- More grainy VHS type footage from the mid to late 80's complete with gift wrapping and excitement for the upcoming holidays!
And with Christmas 1987 just around the corner...
😊
This now defunct local Marshal Fields store in Chicago later became another Macy's..
Not much going on here, just customers walking about and shopping for the upcoming holiday season for around 4 to 5 minutes.

Loved the 80s. No phones, no selfies, people using cash!!! bliss.
The constant tapping of cash register keys.
Especially no social media . No cameras to take pics of random people
It dont matter@@ravishing-troop5276
Those manual credit card sliding thingies! 🤣
No immigrants.
What I love about this channel is that these aren't "reaction" videos; there's no music, no commentary. You can simply enjoy each video for what it is. VHS recordings like this one are as close as we can get to a portal back to this time and place. For a few wonderful minutes, I'm back.
this channel is the reason i upload my childhood VHS tapes in their pure, unaltered form. Its better that way.
Exactly, no egos here. Just normal people
yeah, one of the few channels that shows the past and doesn’t put that annoying sad tik tok music blasting
Yes agree
These videos are from a online database anyone can access!! It’s actually theft
The Malls at Christmas were decorated so beautifully. Another lost treasure in our new high tech, shop online world.
Shopping centres. Are you American?
Yes and you know it’s never too late to actually put your phone away and get out to see what it’s like
You’re apart of that. Don’t act like you go to the malls😂
@@daytonsouthall1137 I do go to what's left of our mall
@@killua_7787 I don't have a smart phone. I physically shop for most items.
All these people probably thought this person was so silly for filming just regular scenes around the mall, but how precious these videos became.
Not really, it was actually very common!. When my dad got a recorder in the early 90s we wouldn't stop recording every nonsense, every walk during vacation time, stores, the beach, being silly. While not the same as today (as today is instant, no need to wait to see your pictures or redo them), we loved taking photos of ourselves too, friends doing silly things and family ofc. If you could afford rolls, tapes and developing them, then you could be all day just doing it for fun!.
Like time capsules
There is always a pang of sadness when I watch these videos. Nostalgia at its finest…
Same!
Love your username lol
@ Giddy up!
You can't go home again.
I know exactly what you mean 😢
The store clerks were so professional. Top notch customer service that is surely missed in retail now.
Actually, they could be helpful to the point of being annoying because they were working on commission in a lot of cases. I used to dread going to the makeup counter with my mom because we'd be there for 2 hours. Xmas shopping used to be a major event that was tedious, to say the least. Now it is a one-click proposition.
You can’t even get help finding what you need, nobody wants to help you now .they just tell you it’s over their. Miss the professional Customer service stores used to have.
@@Lurch-Bot Yep. You're so right. I sold shoes and I hated how they pressured us to push the sundries on people or try to sell them handbags or extra pairs of shoes. I was one of the least pushy sales people you could have ever met.
@@AJ-tp9bk
When my Mom would go into any department stores shopping for our clothes she'd tell the first salesperson that accosted her LoL that she would promise to find them when she's ready to buy so they get the commission & please leave us alone while browsing because we don't want your help😆
Win win situation for the salesperson & my Mom 😅👌🏼
Had you waited on my Mom she would have looked for you every time she went into your store🤍
She couldn't stand pushy salespeople. One time she was in a shoe store & the salesman wouldn't leave her alone. She said: I could write a check right now for every pair of shoes in this store ( which was true she was a wealthy shop acholic) , but since you refuse to leave me alone I would never buy one pair from you or ever come back to this store & then we walked out😅
@@Lurch-Bot Walking through the perfume section was a minefield
The glory days when you could get gift boxes - even get it wrapped - and paper shopping bags.
You would get REAL boxes too. Not the foldable ones that were junk. Real cardboard boxes that held up and could be used again. I still have one!!
@aruglaempire2518 I still have one, too. From Jordan Marsh.
I would pay almost anything for this service if it was still available.
It’s beautiful to see that people actually cared about dressing nicely when going shopping and waiting patiently to be served. I really miss that.
Mostly the left-over generation from before hippies. Silent Gen and elder expected that. And likely expected from their offspring although they had less control over that. As a witness, it was already going to the dregs. It’s just we had better stores, real department stores rather than Wal-Mart and Costco lame faux “department stores”. The big-box stores made it even more acceptable to dress lousy.
I thought the world would be like this forever. It wasn't ☹️
If I could quote a famous socialite of the 1980s:
"Life moves pretty fast, If you don't stop and look around once and a while, you could miss it."

All the shoulder pads, fur coats, people dressed up to go to the mall back then. It was loud and busy. Now the halls are quiet even at at christmas time. What a fun time the 80's were!
Depends on where you live, over here in Canada malls are still extremely packed like this.
It's a very cold feeling now.
Not a pair of sweats or pajamas pants anywhere in sight. That's a sign of a bygone era, when ppl actually got dressed before they left the house 🏠
@@KittiesGaloreStarted slowly going downhill somewhere in the later 90's
I still get dressed before leaving the house.
And the best bit about this video, children behaving themselves looking forward to Christmas and no zombie kids on their phones trying to get the best selfies. Everyone dressed nicely, with no gym gear or hoodies. I think respect has vanished now. I miss those times.
I worked for Marshall Fields in high school and college. They were good to their employees and we were expected to dress properly for work. It was an upscale store with loyal customers. Some departments went away over time…haberdashery, fur department, a wig department and beautiful jewelry. The window dressers were designers who had highly coveted jobs…so many fun memories. They gave us a special 33% discount for friends and family members during the holidays.
Me too and gosh it was a wonderful time! Miss Fields so much!
Yes! I worked for Neiman Marcus design High School and wanted the coveted job of window and display designer!
Notice the young woman can count change back?
And the feminine dressing?
So nice 💝
This is EXACTLY how I remember it. Stores and malls crowded. People well dressed with no one looking like slobs. Friendly and helpful sales clerks. Folks being respectful and friendly in general. Just a general feeling of festiveness.
This was the year I graduated college and I went all out buying gifts for my mother, aunt, grandmother, etc. because I had my first professional job. What a Christmas it was that year. They're all gone now and I'm all alone as I'm an only child and a bachelor. But I have such fond memories of those days!
You deserve a like and a love. I know what you're feeling.
I was born in '84. The 80s were a great time. The music was amazing too. I am also an only child and a bachelorette lol My Grandmothers have passed away but still blessed to have my parents. I get my pictures taken with Santa out every year as it brings me back to a magical time of the 80s.
@retroguy9494.... I feel you. I'm 52 now and nothing is enjoyable anymore. I yearn for times like these again, but I know they'll never come back.
What a great time to be a kid. Christmas time was purely magical. This is pure heaven here!
Me and my wife met Sept 1987..this is what it was like that christmas for us. At the time I thought we were high tech in tech in clothing you name it. Looking back though sometimes the world seems so primative. These are great to look back on the times of me and my wife's life. I lost her 6 years ago so these are bittersweet.
I’m so sorry for your loss 😢💔. I didn’t meet my husband until later in life, but I lost him too soon as well. 😔💔 I’m so glad that these videos can keep those special moments alive for you. 🦋
I grew up in Chicago and I was scanning the crowd to see if I knew anyone or if my late aunts were shopping there since they loved Fields. Oh how I wish I could climb into that video! No one looking at phones, just enjoying Christmas shopping.
Stop living in the past. It's very unhealthy, it holds people back and prevents them from living in the now to make the future a better place.
My second job was at JCPenney in 1987, and I loved it. 20% sales discount for employees and 40% discount at Christmas. I worked in the catalog department and spent many hours flipping through the catalog. And oh, that Christmas catalog. Miss those days.
I loved Penneys then.❤
I miss the Penney's and Sears Christmas catalogs. A large part of my family's Christmas always came from those.
I worked at Penny's in the late 90's. Still remember that huge catalog they had and how it was such a big deal
@jardindelsoul And the gift wrapping section was near where the catalog pickup was-- at least in the Pennys in my town. Miss both.
@SherryHill-k5y that's how it was in our store too, but we were also encouraged to sell those bulky catalogs at the register for $5.. I remember how the managers would make a big deal over those catalogs..
I remember Christmas shopping with my mom in 1987. I was 6 years old and didn't have a care in the world. Little did I know back then that those days would be far gone today, only to be remembered in memory or on video and in pictures.
My mom let me get Metroid for good behavior when Xmas shopping and because it was about 18 months old at the time and on sale. And then I almost never played it because my dad got into it and hogged the NES for about 6 months.
Everything was plentiful and everyone was dressed up! I was a high school junior during Christmas 1987…actually thought these days would last forever.😢
Haha I was a Junior also then. What a great time to grow up!
I was a Freshsman . . .I crushed on the older girls 😅
I was 15 then and the mall was a magical place where you could hang out with your friends, eat not yet poisoned food at the food court, get an Orange Julius and then catch a movie. Man I miss this.

I was 8 years old. I remember the outfits and the hair, the crowds in the stores. But mostly, I remember the excitement and warmth of being a child in an analog Christmas season. (We didn't have much, but my parents made sure Christmas was fun.) I've spent every Christmas trying to recapture that feeling.

Oh the nostalgia! I can close my eyes and remember it well! People were friendlier I remember people talked to each other more and were much less brash.
What a classier shopping experience. The dark green bag to hide the gift for when you bring it home.
These videos make me so nostalgic but sad.

That mall looked STUNNING. The white columns were fantastic already, then with holly, lights, and decorations it was a holiday wonderland.
It's not a mall. It's the biggest department store in downtown Chicago and it still exists.
It was Marshall Field's on State Street. now it's a Macy's. 😑
@@Davey7358sad to hear it is now a Macy’s but glad it is still open at all!
The golden age of department store shopping. It was wonderful. Even if you couldn't afford anything, you would just go to walk around and take in all of the sights. I miss this time and era, don't know if it will eve return. Everyone was happy. Seriously, sounds odd but everyone was happy to be walking around.
Ignorance is bliss.
Look at how decked out the malls were! Nowadays everything is so bare and bland, even at Christmastime. I love how dressed up everyone is too, which you also don't see nowadays. There's a special holiday feeling I'm getting from this video I don't know how to describe, it's like you can feel it radiating from the people and the building. Is that what Christmas felt like back then, I wonder? I wish I could step into this video and just be there if only for a few minutes. Christmas has changed so much, even from when I was a kid. It's like people aren't in the spirit anymore and they don't put effort into anything. I wish the malls and massive Christmas decor would make a comeback. I feel like there was something truly magical about Christmas back then.
There was, and this video captures exactly how it felt, minus the wonderful mall food court smells!!
Yes, it definitely felt magical back then!
That feeling you're getting is 100% spot-on. It really did feel different, and I don't think it was just because of my age. (I was 8 at Christmas 1987.)
Christmas was magical because we were kids back then when you become an adult, the fun goes away no matter what decade it is
Department stores had real decorations and put in the effort to make every inch of the store look great. Today you see cheap carboard signs hanging from the ceiling.
Wow! No one is shopping in pajamas 😂
My favorite part of these videos is seeing how healthy sized a lot of mothers were, dressed up nicely, heals click-clacking on the floors, the sounds of their paper bags as they walk.
@rickyhank118 I know. Such a beautiful time. ♡
I loved the clicking of the shoes too!
I was just gonna say that. We were dressed Not like the girls today going out in their pjs. Ugh 😣
Life was great back then. By age 17 it was the 80's a great decade were everything seemed plentiful at least in the west. I worked in retail at T. Eaton Company here in Canada near Toronto. I loved it and though busy loved Christmas for the the nearly 4years I worked there. Back then I never realized the world is so sinister as it's becoming apparent in 2024.Thanks for uploading this gem.

I was 15 in ‘87. Adored Christmas shopping at the mall…and also downtown shopping at the old beautiful department stores with phenomenal architecture and decorative window scenes. Ahhhhhh
I knew immediately that was Marshall Field's...my dad sold them their shopping bags for decades.
Life was good back then. I thought it would get better. I was sure wrong.
Agree.
I was 17 and we lived at the mall! those were the days. All my friends worked at different stores so we would go visit each other on our breaks. no texting. physically going to see the person. loved it. miss it.
and thanks to whoever did this- especially for the close up on the cash register omg!😅
What a weird thing to do in 87...just randomly recording on a giant SVHS camera...thank goodness you did
My hometown, Chi-town! I was born in 88’ so this was literally just a few months before that. This is how Christmas should still be just everything looked different back then. Even in the 90s and early 2000’s Christmas time still felt more special. Nowadays you would be hard pressed to not walk in a mall or department store and not find half or more of the people with their heads buried in their phones. We need these times back man!
Back in those days, me and my family would go out every weekend to one of the local malls and spend the whole day there. Not even really buying anything, but just looking at the decorations, eating, and people watching.Though most of my family passed by the early 2000s, I kept the tradition alive. It was always so crowded and exciting back then. Now the malls are empty and the excitement isn't the same.
Unfortunately you're right I was born in 80
I’m an 80s kid, and Christmas time was truly the best during that era, especially as a young teen. Going to the mall and Christmas shopping with your parents and family was such a wonderful experience. Winters in Indiana were so cold and snowy, which added to that Christmassy feeling. I will never forget those special times. Pure Nostalgia. Sadly, kids today have no idea how magical this time of year was back then. BTW, Merry Christmas everyone.🎄

Back when people still dressed well.
It was nice when people "dressed up" just to go walk around the mall or go to the grocery store. People can wear what they want, but seeing so many people walking around stores wearing pajamas just makes me think they're lazy. The only time I eve wore pajamas to go somewhere was when I was out of clean clothes and I was going to the laundromat, and it still felt weird to be wearing pajamas outside of the house lol.
That was fun. I was in college in ‘87. Now I get most things from Amazon. Sad, but true.
Christmas so special in 80s i was 10 years old in 1987
It's nice to see how well people presented themselves when shopping. Whether they dressed up all the way or just put on a pair of jeans and a shirt, everyone still looked quite neat and clean.
gift wrapping on the spot was amazing.. but even more weird and amazing where our malls had gift wrapping areas with a long table. I watched my mom pay a few dollar to have the gifts she just bought wrapped at these stations, as a kid i thought the whole thing was weird but now its magical to me.
Was in my early 20's then. Really remember these days and miss them.
Its hard to watch because its like touching a time you can never go back to.😢❤
No smart phones! No selfies no stupidity.
It's amazing to see not 1 person walking around in their pj bottoms and dirty house slippers
I remember when I went back to school as a nontrad in 2003 and college freshmen were showing up to class in their pajamas. I feel like that's where it all started because it was the first time I saw it. I was shocked! Kids just showing up like the classroom was their living room. I get that it's comfortable, but it felt so disrespectful. But now my life is such that wearing jeans feels like dressing up because I'm always wearing leggings around the house. It's interesting how fashion slides.
I hate what the internet has done to our world.

I am so glad this popped up on my feed and that I clicked on it and watched. I was pretty sure that the escalator was from Marshall Fields and the minute they started the video , I knew it was. My mother-in-law worked in the cosmetic department and I watched with eagle eyes, wondering if I would see her, but unfortunately no. She was a wonderful lady. Loved by all who worked with her and her friends. When I was first married and hadn’t gotten a job yet, I spent many days wandering around fields. Then I would go home with my mother-in-law and my husband would meet us there for dinner. Thanks for the memories
