Not really, it was actually very common!. When my dad got a recorder in the early 90s we wouldn't stop recording every nonsense, every walk during vacation time, stores, the beach, being silly. While not the same as today (as today is instant, no need to wait to see your pictures or redo them), we loved taking photos of ourselves too, friends doing silly things and family ofc. Back when shopping was an experience. I went to MF during the Christmas holidays in 1988 and 89. Parents lived in Arlington Heights. Took the train in and did a bit of last minute shopping. Was such an incredible time to be alive and be a part of the amazing city of Chicago. Thank you so much for the visual memory. I love your channel. Especially when you post from the 80s.
The golden age of department store shopping. It was wonderful. Even if you couldn't afford anything, you would just go to walk around and take in all of the sights. I miss this time and era, don't know if it will eve return. Everyone was happy. Seriously, sounds odd but everyone was happy to be walking around.
Except at 0:57 a woman wearing a blue jacket walked into 2 people and never even bothered to say "sorry" or anything. I suppose there has always been some people like that at every point in time.
Oh, don't you worry. There were plenty of savage fuck ups and troublemakers in 1987. Don't let nostalgia get the better of your critical thinking skills.
@@ScottTeresi True. Some people were always jerks. However, speaking generally on that issue of interpersonal behavior, it was better for the average person in 60's-80's. It used to be much different in Poland at that time, what we can see in this video was like a fairytale. Now it’s pretty much the same everywhere, many people don’t even physicaly go shopping and use the internet instead. The video is beautiful, it makes me nostalgic about things I didn’t even experience. It still reminds me of a dream.
gift wrapping on the spot was amazing.. but even more weird and amazing where our malls had gift wrapping areas with a long table. I watched my mom pay a few dollar to have the gifts she just bought wrapped at these stations, as a kid i thought the whole thing was weird but now its magical to me.
Lol, I remember that too when you were never, ever to wear pajamas anywhere in public no ifs, ands, or buts! I also remember too that the stores and businesses seemed to always have "no shirt, no shoes, no service" signs as well. I always wondered as a kid if there was ever an issue with that (people bare foot or shirtless)? Maybe there were lots of hippies that did that in the 60s/70s? I am a kid of the 80s/90s so I didn't understand where the origins of that came from...although I do remember men going shirtless a lot more back then in the heat.
I was 11 in 1987. I thought these times would never end. I loved going to the mall at Christmas time! Now they are empty. I wonder if this mall is even still open 😢
Wow! What a flashback 🤠👍🏻. In 1987 my wife and I shopped with our four year old daughter and two year old son (Mom had number three ready to go January 5th) at our closest mall, The Lincoln Mall in Matteson Illinois. Shopping in the mall back then was quite nice. Everything was always decorated so nicely for the Christmas Holiday. But malls are quickly becoming abandoned throughout the country and many aren't safe like they used to be. You wouldn't catch me in the one near me now, The Southlake Mall in Merrillville/Hobart Indiana. Last time there, there was a shoot out between criminals and the police. One of the thugs died in the shootout. Very sad indeed. Thanks for a warm and fuzzy memory 🤠👍🏻
Loadin' up on the goods! Ahhh, back in the good old days, the mega-materialism 80's! I used to work in a mall '85 to '92. Used to sell shoes. Remember when they actually had shoe sales people? 😂 it was always so packed & hectic at the Holidays. This really does get me feeling nostalgic, although I hated the retail work back then!
People still shop that way in the Philippines, Thailand, Japan & South Korea. Huge beautiful malls, crowds of people everyday and everywhere. A sight to behold and a wonderful shopping experience every time I visit these countries. Can’t say I’ve seen this type of crowds in US malls, not even in Las Vegas. Oh well.
I was 9 in 1987 and my childhood sucked so I really didn't get to enjoy the world the way you see it in this video. It makes the feeling of nostalgia for this time period hit that much harder.
I didn't have a good childhood either, so I don't miss the time period either like others seem to. I also have a very detailed memory too and remember both the good and bad aspects in society overall, and I think a lot of folks forget the good stuff we have today and all the different issues back then.
I was only 5 in '87. But i still remember the good times during the late 80s and early 90s. Not perfect but life did feel different back then, not just because i was a kid. Now I'm in my 40s. Lost loved ones over the years. Wish i could go back for a few minutes. Especially during the holidays 😢
The 1980’s and the 1990’s were two of the best decades ever we still had just enough technology but weren’t tethered to the internet yet people were much happier back then without the social media destroying the society in general now it’s full of self centered narcissists.
Sad thing is….I could’ve been in this video, reminded me so much of growing up in the 80’s. Marshall Fields was a solid part of my life growing up, and my high school would do a shopping day to Chicago at Christmas.
@@milfordcivic6755 I genuinely NEVER saw people wearing pajamas out in public until some years after the 2008 crash/great recession. I think what started the gradual shift was the early 00s when those awful matching velour stretch /jersey knit hoodie and lounge/exercise sets became stylish. Once we started wearing the wide legged lounge/yoga pants then it seems like within 10-15yrs of this happening eventually the PJ bottoms in public became a thing. Probably the closest thing you ever saw to PJs out in public before the 2000s were older women in public in big mumu house dress type things.
@@jercasgav Spot on. You're correct that pajama-bottoms became popular streetwear by 2008. That was when Perez Hilton released his Emo clothing line to Hot Topic and the pajamas were a popular item. Pajama-bottoms are a modern-day equivalent of plaid pants. Actually, though, the closest thing to PJs we wore in public in the 90's was sweatsuits by brands like Russell. Ironically, sweatpants are now a part of school uniforms these days instead of khakis & dress pants. Even in some Catholic Schools. As a Millennial, I find that shocking. As kids, we used to wear khakis & polos casually like the Cholos.
The smart shoppers back then took all their treasures down to the gift wrapping department and have it delivered! Marshall fields was great at doing that!! It cost a few bucks more, but it was worth it!!
I grew up in a small town and only ever went shopping malls to make purchases. Seeing a city department store like Marshall Field's when I was in my 20s was such a unique experience. Those flagship stores just had a different feel.
The "glory days" for me. Graduated high school in 87 . My Saturday nights were spent with friends and my now wife at "the mall". Miss the excitement of Christmas there and meeting of friends.
Thank you so much for another trip down memory lane! I would've been nine years old when this video was shot, and it reminds me so much of when my parents and I Christmas shopped at our local malls in Rochester, NY. Our go-to department stores back then were McCurdy's, Sibley's, Sears, and JCPenney.
As an early gen alpha (I was born in 2012) I still shop at the mall early in the morning or at night with my parents especially during christmas. I’d take going to the mall ANY day over scrolling through tik-tok
I can smell those Rochas and Oscar de la Renta from here 😂, pretty sure the entire mall smelled to something similar bc it all smelled like that, perfumes from the 70s, everything smelled like white flowers, powdery and woody, even children and teens smelled like it with that popular Tartine et Chocolat from Givenchy, and the Beverly Hills!!. Crazy, today nobody can stand those smells and call them "grandma" but at the same time they love those bc they smell like childhood, good times and comfort.
I recognized the old fragrances in the video. I looked through the comments to see who else mentioned any of them, and so far, you're the only one. Who else here remembers and recognizes all the different Rochas fragrances and the less well-known ones by Oscar de La Renta, like the Ruffles bottle that was displayed on the counter at 3:22, and the big factice bottle of Decadence by Parlux at 2:55? That was a great decade for women's fragrances.
The Malls at Christmas were decorated so beautifully. Another lost treasure in our new high tech, shop online world.

Ignorance is bliss.
This was 9 years before I was born but this is how life should be!
*Late 80's Christmases are rad!*
I remember my parents spending $500 each on my brother and l. In the 80s it was a lot. Christmas was magical
That WAS a lot in the 80's! 😲
That's sweet. They probably saved up for months to do that for you.
I remember my son was 7 and my daughter 2 years old. Wonderful days❤
Everyone behaving. No nonsense and fuckery.
@@ScottTeresi
Ohhh I know how it was lol I lived through the later 70s and seen quite a bit...especially during the 80s.
@@ScottTeresi True. Some people were always jerks. However, speaking generally on that issue of interpersonal behavior, it was better for the average person in 60's-80's. Also, real jobs according to education, experience were pretty much for the asking. If you went downtown and knocked on doors and were earnest, decent and presentable, chances are you'd go home with some kind of a clerical or retail job!
@@robertbullock9554 My Dad says the same thing about jobs back then... I wish it was still that easy... And if you're lucky to even get hired at a grocery store, you'll be spending more than half the day taking grueling online tests just to bag groceries and round up shopping carts ...
Life was good back then. I thought it would get better. I was sure wrong.
Agree.
the more candid recordings of the past we have, the more we will have a view of the true past. i encourage everyone to record candid activities to keep a authentic record of the past.
I miss the 80's it was an exciting time especially at Christmas! I have many fond memories back then. My parents are both gone now so Holidays just aren't the same and people in public now are something else to say the least! Thanks for Sharing a little piece of history! 🎄💚😎
Love it all. Imagine if someone recognizes themselves or someone they know.
Thank you for sharing this. I was 13 during the Christmas season in 1987. I miss the 80s!!
I was 3 in the summer of 1987. Happy 😊 50th birthday 🎉 this year in 2024

@@AlisonCanty-u2w thanks so much. I’m 41 now 🙂
@ Oh, okay, well Happy Belated 41st! 😊
Old days, Gold days
The best of times! Thanks for posting.
Always a treat going to Marshall Field's on State St. in Chicago. Great times! 😊
Or Water Tower.
gift wrapping on the spot was amazing.. but even more weird and amazing where our malls had gift wrapping areas with a long table. I watched my mom pay a few dollar to have the gifts she just bought wrapped at these stations, as a kid i thought the whole thing was weird but now its magical to me.
You don’t see anyone wearing pajama pants
Starting in 1990 men wore those stupid, baggy gym/pajama pants a lot. I was so glad when they went out of style. Hopefully they don’t make a comeback.
What are people SUPPOSED to be wearing then?? Is there a dress code when at the shopping mall....??
Lol, I remember that too when you were never, ever to wear pajamas anywhere in public no ifs, ands, or buts! I also remember too that the stores and businesses seemed to always have "no shirt, no shoes, no service" signs as well.
I always wondered as a kid if there was ever an issue with that (people bare foot or shirtless)? Maybe there were lots of hippies that did that in the 60s/70s? I am a kid of the 80s/90s so I didn't understand where the origins of that came from...although I do remember men going shirtless a lot more back then in the heat.
Or awful lulu leggings with socks over the top and a muffin top to match
@@ckendall67 No, but there is self-respect.
The decorations were so beautiful at this store! What a classy place! I’d love to be able to jump into the video and hang out there for a while.
I really do appreciate these videos, your channel is just fantastic :)
Was in my early 20's then. Really remember these days and miss them.
Christmas so special in 80s i was 10 years old in 1987
Loadin' up on the goods!
Oh well.
These are developing countries or recently developed.
I used to get so excited when mommy and daddy would drive around looking for a parking spot outside Sears during Christmas
I worked at the mall in the late 90's.. those were some of my best memories from my teen years
Notice the low din of chatter. You don't hear that as much in the mall anymore.
Society was different back then.
@@one7decimal2eightIt was much better back then and people were much calmer and less stressed.
Bring back Marshal Fields! Shopping with class.
That was fun. I was in college in ‘87. Now I get most things from Amazon. Sad, but true.
@sharonrose50 I second that statement. Couldn’t of said it any better and clearer.
100% Agree!
If only it was that simple of an explanation.
Sad thing is….I could’ve been in this video, reminded me so much of growing up in the 80’s. Marshall Fields was a solid part of my life growing up, and my high school would do a shopping day to Chicago at Christmas.
Nobody in their pajamas or underwear 🩲 in 1987.
Back when people still dressed well.
I hate what the internet has done to our world.
Ahh, the good ole days when companies and stores cared about customers and decorated for Christmas. Magical and beautiful times.
Christmas 1987 . . . All I wanted wanted was a SWATCH watch . . . Thank you Mom 😃 . . . Reminds me of Great Northern Mall North Olmsted OHIO
Back when people would wash and put on clean clothes before leaving the house. I dont see a single person in their pajamas.
They're also shopping at a high class store. Not Ames or Bradlees
Always look forward to the next upload! Thanks
They had a certain warmth which is ironic as they were so big. Felt like home.
The "glory days" for me. Graduated high school in 87 . My Saturday nights were spent with friends and my now wife at "the mall". Miss the excitement of Christmas there and meeting of friends.
Likewise...I was 18 in 87.....just graduated and it was one of the best yrs of my life. I hate the world today
CHICAGO! (And I will always call it Marshall Field's!
As an early gen alpha (I was born in 2012) I still shop at the mall early in the morning or at night with my parents especially during christmas. I’d take going to the mall ANY day over scrolling through tik-tok
People were dressed so beautiful with 14k gold jewelry ….its bittersweet to watch these.
In 1987, people were shopping for Swatch watches..
A great time to be at the mall at a wonderful time in history.
Once upon a time when the world had no social media.
Hey folks, for context: This is the ORIGINAL Marshall Fields on State Street in Downtown Chicago... which still exists today as a Macy's.
Aw, my daughter was 4. Good memories.
That lady on the escalator with the little girl - wearing heels while shopping - yowsies.
This is not a mall; it is Field's State Street flagship store.
Once upon a time... when shopping in the city was an event and the only way, because no internet...👍❤
Life was so much better before the stupid internet 🛜
Everyone is dressed so nice.....

It's so nice to remember a world where people weren't zombies staring into their phones. Sigh.
This is back in 1987. All that stuff wasn't invented yet until 20 years later. Here we are now with smart phones glued to our hands 24/7 non stop.
