What is lost with a lot of goalies and lower level goalie coaches is that a lot of these save selections have specific conditions you're supposed to use them in. An NHL/Pro level coach is going to drill when you are and are not supposed to use a specific one. But as the info flows down the ranks, it often gets compressed to just "do this fancy save selection" and loses the additional context, and then becomes a habit for a young goalie.
VH was one of the more glaringly obvious ones because although the catcher up protects decently, the blocker side up has holes and is only useful at a few ranges/angles. But for the longest time, goalies were just using it for anything that wasn't out in front.
You can use the knowledge to great effect if you're a former goalie playing forward in beer league. RVH? Bounce it off the side of the head or inside the post above the pad (so many don't seal it, it's an awkward position). VH? Use them as a passing board. Overlap? Bounce it off their back.
Oh, and many forget they aren't a 6'7" Russian contortionist who can get away with staying in said position for a lot more angles/distances. Us shorter goalies (below 6'2") have to move a lot more ;)

very well said. I personally do not like the RVH at all. I am a 5'10" goalie and still use the VH primarily. One thing that I feel is never talked about is the ability to easily push off with your post leg for a slot pass. In the VH, my leg is already locked and loaded in anticipation of a pass. I can move from the post to a standard challenge position in the slot. Whereas with the rvh I can only move laterally. I dont know if that makes sense but I personally do not see any advantage of the RVH over VH but if the pros are doing it, there must be.

I’m a goalie for my high school team, I tried it out and it worked. I used it in practice and so am getting better at the squirrel. Thanks for the advice

What’s annoying is I originally did the panda then got coached not to do it because it’s “wrong” then now it’s the thing to do. Which leads me to believe a lot of coaches just repeat whatever other coaches say and have no real why things are done and not done in goalie positions

Yup you’re right the Squirrel IS the future, although I believe the key is super huge pads too,
so find your Max in your league and buy only those.
    Agreed?

I feel like panda is not as much of a position save as the reverse where you sit and wait, the panda you have to time when you are about to go down

I can fix your RVH with one term: SoP
    Shin on Post.
This allows you to “stand” over your knee vs collapsed over your knee as with Top(Toe on Post).
SoP allows your body to stand straight up and seal your post vs ToP which leave gaps under and over the glove.
Bc you stand over your knee you gain height, so your shoulder which in ToP is well under the bar is now sealing the top cheese efforts.
    Hate me?
    Well I hope not, bc here’s more;
SoP is faster to slide into AND more accurate, well rather it’s more forgiving of your (my, all Gs) inaccuracy, all you NEED it to land any part if shin on post and you’re sealed, minor adjustments to follow as needed.
Great for jams, or short-side-fuck I’m behind the play saves.
More: a Swedish health study concluded that RVH was the leading cause of hip injuries in Elite Gs, BUT they assumed that ALL RVH are ToP, that’s not necessarily true. SoP is much easier on hips and knees.
The one upside to ToP; an explosive push to center…love it.
But are all low plays leading to high plays? Definitely not.
ToP and SoP should be in every tool box.
Now let’s see your take on Panda
-Signed the actual BEST BEER LEAGUE GOALIE.
    -joking, just joking.

As Kasi, explains, you’re assuming a down position.
Do it at speed on your feet.
Only down as the shot comes short-side, otherwise if it’s a pass across you uncoil your hips and easy push to new angle.
It’s all only about 2-1 or any rush that threatens a realistic wide to middle pass and one T.
Yeah I get there’s parody going on.
    Keep it up.
    Anything goalie works for me!
    Now let’s see this SQUIRREL!
