I’m currently rereading The Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T Kingfisher. It’s just a fun magic middle grade book about a girl saving her kingdom with baked goods. Kingfisher is one of my favorite creepy-cozy authors and I’ve read this one every year since it came out.
the astarion art at 3:25 is everything, I'm glad we still love the sad vampire man (I know it's from february, but it's still good to see him)
Omg I get summer depression too! So so happy it’s coming into winter in Australia.
Hey resident archivist here again ! If you're planning on keeping your pages in those archive binders for a long time I'd recommend putting a cover / end page between your pages and the cover. This type of plastic is acidic and there's a good chance that it could stick to your page or degrade it with some time/potential heat
I just finished reading The Murderbot Diaries series and then immediately picked up the first one to reread because, yes, i know what it's like to be stuck in the universe. the book is about an anxious antisocial cyborg created to work in security, but it only wants to watch series and not have to interact with humans. it has a really dry and sarcastic humor and it's soooo funny. also the serie is mostly made of novellas and just two novels, so it's a pretty easy read
I've been wanting to start this series!
omg I am actually obsessed with this series!! I immediately started a reread after finishing the series too!!
Dry and sarcastic sounds so lovely!... Will note this one down, thanks a lot!
reading recommendations:
(i've gotten into reading shorter pieces recently, so here are a few things i enjoyed)
- toil & trouble - a witchy literary magazine. it's short stories and poems and art.
- on keeping a notebook by joan didion - an essay about.. keeping a notebook! i just love women writing about writing and their thoughts on things
- five signs of disturbance by lydia davis - a short story about mental ilness
Thank you for existing, :') I really enjoy your company and your time
I got out of an unsafe situation recently that had been going on for a long time, and I’m feeling better physically than I have in years. But because I’m safe now, my brain is saying I have to process all this bad stuff. It’s feeling very scary, muddled, and stressful in my head.
But I put this on and suddenly started feeling like everything was okay. It quieted the chaos in my brain so I could enjoy my safe environment.
Thank you. ❤️🩹
What an aesthetic video,
For sharing the content,
For the efforts you put,
For the inspiration,
For explaining so beautifully,
And for existing; thank you so so much!
Hope you are much better now and taking good care of yourselves. 🌸
As a winter depression person I can't imagine experiencing it in summer, that's awful. Lovely to see you so content in your binder system though ❤, imo that makes for the best videos to watch even when it's not a system I share. Netflix cancelling everything good is too real, still mourning Lockwood&Co. 😢 The last book I read sucked, but I will always recommend Erebos to anyone as I love it. I also really liked Ready Player One. (Haven't watched the film for either.) Both share the theme of much of the story taking place inside a video game. 🎮
im currently reading Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries after some falling off of ACOTAR... very whimsical cottage vibes so far and a nice treat to take my mind off of The Horrors recently. your video is also helping with The Horrors so thank you :)
one of my favorite books is Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. the whole novel takes place in a small Tokyo coffee shop and is about a special coffee that can let you time travel when you drink it (but there are rules). you follow the stories of people in the cafe, and it's very cozy and heartfelt.
So I am not alone in loving Live recordings...then again I love listening to vinyl because of the static that is added. Makes the music more alive...hard to describe. Thank you always for making me feel more normal with my own little habits. Thanks you to I feel less guilty about books, music and stationary...etc.
I've suffered from summer depression for yeeaaars. It really is such a weird season to get through.
I'm currently reading The Bread We Eat in Dreams by Catherynne M. Valente. It's short stories and poems, so they're all a mix of genres, but most are fantasy, and some are mythological. It's been a fun time.
Also started playing Stardew again as well! Such a good game to vibe and lose hours in.
i very much also hate summer, and tend to read quiet gloomy books to combat it- shirley jackson is always my favourite (i am currently re-reading my favourite, the sundial, i read it as may begins every year and it always helps me feel a little better)
"currently reading" is a bit of a stretch for me since i haven't picked up the book in months (my adhd is good at starting new things but not finishing them), but the last book i've been slowly tryna make my way through was "the long way to a small angry planet" by becky chambers. i really enjoy it so far! it's kind of a slowpaced, slice of life scifi.. and there's something weirdly comforting as an autistic reading about a human trying to interact with different aliens, trying to be respectful of customs without always knowing to is a bit of an autistic mood.
currently reading Half A Soul !! the characters are so endearing i love it so much !!
I‘m reading The Boys in the Valley as my bedtime story before going to sleep at the moment.
My seasonal depression starts in spring, I absolutely hate this time of year. Thankfully March and April had some nice cool temperatures and dull days. But now it starts to really suck 🤮 Can‘t wait for Autumn when I can finally come alive again.
I mostly read nonfiction so I apologize if my recs are not your thing. But I’m currently reading Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs by Camilla Townsend. Really cool book about Mesoamerican history told by the natives. Love your videos Megan! Keep being you :)
Surprised by my own joy at seeing the pylon! Lovely video 🖤✨
Love the covers and the video. So soothing. Also, like you, I get seasonal depression in the summer, so I am also concerned with it coming up.
Currently reading Piranesi. Good read so far.
I can’t wait to look through all the book recs :) I’m reading The Last Unicorn (why is it sooo goood) and I’m also reading The Starless Sea (this is very The Discovery of Witches esque, with lovely cozy descriptions centered around books and magic)
I love the new cover with the gold and big rings 😍
I just read The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and I really liked it, especially the atmosphere!
I recently read Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and thoroughly enjoyed it as a classic of the Gothic Fiction genre, but I’m also reading The Premonition by Banana Yoshimoto which is a good exploration of family and how the past can control us if we let it.
I loved Carmilla!
same, carmilla was a cool read!
I just finished the first Part of Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett, and totally loved it. 10 out of 10! It's adult fantasy, but the magic system ist like computer programming - really unique, and really well done. Great story, clever plot, a convincing, complex world and great pacing and narration. But the best thing are the characters - wonderfully sarcastic! The world and story are grim at times, but I had so much fun reading, enjoying their dry comments and watching the relationships between them getting stronger. One of he best things I read in the last month. Reminded me a bit of the SixOfCrows-Duology (clever heist plot meets sarcastic, complex characters you love more the longer you know them).
And, BTW, thank you for The Raven Boys - what a story! Never would have found them without you. 🥰🥰🥰
First of all I can totally relate to the summer depression rather then a winter one! The days are too long and it's too hot and just does damage to me.
As for books, I'm currently reading The Fairy Books, which are books that are compilations of fairytales, folktales and the like from mostly Europe. They come with stunning illustrations but the time does show so do be prepared from some out of left field wording or stories.
I am currently reading "welcome to the hyunam-dong bookshop" by hwang bo-reum. It's a cosy slow paced read. Nothing to like hurry through because you are so sucked into the world, even if it's easy to read. But it's one of those you can just pick up every once in a while when you have a second to read.❤
Also noticed how I'm wired to calm down at your background music from your random snippets part of your videos, since these videos were the only thing to calm my anxiety last year, so thankful for that ❤
I really enjoy your channel as a whole, but have definitely missed the Attic Archives. Appreciate the pylon check.
have you considered getting one of those small air conditioners that you can put in your window? Not sure how common they are in the UK, but they are extremely common in the US. It would probably work really well to cool down just your attic.
ive been trying working in a couple different hobonichi books so far this year and neither are really clicking - i always fall behind and i cant remember enough to back fill the days!!! and i am Tempted to try doing something filofax-esque but idk idk idk i feel bad for wasting the money on the hobonichi books if i decide not to use them...but seeing ur filofax AUGH its so good ! but anyway anyway in terms of books i have recently finished listening to an audiobook of 'the goblin emperor' by katherine addison on audible which was fantastic by itself the reader does such fantastic voices !! but the book itself is one of absolute faves ive read it about four times now - about a young man who suddenly becomes emperor after his father (the emperor) and his four sons die in a very suspicious airship crash, n how he navigates the court / responsibilities / treachery etc . its so hard to describe without sounding boring but it is so good and touching and the mc is so so so so good and the world building is so fun !! if u want a series i recommend 'the realm of the elderlings' by robin hobb good LORD. books that make me feel shrimp emotions - 16 book chronicles made up of 5 series (but u can skip 2 of the series and . they kinda suck so i rec u do that sjkbsk) but the 3 other series follow the mc fitz who is a royal bastard and its just 9 books of him uh Having A Real Time of things. there's animal magic there's mind powers there's dragons there's complex family dynamics there's fitz being kissed TWICE on the MOUTH by his male(ish) best friend . these books literally kept me up at night i cried real tears. anyway thats my essay love ur vids !
I’ve ordered Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York by Lucy Sante. I’m really looking forward to starting it; it was mentioned in the book The Lonely City by Olivia Laing, which I’m re-reading (one of my favorite books ever).
I'm not sure if you like graphic novels, but I've been pretty into them lately. Some of my favourites have been The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang, On a Sunbeam and The End of Summer (in the collection Alone in Space) by Tillie Walden and The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen. Outside of graphic novels, I recently read Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries and the sequel by Heather Fawcett and really enjoyed it.
Awww little Wednesday is so cute 🥰 What a cozy video to wake up to this morning!
i'm going through books i bought years ago that i still havent read and right now i'm reading All the Light We Cannot See and yeah of course it is very very good i was a fool to leave it collecting dust
I've been using the Raymay Davinci covers! I have two, one with 8mm rings for the pages that I use every day, and one with 24mm rings for my common placing, extra pages, recipes, notes, etc. They're leather and very classic, and I've been enjoying them so much!
i'm currently reading jonathan strange and mr norrell, i'm really enjoying it so far!
It's really lovely to see you today, Megan.
I am currently reading the Penguin Clothbound “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” which includes other short stories. It is a good read! I always feel like reading some Victorian lit whenever I long for autumn.
Currently reading “My Heart is a Chainsaw” and I think you would love it! The main character, Jade, is obsessed with slasher films, and is convinced that a slasher cycle is starting in her small town. It’s phenomenal and it’s hilarious and I think you would love it.
I'm finishing up the Veronica Speedwell Mystery series, the lastest book-9th was just released in February or March. I believe the series is classified as Historical Romance. I hadn't read ficition in over 5yrs, and this series drew me all the way in!!! So entertaining with fantastic dialogue, action (murder, detective work, logic/reasoning, butterflies, taxidermy, royalty drama, high tension, friendship, etc., etc.), and the two lead characters are far ahead of their time! The setting is 1887 London.
I 🫶 All Souls Trilogy! I've lost count just how many times I have read the books since it was released. I've watched the series, just as many times! It was hosted on Sundance, but I think AMC carries it now...may be both?! Perhaps another viewing is in order 🙃 I thought it was a wrap for the books, too! Very exciting that a new installment is on the way 🥳
29:23 reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane atm! by neil gaiman. the illustrated ver by elise hurst bc thats the version my uni's bookshop was selling (it's beautiful). ngl i haven't picked it up in ages bc uni and other priorities 😭😭😭 but it's really good so far!! cozy aesthetic vibe
So happy for you finding planner peace for so lang, I know the struggle! Really glad I'm still loving my TNs with Sterling Ink inserts and am dreading the day the struggle hits😅
As for reading: I am firmly commited to spicy romantasy. Fourth Wing is still on my mind all day every day (mainly because of Storm in the Quiet on AO3), but I also already want to reread ToG even though I only read it for the first time in january😂. Carissa Broadbent is also sooo good, but I was really disappointed in Raven Kennedys Plated Prisoner Series. The quality of the writing and story telling felt just so much simpler and that in a bad way. It felt like reading a middle grade book😮. Now I am diving into Jennifer L. Armentrouts Blood and Ash series (read the first two, starting the third today) and I really like them so far.
So I guess TL,DR on romantasy: recommend Fourth Wing (+ fanfiction!), ToG, Carissa Broadbent and Jennifer L. Armentrout; skip: Raven Kennedy
Love your Videos, have a great week❤
That Romeo + Juliet cd was my favorite when it came out!! The Radiohead track on that one is an absolute fave ❤ I hope it is a wonderful little afternoon when you get to hear it!
A really great thriller I would recommend is “First Lie Wins” it’s a nice palette cleanser in between huge fantasy books.
The last book I finished was Uprooted by Naomi Novik and it was wonderful! She has a very fairy tale whimsical writing style. Just started Leigh Bardugo's The Familiar and I'm loving it so far!
I’m dyslexic, and it takes me longer to read a book than the average person. But I’ve been enjoying “Lasher” by Anne Rice. It’s the second book to The Mayfair Witches series. I also have seasonal depression in the summer. And I’ve recently moved into the attic, so that my aunt, who is disabled, could have my old room on the main floor. I know exactly what you’re talking about with the heat in the attic. I’m sick of it already.
Love the new planner cover ❤ I’ve just tried a cover with Krause rings and they are so good, and so easy to swap
I have summer seasonal depression too, but I’m living in Australia at the moment so it’s autumn now, hope the summer is kind to you
i’m currently reading Ordinary Monsters by JM Miro-it has gloomy vibes that I think you’d enjoy! I also recently read A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal which, tbh, you’d probably also like. It felt like Six of Crows but with vampires? not as good as six of crows obviously but it was up there for sure.
I’m also going to plug two of my favorite trilogies of all time! The Montague Siblings trilogy by Mackenzi Lee just holds such a special place in my heart. The characters are so wonderful and it’s such a dramatic and adventurous world that also reminds me that things are going to be okay
I am reading three different books, depending om what mood I am in. Firstly is mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, secondly Monday or tuestay by Virginia Woolf, and lastly the Illiad by Homer. My fav books so far this year are misery by Stephen King (first book i've read of him and i cannot stop thinking about it) and The priory of the orange tree by Samantha Shannon.
The new cover you have is beyond pretty
I'm currently reading The Saint of Bright Doors, and I'm not that far in but I'm enjoying it so far and the blurb sounds *very* promising
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT - there's a new all souls book coming out?!!!!! best news of the day
I am reading Tea for Ghosts right now and although it wasn't what I expected I am really loving it. Want to finish it to read Babel though
Really enjoyed this episode! I’m currently reading the Zodiac Academy series.
i’m about halfway through godkiller by hannah kaner, and i’ve really liked it so far! i’ve also been catching up on the adventure zone graphic novels (crystal kingdom and the eleventh hour)
Your videos are a comfort as always, thank you Megan.
I'm reading The Republic of Thieves, which is the third book in the Gentlemen Bastard series (The Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Seas under Red Skies)
Because i’m revising i’m mainly listening to audiobooks but the one i’m listening to right now is agatha christie death on the nile. It’s really good. I usually prefer her miss marple pieces but some poirot ones are really good too.
I'm really happy you're so at peace as to be boring to some. That's truly the goal in life. 😊🖤
As for books: I'm reading DUNE 3, The Familiar, and The Last Graduate (Book 2 Scholomance series).
Dune 3: the children of Paul have to face the consequences of their father's action. Also, the full extent of why toxic boy moms are bad. If Lady Jessica has no haters, I am dead. It's a great series, honestly. If you're into sci-fi, dive in!
The Familiar: delightfully written prose about magic in inquisition Spain. it's giving Catholic hunger games, and I'm Mexican so I relate to the vibe a lot. It's comfortable despite also being full of despair and tension.
The Last Graduate: [disclaimer, I'm reading it in Spanish]. The characterization is a beautiful inversion of classical hero's journey tropes. At this point I've grown deeply attached to characters and have a strong love for my protagonist and her love interest. The allegorical representation of race and income inequality might be too on the nose for anyone deeply fatigued with real life, but I love the defiance of the cast in the face of their adversity. Also, I do appreciate that my favorite edge lords are being called out for being edge lords. It IS that serious, but it's not that serious.
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon is totally captivating me rn and I love knowing I have a good 3-4 books more in the series to get lost in 🥰
I'm sure you've seen this being recommended before, but i just finished My Year of Rest and Relaxation and it was soo good. Sleep is a big part of it so maybe you'd find it interesting!
I just finished The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo, really liked it 10/10 recommend 🤗(genre is fantasy, historical fiction)
I think you’d really like Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher. It’s a short fantasy book that very much has Bog Vibes and other themes of contentment with oneself.
I’ll second the recommendation for Emily Wildethat I saw in the comments- I just finished the second one and am enjoying the series. I don’t usually like epistolary novels/I find that format difficult to get into. I didn’t have a problem with Emily Wilde.
Also: the main character is very autistically coded (to me at least) and I thought it was well done.
Watership down 😂 I love it X and also reading dopesick by Beth macy
I have long enjoyed The Expanse tv show and recently started reading it. It's sci-fi, but many characters, diversity and a very interesting storyline.
i'm currently reading the girl from rawblood by catriona ward which i'm struggling a bit with just from the writing style but i really liked the author's other books so i want to try to wait it out
i recently finished red side story which is the sequel to the book shades of grey by jasper fforde, it's about a society thats classes are designated by what colours one can see, and i really loved it
I started listening to Bullet Train by Kōtarō Isaka. I wanted to read it before watching the movie adaptation. I'm really enjoying it so far! It has such a fascinating tone.
(Also, I get summer depression too! July is so tough for me.)
I'm currently reading "Great Expectations" 🤡 and enjoying it tbh, also recently read "The boy who followed Ripley", a fourth book in the Ripley series and it was great
I just finished The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and it was soooo good. I also highly recommend The long way to a Small Angry Planet (Wayfarer series) it's a cozy sci-fi
I’ve been slowly reading Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. A little odd, not bad, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. It’s my first Vonnegut book I’m reading so maybe he’s just like that. Intrigued by that book about bogs and peatlands, I think I’ll give it a look. I would recommend Gathering Moss by RWK, if you like books about nature that feel like prose and storytelling at the same time as being informative (but I know other people have recommended it before so I’m sorry if you’re tired of hearing that lol😅)
Not current, but a cozy favorite - Arthur Machen's many good stories. ❤
I’m reading the hemlock queen by Hannah whitten rn I am enjoying the continuation of the last book in the series
Love the new video! I am currently reading The Door by Magda Szabó, the writing is incredible and the story is surprisingly very captivating, definitely not my typical book to read but still very good so far!
Hey! I would love to see a room tour ❤️
i tend to have a couple of books going at once. i'm reading book of night (but kinda struggling with it tbh, feels a bit of a chore, so don't know if i'd recommend, i'm re-listening to the sherlock holmes stories on audio book and i'm also reading john e. douglas' book, mindhunter
Adam holding the lil iPod shuffle :D
Great video! I have been reading a series of cook books this season ! Mostly Julia Childs and Alice Waters
Ive started a few books. Currently reading people from my neighborhood and oranges are not the only fruit.
I'm currently reading Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. It's my first book by him and it's been quite fun.
hilarious to me that people are bored of your content just because you've stuck to the filofax for 6 months 😂 anyway, your custom cover looks beautiful!
i recently read dave grohl's memoir "the storyteller" and i really enjoyed it! he really is a good storyteller & his positive outlook was very inspiring to me. i just started "the mermaid of black conch" by monique roffey, but i'm only a few pages in, so don't know what i think of it yet. i just thought the premise was good & the cover i got (the vintage earth paperback edition) is gorgeous!
I just finished a little life and now I’m reading Frankenstein :)
i’m currently reading the last stretch of war and peace after a couple of months of making my way through it
I just finished Chain Gang All-Stars. Fantastic book.
I'm currently reading Our Share of Night by Marina Enriquez, definitely check the trigger warnings on it.
I would recommend; Bloom by Delilah S Dawson, Cultish by Amanda Montell, and Loveless by Alice Oseman
oooo yes I love Alice Oseman’s books! I'm currently reading Solitaire ☺️
I'm currently reading The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake, but just before that I read Normal People by Sally Rooney and Sweet bitter by Stephanie Danler.
Also as for books: I am about to start reading Someone Who Isn't Me by Geoff Rickly from the band Thursday. I recently also finished Burn You The F* Alive by B.R. Yeager which I enjoyed!
oooh your nails are beautiful! 🥰
SDV is such a comforting game. I’m so sad that the update for consoles has not been released. But I understand. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have a computer, so no mods for me 😢
I'm currently reading The Fellowship of the Ring (part one in the LOTR series) it's a fantasy adventure and I highly recommend The Hobbit, it definitely worth the hype :) I also recently read A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers. I think it's described as cozy science fiction (?), it's a heart warming story and has a robot character learning about the world (which is something I'm personally a fan of lol)
not me getting overly excited at seeing our bbgirl astarion
i recently read and really enjoyed a dowry of blood and an education in malice both by s.t. gibson. very atmospheric vampire stories with great relationships and character development. if you want something a little less gothic the molly the maid series by nita prose is great, the mc is autistic and she solves mysteries in her hotel, it's a lot of fun.
i've been getting more into sherlock holmes lately and i would be really interested to hear your thoughts on the original stories and what reimaginings you like. i'm listening to the hound of the baskervilles while i knit and it's really interesting to compare it to the tv show and movie versions i've seen. i would love to see more of your special interest collections, i feel like i could get a lot of good recs from you!
Hiii, I was wondering if you’re still playing with your tamagotchi? I’m considering buying one for myself 🤭
Hello ~
hope you've been well
The series is wonderful, so beautifully written! Also gripping and fantastic, and heartbreaking and heartwarming and about books. One of my all-time favourites!... 🥰🥰🥰
I love your system and your inserts! Would you ever consider making them in different sizes? I use a half letter discbound so would love them in half letter
Also I am currently reading The woven kingdom and really enjoying it
I think I might be late to the game but I LOVED Andy Serkis' narration of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He does an _amazing_ job!!!
Murder outside the lines, by Krista Davis. Murder mystery/ghost story at Halloween in Georgetown (D.C). 🎃 Enjoying it!
Currently reading The Book of Love by Kelly Link. It's so strange and so beautiful and I'm really enjoying it so far.
I'm reading The Poppy War by RF Kuang, really enjoying it so far!
I'm currently reading Losing Eden: Why Our Minds Need the Wild by Lucy Jones and it's fantastic so far.
