Thanks for posting this Jake - it's very helpful. At 2:50, I usually connect the safety leash first, and then hook into the chicken loop while the anchor/caribeaner is still connected to the chicken loop, and then finally remove the anchor/caribeaner from the chicken loop and launch the kite. It looks like you pulled the caribeaner off the chicken loop and held the chicken loop in your hands, before hooking it. This works for you but when you're using big kites or flying in high winds, that can be pretty risky because you're not hooked in yet, leaving the entire pull of the kite in your hands. Lastly, it's also good practice to keep a hand on the top center-line when the kite is on it's wingtip and you're running back/forth to hook in. It prevents the kite from wanting to pop up especially in gusty winds. Awesome video - keep em coming!
Nice video. When I had the c4 on 4 lines it was impossible to self land by pulling the upper power line. I could do it with other kites but not on the c4. It would just pick up wind and fly up again. So the first time you try it in a new kite (particularly if it is some sort of 4 line hybrid c) try it with caution.
I've just learnt this landing method today on a 4 line bar. The best advice I had was to pull the top powerline as you drive the kite gently rather than when it's on the wing tip. Works a treat.
Jake you're amazing! One other tip - when you're handling the kite line keep your hands ON TOP of the line and your thumbs up. "Hand Over Hand Thumbs Up" - that way if the lines tension they are less likely to cut you.
+kountchev1 In strong winds I would still recommend the anchor method. Just make sure you have a solid anchor that will be able to hold the pull of your kite. ;)
With the first self-land technique, any advice for keeping the kite from back-stalling and tumbling backwards before you can grab the line and start pulling? Our launch and land area can be fairly holey and whenver I try this, without fail it ends up tumbling backwards and I have to eject... Would love to figure out whatever little tweaks I need to make to my kite handling to avoid this. Thanks! And great video!
Jake. Really love your vids! Big help! I would love to kite on my lake here but we have simply no shore room to launch. Any trick how I can let the kite drift out on the lake and then launch it? We have about 10-12 knots sideshore wind here and I got the 17qm core XR4 LW.
+Nilz4FR hey, awesome thanks for watching! Drift launching is pretty straight forward. You just want to drift /float your kite out until it catches the wind. And then launch it up just like you would if you crashed in the water. Only thing to watch out for it not getting your lines twisted or caught on anything as you launch. All the best dude, safe shredding!
Thanks Bro. Should I unfold the lines while I let the kite drift? How would you land the kite then? Just in the Water and pool it towards the shore on the middle lines?
@@Nilz4FR No, the lines should be unfolded already and floating in the water. Connect your chicken loop to your hook on the shore, walk to the kite, grub it and drug into the water. Before releasing the kite, deep the leading edge under the water so that the water gets on top of the canopy and keeps the kite down.
self launching approach you showed - is it working with strong winds? when I try to catch wind and my kite is down in the powerzone (with onshore wind) I will just fly towards the trees...
Hi Jake. Great video. I recently did a self landing using the top front line on my catalyst but the kite flipped upside down & out of control. No harm or damage (got lucky). Would that have happened because I wasn't quick/aggressive enough with pulling the line? I have made several successful landings using both your techniques. I'm only fairly new to kiting. Thanks. Ron
In light wind this technique will typically work fine. In high wind, where your kite is fully powered, if you're going to try to land your kite by yanking the front line, it's a lot more sketchy. Where I live we kite on lakes and we have to self land like this all the time. I'd say 1 of 6-8 tries fails to some degreee. The kite tries to relaunch but perhaps I keep pulling and get it down, or perhaps I just let it fly again and try again, and sometimes the kite immediately goes weird so I just pull the top hat. IMO if powered up you should land the kite on the water so if it goes bad you have time to pull your top hat and not get dragged on the beach or have your kite go in the trees. You want to FULLY pull your depower strap as you lower the kite toward the water/ground, and then yank that front line an instant before the kite touches down. If you wait until it's on the ground I've found it it much more likely to relaunch when you pull the front line. You *can* land your kite this way safely if you are positioned to pull the top hat if necessary. I've done it a thousand times, I'm sure. But it is always a little sketchy, Even in his video, if a gust picks up the kite just as it flops down, leading edge toward him (or if it happens as he's walking in to the kite) he has to instantly pull the top hat and hope nothing bad happens. TL/DR: You can self land with your front line if you are careful, but be ready for it to go bad at any moment, because sometimes it will.
Axaroth Fiefa Thanks very much for your reply. The episode I wrote about, the wind was onshore with only two metres of beach with trees and shrubs downwind. I think I need more practice in less hazardous locations. There's sure plenty to learn. Happy kiting 👍
+Ron Blume Thanks for giving Ron a solid run down. IMHO the safest and most reliable way to self land is using the Anchor method. But it's rare that you will always have something to use as an anchor so I'd say teach some friends how to launch and land and you will be good to go. And last resort you can use the front line method in nice and mellow winds. No need to be attempting it in high winds, kiteboarding can get crazy enough when its windy much less when trying to self land in sketchy spots! Thanks for watching guys! Safe & Happy Shredding!
Hi Jake. I live in Tasmania, Australia & where I kite I'm often alone without even beach walkers. We recently had a massive crowd of kiters when there were 10 of us out! The anchor point take off/landing is great advice in tight spots. I can often use the towball of my car. I'll practice the freestyle launches & landings at the lower tides when I have acres of beach. Thanks. Ron 👍
I'd recommend taking at least and intro lesson dude! There is a lot of safety stuff that is super important to learn so you can be a safe kiter and spend a long time shredding without ever getting hurt or hurting someone else. 🤙🏻
after you have been kiting for 3+ years, and you have expensive kites, its actually quite safe to go suicide mode, letting the bar go depowers you, and you just need that little bit of leesh extension to give it a few more milliseconds to depower that bit more.. completely safe.. to be not safe would be to hang on to the bar, 100% power, boom 40 meters in the sky. oh and its probably not called suicide mode anymore, because you actually have 1 more release these days at the other end of the kite leash.
Ya man in those conditions its cool using the self landing technique, in fact the high wind really accentuates the process and sends the kite down quick when you get the kite to the edge of the window and go for the 5th line or the lower back line and take a few steps down wind while pulling it in. Self Launching in those conditions are quite different, I suggest the anchor method.
yep tried in 44knots yesterday. pulled the top front line, comes down easy as! and perfectly lands safely. bring it to 20-45 degrees in the sky then pull the front line. it lands on a dime.. I used this technique #1 to land on 2 meters of beach with trees!!! I have seen IKO instructors teaching it in 35 knots, they can actually do it from close to 10 or 11 oclock in the sky. amazing! get an instructor to teach you.. its worth the money and your life. this effectively fly's your kite upside down on the front line..
problem is not a steady 35 knots. it is the gusts coming from different directions. The only method which works in gusty strong winds is to anchor the kite somewhere and the pull the safty while the kite is anchored. flipping the kite onto the leading edge so it gets pressed down by the wind doesnt work. Best case you got in on the ground and it will be blown away again, worst case it flys like a wing and now you really have to pull your safety. anchor method means the kite can suddenly take off. had that happen to me as well.
You’re a better kite than I but 2 obvious mistakes in my view. Placing the board fin down on the kite is a no no. Damages the canopy. Even though the wind was light you should always weight it down. Not a good idea to teach bad habits in my view in an instructional video.

So simple and easy, next step is just practice. Thanks Jake.
Added to SKD tutorial playlist. Great video dude.
This should 'only' be done in light winds. Thanks for uploading.
Have to try. Looks easy, thanks for tour clear explanations.
Thank you for posting this! Been wakeboarding forever and am about to make the jump to Kiteboarding!
Yeah buddy! About time, you been watching kite videos for years!
great video! could you also explain to how to setup the lines etc?even when I change my setup I don't feel the pressure in the back lines...
You’re an excellent teacher thank you
Good idea with the leash around the log (i'm even thinking spare dog leash).
great vid! and how about self- launching and landing in strong winds?
+kountchev1 In strong winds I would still recommend the anchor method. Just make sure you have a solid anchor that will be able to hold the pull of your kite. ;)

cool videos bro!! always on tune!!! ;) big fan of your tona boards!

Step upwind a few steps as you pull the flag out line.

Great video! But when you self launch with an anchor you need to depower?
+JULLEONE don't have to, but you can if its a bit on the windy side. 😊
Great video sir
thank you very much for this just what I was looking for

Bravo! Nicely Done!
Oh for constant wind. Pretty much all of this proves nigh impossible in gusty, holey wind with your kite jumping 10ft forward and backwards 😂
His smoth voice reminds me of Bruce from Family Guy.
Thanks bro. Nice tips
Hi, great video ! Where was the spot located please ?
What a beautiful beach
with the frontline landing. in high wind the kite almost falls everytime straight in to the wind. great video btw
+Menno l'Abee yeah Manno. High winds can make things a bit more tricky! Thanks for watching 😊
release main safety in strong wind

Really nice video! Where did you shoot it at?
Shot at Jabberwock Beach in Antigua :)
Everything looks like taking candy from a baby ! Lol
Great video Jake ..... also see beachhook.com for sand anchor for launch and landing ones kite
Only attempt this in lowwinds . Thou kite anchor is ok for high winds ..
Sweet! Thanks dude !
Thanks this was helpful
I am gonna start kiteboarding and learning it without lessons, this is gonna help me, thx !
I'd recommend taking at least and intro lesson dude! There is a lot of safety stuff that is super important to learn so you can be a safe kiter and spend a long time shredding without ever getting hurt or hurting someone else. 🤙🏻
Don’t do that! Take at least 1-2 days of classes
Nice I like it and Subbed
+Radu Blaga thanks dude! I'll do my best to keep the videos coming! 👊😊
Nice ty
Did you really attach safety to the chicken loop?!
Hi jack
Likely your videos
Ciao my teacher... from Italy!!!
great demo
except were you connected the leach
you connected it to the suicide instead of the depower. its crazy unsafe

Спасибо за хорошие советы
I thought I recognized that beach!
Where is this beautiful beach at?
On the island of Antigua 😉
that's it... I am off to Antigua
Thank you!
Every Kitesurfer needs to know how to self land and should learn this on day 1 :)
Thank you
news boots?
In heavy wind, that’s it impossible!!!
Nice video. Make sure you folks stay off of the dune/vegetation on the beach. High five.
Nice
..not so easy in 35+ knots Cape town !.....
+Bernard Kriel haha kiting is a whole different beast in those conditions

I only understood boom boom boom
ok and now selfland when it is 35 knots
anchor method works with 35 knots of wind. Not sure about pulling the line.

Now With 30knt 😁🤣
nice but next time don't put music
