- Did homosexuality kill the dinosaurs? You might think you know the answer, but consider the perspective of the weird early 90s sitcom Dinosaurs, featuring giant Jim Henson puppets that tackled timely topics like war and drugs and racial prejudice - and yes they even had an episode with a thinly veiled metaphor for homosexuality, and parents who overcome intolerance.

I saw a pro-vegetarian message when this aired. My mom saw an anti-drug special. We never figured it was a gay episode parody. I think it is just a parody of as many very special episodes as possible.
If it were an anti-drug message, that would mean the dinner where they had a mix of veggies and meats would be like saying some illegal drugs are ok some times.
Well... I guess that checks out. Go mom!
I'd argue that it's less of a parody and more of a deconstruction (but even that's not 100% on point). Either way tye general applicability to a wider number of social "problems" makes it surprisingly modern, even if it causes the metaphor(s) to break down a bit.

Yeah that would have been good
My first thought was... if you eat veggies time to time... sounds like bi.
Well, Spartacus already made a similiar connection back in 1960.
Marcus Licinius Crassus:
Do you consider the eating of oysters to be moral and the eating of snails to be immoral?
Antoninus:
No, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus:
Of course not. It is all a matter of taste, isn't it?
Antoninus:
Yes, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus:
And taste is not the same as appetite, and therefore not a question of morals.
Antoninus:
It could be argued so, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus:
My robe, Antoninus. My taste includes both snails and oysters.
In the 90's the heteronormative mainstream (#patriarchy) used the word "gay" obliquely for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community (like some still do today).
Interesting points here. I wonder if the show makers thought about it to this extent. Considering it's a comedy... I'm not sure.
When will there be a film about the gay dinosaur hunting couple climbing mountains and escaping bandits in Transalvania?!
The whole kidnapping situation is just perfect. I can picture them ready to escape.
"Right. On the count of three. One... two... Do you hear gunshots?"
"I hear someone screaming."
"I recognise that screaming."
"It sounds like you father."
"That is definitely my father. God, I haven't heard him that angry since I was 14 and..."
"And what?"
"Never mind."
"I'll ask your father about it later."
"Please don't. He's got a gun."
"That bad, huh? So should we still try to break out or..."
"I think he's got this."

I wonder if the swamp monster is a metaphor for intolerance and toxic masculinity, hence why it causes the son to disappear while his father can’t accept him, and also why it finds male-on-male affection gross. Only when the father dives into his own intolerance can he see the harm he’s actually done to his family, and what he needs to do to fix it.

I guess a more optimistic view of "two men hugging makes the monster puke" is "destroying toxic masculinity by expressing emotions freed them".
The red scare and lavender scare reference actually made sense, in the executive order made to purge communists from the government there was a clause that basically posited that gays could be communists because their sexuality made them vulnerable to blackmail and therefor treachery. Over 500 federal employees were fired and employees were asked "are you a homosexual." Additionally, the more well-known gay rights organization, The Mattachine Society, was started by someone who had communist ties. So during that era, public perception of communism and gayness were very intertwined because they both represented a secretive "invisible" enemy.

Since making this video I've heard from multiple people who were asked that when joining the Army! It's wild that that would even be asked. Reminds me of how, when my dad enlisted in the 1960s, they asked him point-blank if he was Jewish, and when he said yes they assigned him to an all-Jewish unit. Incredible.

As a kid that chose vegetarianism at a young age in an omnivore home I completely thought this episode was exclusively about vegetarianism . I really enjoyed this show thank you for the dissect.
The detour into McCarthyism references makes sense. Ever since the first Red Scare came to the US about 100 years ago, anti-communism, anti-Marxism, anti-leftism in general has been an extremely useful disguise for all manner of other bigotries, because it's 100% acceptable among both conservatives and liberals in our society to be anti-leftist. It's trivially easy for reactionaries to frame any specific bigotry they hold as _actually_ an opposition to communism. For example, the struggle for Black Liberation currently playing out on the streets across the US: how often do you see right-wing propagandists describing BLM as Marxist? Struggles against the oppression of racial, sexual, and gender minorities are attributed to "the Marxist myth of ubiquitous equality," because anyone who's not a communist knows minorities are _not_ equal, so their oppression is natural and good.
It's true, those 1950s scares are pretty intersectional. I didn't want to go TOO much into detail because they're all so intertwined, it's easy to make that history confusing. There might be a Culture Cruise about McCarthyism and the lavender purge in the future though.

I think the male affection making the giant dinosaur vomit works quite well, in that the giant dinosaur represents the old order :)
Exactly! It's on message with the anti-homophobia moral of the episode.
Agreed
I honestly don't think the metaphor is murky, it's just not an allegory about one thing in particular.
The communism-/drug-/hippie metaphor is just the societal framework. Conservatives always throw homosexuality into one big mush of "lefty soy latte-drinking liberalism", which in turn is embraced by a liberal counterculture as a sign of solidarity. Robbie, torn apart between the poles, then makes a speech that no one should care that much about his "feeding identity", but about his worth as an individual.
I watched Dinosaurs as a kid but I was still too little to properly remember it and I never knew how it ended until today, I feel a little sad now.
This Franz guy sounds super interesting, the things you learn on the culture cruise will never cease to amaze me.

I'm trans woman and I've seen many depictions from the eighties, nineties an beyond of of male protagonists literally vomiting or at least gagging when they find out that attractive woman was "a man" all along. Reactions of disgust are not great. in this case though, the idea that the embodiment of toxic masculinity is defeated or overcome by men talking about their feelings, coming to an understanding and hugging each other. I don't know it might be cool. But it depends on how you interpret it.
except if you are dating someone, you should be upfront about yourself regarding your gender vs biological sex.

I don’t mind that ending, honestly. Seeing that the monster stands in for “bigger” in the dad’s worldview, I also kind of read him as more conservative than the dad too. While the dad is willing to soften his beliefs and, in turn, show male affection, the even more conservative monster who won’t change finds it disgusting. Feels pretty appropriate to me.
The dad joined an all men group to “eat meat”. Their ritual was literally “eating” another dinosaur. I’m not sure if the connotations where different in the 90s or if universal bisexuality was the social norm in their society

I feel that this episode is half a parody of every very special episode, while also trying to tell parents and kids that it's okay to be....something (noncommittal)
I vaguely remember the show as I was a toddler when it aired so I saw reruns when I was slightly older that aired on Disney. So I only remember the last episode which is pretty great but clearly no one with power cared. I grew up in the 80s/90s in Midwest USA and had friends who were vegetarians for moral reasons, much to their parent's chagrin. Vegetarianism made them an embarrassment to their parents, the black sheep of the family, meaning this episode's plot is literal and not a metaphor in that case. More generally this episode seems to be about not being afraid to challenge tradition or question the norm, if you have strongly held beliefs to the contrary, even though you might upset people you care about.
it's actually sort of cool to see old shows like this with representation. i can imagine being a kid back then and really seeing myself in this, and feeling actually acknowledged. heck, even growing up in the 2000's i barely had that.
