If the Germans attacked them in 1940, it would have been suicidal. The French army/British army at the time was larger than the Germans, and the French Char B1s had bigger guns and armor than the German Panzers. There were also anti aircraft guns, from 20mm to higher caliber. It was in itself, an inpenetrable fortress.
I seem to remember the whole thing had an underground train track running through it too for ammunition? Was seriously strong IRL.. just didn't stretch far enough!
