- Why holi festival is celebrated?
Holi, the festival of colors represents victory of good over evil. It is the festival where people play, meet others, forget and forgive others. There are 2 stories associated with this festival, lets see the first story.
Once there lived a asura king Hiranyakashipu who got a boon from lord brahma such that “he should not be killed indoor or outdoor, neither by animal or by human, neither in land or water or air, neither by any weapons, neither in day or night”. Thus no one could kill him and he demanded all to pray him. Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlada rejected his demand and said only lord Vishnu is superior. The asura king got angry and tried many actions to kill his son, but all in vain.
Then Holika, Prahlada’s aunt performed a fire practice. Both prahlada and holika sat in the fire. Holika wear a invisible cloth which made her resistant to fire. Suddenly a wind blew and the cloth blew into prahlada’s body and thus the evil holika was burned into the fire and the lord Vishnu saved prahlada once again. The lord himself took an avatar called Narasimha avatar to kill the asura king Hiranyakashipu. This incident is celebrated as a victory of good over evil. This is one of the story why holi is celebrated.
