without assist.
@@BaddeJimme fair point. I haven't been using assists on this game, I forced myself not to. I was just making that point because in the past 8t was frustrating being slower by default because you use assists and not being good enough without them to keep it on the track and still be quick

Get over it how can be disappointed if assists = same times? it levels playing field. Ive raced for years REAL LIFE unlike 95% gamers like you and assists mean my kids can race with me..... Seriously you would be faster/better if you didn't bounce off rev limiter each gear change.
I've actually raced for 12 years IRL, so don't jump to conclusions. No assists should be harder, but be rewarded with more speed if you can control it. Also revving off gears doesn't cost me time or hinder me, it's just my driving style and it's been proven it makes no difference.
Let's be honest, there shouldn't be any assists in the game nor racing line. You can't deal with it?well then go and play forza horizon or learn how to play without any fking assists.
Yes, driving with no assists should always be faster than driving with assists. But you will have to play a sim game like iRacing to get "rewarded" and not an arcade game.
assists are faster in real life too though for example ABS lets you brake into a corner, without ABS you have to brake before the corner. A major advantage to use ABS due to this with any closed wheel car like GT3 on nordschleife and so on.
It is much easier to deal with no assists on a wheel. On a gamepad on the other hand? Very difficult.

You say assists are faster yet all the fastest times on the leaderboards are no assists...
I myself use assists but now I started racing with assists off but I’m about 4 seconds slower then when I had assists. Any advice????
Use assists
JD, can you do a video on controller gameplay in this year's game? I've been a pad player since F1 2010 as the wheel is something I can never afford, so I'd really love to hear your thoughts. :)
TC is for pad users. Now all they need to is add a search pad or wheel
Tbh i still haven't purchased this yet altho I do plan to I was hoping that having no assists would be much quicker. Is it possible to do a controller versus steering wheel also as this was a problem in past f1 games.
if I were you I would not worry about assists while your still learning and driving in kiddie view.
I can't play without anti-lock brakes with gamepad. Can you give me some advice how I can play with closing anti-lock brakes?
In online lobies whit clasification the assists will be turned off...
Medium TC last gamewas slow AF compared to no TC so I’m assuming they’ll patch it so it’s similar to last game
Matt Tibos not really slow af.. I have multiple top 100 times with med tc on tt (pc). It was actually too op
Hi Sweat 👋🏻😂😂😂
It was OP at the start, but patched afterwards to be slower. No idea why this is happening in F1 2018, it should continue to be slower.
Lasher I’m a few tenths faster without tc now as it should be, but I still think it’s too powerful tbh. They should be at least a second off
ScubaMUFC United 👀👌
Does F1 have daily races like GT Sport or is online racing just lobbies?
just lobbies
Assist should be of zero value to experienced drivers who know how to control the car. Assists are supposed to help newbie's who would normally not be able to complete a lap without spinning out.
why did you stop doing the setups????
I use assists but i shift up manually so i can get through the gears quicker tbh i cant be asked to manually downshift argh
People should be quicker by using no assists and not by letting the game doing most of the work for them
Yoh jd is a g29 a good steering weel for fi 2018?
For me it's pretty logical assists are faster. Ever seen a car with no assists being quicker in real life than a car without them? I haven't ;)
If you're basing the game off of real life then assists should banned in the game as well. Problem solved.
@@FirstLast-ur6xt Play unranked and ban the assists instead of whinging.
Poggers for assist players :D
They are trying to approximate the game to a simulator... And you want assists to be slower. Just fucking think
What if abs users use like 100% brake pressure
works ^^
For me a pad player from what I have heard the fastest is medium traction
Assists for pad players
No assists for Wheels
I play CONTROLLER NOT A PAD with no assists and it is easy af
Has this been fixed yet?
The way tcs works is it cuts the power to the wheels to stop you losing traction so i dont understand how you can be faster with it on.
In real life my car is much faster with traction control off, traction control just cuts the power and holds the car back.
@@adamcurwen7220 yeah, but your car is not a racecar. TC works completely differently in a production road car compared to a racecar. Yours is designed for safety, so it slows you down, but a racecar's TC is designed to get optimal traction at all times. Optimal traction = faster speeds
Redstarka22 I see i see,
Trazada ABS y tracción media wachin
You should have put Lewis in the wall and then cried to make it realistic :p
Nice
Ive been playing 8 months. I run no assists and never have. Im up 85-90 AI. Im chuffed as fuck ha xD
This is why I don't play f1 anymore.
What a shame !!!! Training hours to play no assist.
Do you give online lessons if i pay to you?
yo i play with assists and im so fucking fast
Do u trailbreak
Who doesn't trail break lol
Depends on the corner, in first turn you have to do that for example.
Saying no assists must be faster is a bit elitist. Not everyone wants to put time into getting good at not using them. Lots of people just want to jump in an online lobby and be competitive regardless of what assists they use
It's really not that hard and there should be a reward for going the extra mile.
Medium TCS should be slower by a smidge at least, to compensate for player using no TCS at risk of spinning out completely.
I'm pissed. Real talk every1 who drives no assists. Hurt me see medium traction but I put to maself or pedals really the input. Hopefully race trl soon I just got bk onit after f1 2012. Only know suzuka budapest so add lettz_g29. Ain bin online really try learn tracks again
Well obviously no assists is quicker as per usual
Yh they should patch it do that no TC is quicker
Yes, driving with no assists should always be faster than driving with assists. But you will have to play a sim game like iRacing to get "rewarded" and not an arcade game.
assists are faster in real life too though
for example ABS lets you brake into a corner, without ABS you have to brake before the corner. A major advantage to use ABS due to this with any closed wheel car like GT3 on nordschleife and so on.
this is game not realistic at all, how total amateurs could beat hamilton best times? the car setups are bugged for sure to say the least
Honestly I have zero interest in buying the game now lol.. rip
