Thoda Dance: A movement saves tribal dance | हाटी समुदाय का ठोडा नाच कैसे बचेगा

The communities of trans giri area of Himachal Pradesh are known as Hatti. This area has a very distinct culture and life style. Among many forms of dances the Thoda dance is very unique and ancient folk dance of this area. There is a myth that this dance belong to the Mahabharata era.

Hi, I belong to Trans Giri area and it's really great and proud to see our culture and tradition getting a bit recognition. And really happy to see my maternal uncles in the documentary. This is the sport (THODA) or dance that is the main attraction of fairs in our area (Known as BISHOO Mela) and is played by RAJPUTS (as Rajputs were the ones to take part in wars in older times). And the growth of THODA can be traced in a V shaped-graph. Yes it is true it looked like this will end soon but young men (our new generation) have shown so much interest in this and we really are passionate and enthusiastic about it and perform it proudly. So, it has once again started growing and gaining popularity. The environment and intensity of THODA in a BISHOO Mela is really great and it will surely give you goosebumps. This can be seen in Shimla , Sirmaur and parts of Solan. This is played between Shathi and Pashi groups which are the reference to Mahabharata era. Shathi and Pashi groups play against each other . As a result of it's growth, a successful THODA event (a tournament) was recently organised in DAHR NALA, Deha, Distt. Shimla in which 50 teams took part. We wish the growth remains constant and our tradition not only remain safe and away from being vanished but also spread to other parts of Himachal Pradesh and our country. Really liked the efforts of MAIN BHI BHARAT who made such a beautiful documentary showing our tradition in a beautiful way.

Great documentary, thanks for making this. Thoda is also played in Shimla and parts of Solan districts. Its popular belief that game is played by Rajputs, i think this needs further research. Basically people belong to Khash community but overtime Khash and Rajput terms are used interchangeably. I think Khash and Kanait are more appropriate terms.
