A small detail that I don't think anyone's noted here yet: when Clarissa/Melba shuts down the power, she does so using a method shown to her by the older mechanic that she murdered in episode 7. That guy being nice and willing to teach her gave her the knowledge she needed to shut down the Behemoth. It's a great little callback that easily flies under the radar, and one of a million examples of this show paying attention to detail and providing setup for later events.

    • @BipolarBLKSheep

    • @pali1d

@Darkstar True, though it's entirely possible to teach without being nice, and he chose to be nice while teaching. Her killing a man who was nothing but nice to her was the first chink in her emotional armor, the first thing she felt guilty for doing, which opened the doorway for her eventual redemption.

I think the reason I love Ashford so much is because his actions this episode aren't that of some one dimensional villain, he's doing what he can with the concrete information he has and not trusting in someone who, in his mind, is untrustworthy. He has no demonstrable proof that all the crazy shit that Holden is saying is true, and doesn't feel that he can act on it. He's incredibly stubborn its true, but that only endears him to me!

JP Mao is the closest the show has come to having an actual "bad guy"(and you could debate the case for Mao as well) and i love it for that.

*Just in case they read this:* It's information from the books but wasn't made clear in the show (at least I don't recall). Putting aside the proto-molecule in Sol system came billions of years ago and therefore have limited information about what happen. The rings space system has no idea what happened either. The Visions shows that the proto-molecule civilization starts dying suddenly, systems by systems, slowly but surely. And the system has no idea what is going on, it tried everything. Including destroying systems by nova. Nothing worked, so in the end the system decide to shut down everything and when into siege mod, hoping whatever is happening stops. It is waiting for the all clear from the rest of the civilization which never came. Billions of years later the Earth side established contact and give the system a chance to reset or lift the security protocol. But it is still in siege mod, so every perceive attack by humans are met with increasing security response. It isn't a 'test' so much as for the system to reset, it has to determine there is no longer any threat.

And it's still trying to figure out what happened, waiting for the all clear to lift the quarantine. Hence the Investigator, reaching out one hundred and thirteen times a second, yet nothing answers and it still reaches out. Miller saying he needs a ride forshadows that the nucleus wants to send out the Investigator to one of the systems (Ilus), to try to find out how it died. What Holden saw in the Ring gate wasn't protomolecule, it was something else.
Spoiler: The investigator wouldn't have found out without human eyes SEEING it.

During Seasons 1-3, the seasons didn't correspond directly with the books. Book 1 (Leviathan Wakes) ends in S2E05 "Home," Book 2 (Caliban's War) ends in S3E06 "Immolation," and Book 3 (Abaddon's Gate) ends in S3E13 "Abaddon's Gate."
That's why the S3 finale is the first one that actually feels like a finale--the book ends there. However, from this point forward, each season represents one book, so each finale will feel similar to this finale. Season 4 covers Book 4 (Cibola Burn), Season 5 covers Book 5 (Nemesis Games), and the upcoming Season 6 will cover Book 6 (Babylon's Ashes).

Remember how the protomolecule doesn't activate unless it finds life to steal from, on an inert uninhabitable planet it stays inert. If you conclude that every ring had life that it found to activate the ring then you must also conclude that every ring has leads to a system that has life therefore to one degree or another must be habitable - doesn't necessarily mean habitable for humans, although it may be possible the are ground rules for what is actually habitable. At some stage, there was life on the other side. Some of it was a threat and those rings aren't accessible.
This episode is amazing, the bit at the end still gives me goosebumps, and there's so much potential there. It was also where we would have ended if it wasn't for the community and Jeff Bezos being somewhat of a fan of the books (and presumably the show). Remember, the protomolecule needs biomass in order to build a ring. That makes every system with a ring a habitable one by definition. Now, that means habitable for some form of life, not necessarily human life. And the rings are billions of years old. Maybe something cataclysmic happened in the meantime and viability for life is gone now.
But you can assume that the majority of those systems still has something useful for humans to find.

So, now a lot of what they set up back in Season 1 comes to fruition.
To connect the different solar systems across such vast distances, the ring-space cannot exist in normal space-time.
It has to be a little, "pocket-universe" of its own.
For the proto-molecule ring-builder system to work, it must be able to connect to the ring-space station.
That means the proto-molecule does not perceive time as *linear*, since it's in communication with something that exists outside of linear space-time.
Ergo, the reason the proto-molecule used the bird in the first season, was because it knew the bird had emotional significance to Miller.
When Julie Mao saw Miller with the hat and the bird at the end of her life, she perceived Miller not as he was when he found her body, but as he perceived himself in his own mind.
That's because the proto-molecule had access to Miller's mind, even though it hadn't "yet" assimilated him into its gestalt.
Moreover, it used those assets, as needed, to accomplish its goals.
When Miller found "Seed-Crystal Julie," she said he belonged with her.
That had a romantic interpretation, and that's how the actors played it, and it kind of worked because Seed-Crystal Julie already had intimate knowledge of Miller's mind.
However, because it made use of Miller's experiences, it *had* to assimilate him, at that point, to avoid temporal paradox.
Miller, quite literally, *belonged* with the proto-molecule gestalt.
After that, the gestalt needed to investigate what happened to its creators, and humans were a potentially useful means by which it could do so.
So, it used Miller's absorbed consciousness to create, "The Investigator," to have a way to interface with humanity, by way of tinkering with Holden's mind.
Once humanity proved itself capable of acting in an non-threatening way, the station opened the ring-gates so humanity had a way to further its investigation.
And, now we see the overarching story of this series -- the transition of humanity from confinement in a single Solar System, to an interstellar civilization.
That's one of *the hardest* storylines to pull off, and most space science-fiction authors never even try.
Usually, they set something in near-future space, or they set a story well after humanity has achieved interstellar travel, but they tend to avoid the complex story about the shift -- and all the mad repercussions and profound changes such a transition would initiate.
Remember, this was the last episode for SyFy; the network cancelled the show, after this.
So, this was meant to put a decent wrap on the whole series.
After this was shot, Amazon Prime picked up the show for three more seasons, but SyFy got a nice wrap.
Good stuff gentlemen, although I could've done without the three-legged race stuff. :)

The storyline, the acting, the post-production of this series, has made this show my all time number one series. In my opinion this series sorta makes up for Firefly getting canceled so quickly, in that this show would have been done here, if not for Amazon picking it up. The storyline and acting in Firefly would have been this good, in my opinion. This ends the first trilogy. So season 4, steps back the pace, to set up for the next trilogy. My interpretation of it was that this civilization shot out protocmolecule randomly all over the galaxy. If the protomolecule encountered mass from planets/biologics it could utilize it would harvest it and build a ring. That ring would lead just to the station. The station would analyze the other side and assess threat. If it assessed no threat then it would open that gate up to the rest of the network so that the civilization could go there and colonize. If it did detect a threat rather than open up to the full network it would power up and destroy the sun in that system to basically cauterize the threat. It was a fully automated process designed to spread the civilization through a jump-gate network and colonization while minimizing possible blowback from opening a gate to a dangerous area that could reverse-invade them.
