How were you guys able to ride in China? I have a 10 year Chinese tourist visa but I read foreigners can not travel independently in the Xinjiang region???
We had to cross with a guide (which was super expensive) - you're right, we couldn't travel (fully) independently. We had to be with a guide at the border when crossing into China and at any checkpoints etc, also guide organised all the hotels etc. And sometimes we had to stick together on the road but sometimes he just let us go to have some fun but we had to meet him later.
It's not to do with Pakistani border but with the Xinjiang region in China - it's China that requires a guide. Xinjiang is a rather sensitive region and they don't want people going and exploring on their own. I was trying to find a way to do this without a guide but I couldn't. I believe someone tried to do this without a guide and they managed to cross the border, but they were then questioned by police and probably risked being arrested.
It's only when entering with your own vehicle and crossing these borders from Kyrgyzstan and into Pakistan. I think cyclists, backpackers and other travellers don't need a guide.
How ironic in hindsight, they disinfected your bike entering China ! And what a con it seems that you have to cross in an organised group, sounds like they just don't trust free roaming tourists. However, nice to see you in a group albeit for a short spell, having fun and making new friends. Already waiting for the next one.

the scenery is awesome - did you get the battery fixed? JB...

Is there no other way to cross that is cheaper? Is the Pakistan boarder closed or dangerous to cross in there?

That's weird, I've seen videos of people travelling or cycling through xinjiang without hiring a guide, is it because you're travelling as a group ?

@@RTWRoxy I see, thanks for the info.
