In an exclusive interview with Rahul Kanwal, Executive Director of Business Today, IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director, Dr. Gita Gopinath, discusses India’s economic prospects. She notes that consumption, including in rural areas, is picking up, which is a positive indicator for the country's economic growth. Dr. Gopinath also explains why the IMF has raised India's growth projection to 7%, affirming that India is set to remain the fastest-growing economy among the G20 nations. She outlines what the government needs to do to achieve the higher growth rates projected by the IMF, highlighting the importance of infrastructure and digital reforms, education, and workforce skilling. Additionally, she touches on the need for reforms in land and agriculture sectors and discusses the impact of trade tariffs and protectionism. Dr. Gita Gopinath also comments on the employment-linked incentive scheme introduced in the recent budget, suggesting that linking it with other schemes might yield better results, although the IMF is still awaiting outcomes. When asked about India's 'Viksit Bharat' goal for 2047, she acknowledges that while India is currently the fastest-growing major economy, 2047 is still a long way off. However, she expects India to become the third-largest economy in the world by 2027 based on current growth projections. She also gives her views on addressing the widening gap between the rich and the poor in India. She also discusses the IMF's economic projections for Bangladesh following the recent crisis. Tune in to the full interview for deeper insights from Dr. Gita Gopinath, IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director, on India’s growth outlook and future trajectory.

As an IMD MD what is her reading of the cash locks in individuals with no charging on the flow of cash into the system with multiple stagnanacy due to corruption and looting atleast i see minimum 100 people in this country locking 5 lac/10 lac crores of untilised cash stock in godowns with no circulation. Wont she feel an iIMD intereference and an audit based on IMD injectiong of funds into the system which in otherwords would probably lead to the economy to grow at atleast minimum double digit with ease and comfort. What is her support role as an IMD MD in exercising her restriction to bringdown the cash circulation situation inside and outsoide the country. parking of funds abroad by many indisviduals all needs attensiion as an audit from IMD MD. I see cash free economy in India will work wonders bringingup the current inertia to tremendrous heights in short span of time with huge growth and upliftment of the whole system as a whole . The anchor has mentioned that the present govt at the centre has no majority and hence, he asked, can it carry out big economic reforms needed to fuel the economic growth to a higher trajectory so that it can by 2047 achieve the status of Vikasit Bharat of Modi’s dream. Saying this govt doesn’t have majority is wrong. It’s NDA which is a prepoll coalition of like minded parties which got the absolute majority of 292 seats and hence formed the govt without any need for seeking vote of confidence. So this wrong peddling of electoral narrative by a responsible news channel in an important show is most disturbing and disappointing. It’s definitely malicious and intended to damage India’s dream of vikasit bharat. Secondly on income disparities the anchor should have done some home work in how the major economies too suffer from income inequalities. In a democratic capitalist economies where most of the economic activity is profit driven and being in the private sector there will be disparity in income distribution. And in our case it’s also true but govt spend on housing, health, education and other welfare measures is quite huge and bridging the gap. You may not see it translating in cash terms but it helps enormously to bridge income gap. It’s an accepted fact in public finance where it’s called Transfer Payments. Thirdly Farm Laws which were enacted are basically intended to increase the farmer’s income by empowering them to sell their produce at a rate profitable to them instead of selling to Market Yards. But media did not support govt but supported Saheen Bagh agitation proped up by brokers, commission agents and dallals. So how can rural incomes would rise? Why this double standards? Supporting agitations and criticising govt. Media should stop this game.

Poppycock at best! First, let’s not get swayed by her being the Deputy MD of the IMF. Second, I haven’t seen an Indian economist yet whose thinking is out-of-box. Parroting the same damn things that Indians want to hear and see is not being devoted to the field of economics. Was startled right at the start of this interview when she attributed the weak consumer spending until last year to the poor rainfall. There was absolutely no mention made of the high inflation that has gripped India since 2022. That’s the key reason for the weak consumer spending. It’s so insidious that inflation is still very much present today. The high interest rates today are a testament to the persistent and stubborn high inflation. It gets worse when she says consumer spending has been on the increase this year. But it’s not going to be getting any better. High inflation has cut into people’s savings. Furthermore, the improvement in consumer spending is because of massive freebies that have been given away. It’s going to ebb soon. Freebies are not going to last forever. Moreover, the high inflation has even made the freebies more expensive to the govt and consequently less effective than intended.
Inflation’s a disease as Nobel Economist Milton Friedman put it. I still can’t believe that she’s talking of India’s being able to hit the ambitious targets with such high inflation around 5%. How can any Indian economist be so off the subject they love? If they’ve got the hang of economics, then shouldn’t they be afraid of policies that bank on monetary expansion called for by govt spending beyond revenue for economic growth?
Kudos to her for being the Deputy MD at IMF, but she absolutely doesn’t come across as one who is devoted to the field of economics beyond the ability to side with the irrational rhetoric that’s been going on since 2019. If things were all good as they make it out to be, then how come the elections returned a major change in the demand of the masses?
Also, this has been a ploy of the west. To deflate and derail us. First they got all Indian Americans to be CEOs and through them emptied our coffers ($2B handoff to Micron) and gave our personal data away (Google, Microsoft). Now been on a gaslighting mission for a while. Complacency is what they’ve targeted and it’s what they’ve achieved. Complacency is what the west uses cleverly against a very emotional populace.
Need to learn from the Chinese. See reality for what it is. $55T in 2047 is just impossible if we’re banking on a growth rate of 8% along with an inflation rate of 5%. Just as I had said back in 2021 that $5T by 2024 is impossible through the mechanism of monetary expansion alone. Cuz inflation kicks in and increases inequality. GDP growth without the intended per capita GDP growth is of no consequence. The rich will have become filthily richer, but not the vast majority who get beaten by inflation and become poorer. And that’s not going to make us a developed nation. Nor is it going to help us achieve the target of $55T by 2047.
BTW, a High GDP or being the third or second, or even the first, largest GDP isn’t necessarily the hallmark of developed nations. What is is a high per capita GDP alone figuring in the upwards of $40K regime. People and Indian economists really seem to be on a trip to delude themselves.

current inflation rate is 4.85% which is well within the rbi guideline bracket of 2-6%

    • @sid1680
      @sid1680 20 дней назад

@@mytechnicalway3624 Well, I would not take whatever the RBI says as sacrosanct. Yet to see sane economists using inflation as part of a growth strategy.
First and foremost, the source of inflation is us individuals. We like to sell high and buy low everything. That’s why we haggle with a vendor. On average we balance each other out. Plus good old Adam Smith says provided the monetary supply is held constant, there isn’t extra money to bring about inflation.
When Indian economists (including those at the RBI) include an inflation figure between 4 & 6%, it is clear they’re using monetary expansion as the basis on which to achieve economic growth. Right away, it’s a no-no.
Once again, Friedman’s discovery of the science of monetary expansion is very important. He’s very carefully explained (with data from various countries) that monetary expansion is to be done in response to growth in economic activity to make sure the current monetary supply doesn’t stultify the increases in economic activity. The timing of monetary expansion he emphasized is very critical. Friedman’s also explained (with data and an equation he came up with that explains the data) that any monetary expansion done (in advance) to boost economic activity results in high inflation. Given these reasons above, what the RBI and the Indian economists are doing is plain incorrect.
Unfortunately, monetary expansion in advance of any increases in economic activity is always what India did. Have watched it since the 1970s.
Finally, it’s silly to target an inflation range. No economist does it. Simply because no one has a handle, direct or indirect, on inflation. They merely tweak the interest rates like knobs when the inflation rate starts to rise sharply in the hope that it may come down. It may come down. But it doesn’t do easily. Just look at what has happened in the west since 2022. The inflation rate didn’t come down as intended. It’s very stubborn. Clearly indicating that even turning the interest rate knobs doesn’t help us bring the inflation rate down. In India too, it’s the same story. All the more reason therefore that a range for the inflation rate like the one which Indian economists have provided is wrong. They’re doing this only to be able to rely on the mechanism of monetary expansion for economic growth. It’s like climbing up an escalator going down.

I think India hasn’t done much drastically different in terms of execution (plan and theory everyone in India says) than that of Man Mohan Singh eras. I would also like to mention many states are still struggling nothing much have changes in the last decade maybe Modi’s place Gujarat may but rest of India??

The issue with these experts, advisors, financial experts, is that they dont give any practical solutions, they will vomit what they studied in colleges with lots of figures which is prepared by many government agencies,,, garbage in garbage out ,,the solution for creating jobs , is by reducing interest rate on LDO ,, at present interest rate its not possible to make profit by taking LDO from banks and financial institutions,,, LDO interest rate are presently dependent on demand and supply,,, of course the demand for LDO will allways be very high, so demand must not be the criteria for interest rates,, total world needs to reinnovate the financial systems, interest rate and its calculation methods ,, money is only an instrument used by governments to make the people productive, deciplined, and for buying and selling,,,, its only like animal fodder used by the butcher to lead the animals to the slaughter house,, he doesn't give any real value for the animal fodder, 🙏🌹

India is growing, but the question here is why is the youth of this country does not have employment? The answer lies in two facts. Firstly, labour intensive sectors are not growing rather shrinking and industries and service sectors which require less labour is growing. Secondly, as Gita pointed out. Human development in terms of education and skills have not grown and the research and innovation has fallen behind and will take time.
Here lies the main crux of the issue. This government for the last 10 years has completely neglected both the human development and research development . While countries like Israel and China have spend more money than other countries for the research and development of new technology, we have invested in building statues and image building.

Will Rahul Gandhi agree with Gita's analysis? We should give some credit to the current government and Modi. Overall, they are doing well and making the best efforts to maintain balance in democracy and its limitation. Rahul Gandhi is bad for the country, his socialism and freebies won’t work in India. Capitalism is the only solution, Temporary there will be higher gap between poor and high performer rich. and we shouldn’t worry about billionaires-they are job creators. We can address income disparities once we surpass the global average. As long as billionaires continue reinvesting in job creation, it’s fine. The real issue lies with those, like certain kings, politicians and multi national, who take money out of the country.

Consumption increases CAD and fiscal deficits. UPA's growth model was consumption based due to unsupervised private lending, leading to bad bank loans, etc. The current govt. is stimulating economy through CAPEX, which boosts the GDP w/o public consumption. At a time when the world economy is at its ebb, there is no point in consuming more than you can export. Times are different. Therefore, the modus operandi of GDP growth is different. Hope you understand.
