The mix does suck which might have impacted their performance a bit (typical 'safe for radio' bs) but after another listen I'm still sold on watching them live, in a sweaty dive bar where I hope the sound reverberation blow's my head off.

Let's face it; for over 40 years the BBC has excelled in the art of killing any live rock stone dead. I think they should have given up after the first couple of runs of Whistle Test (which are probably better remembered through a smoky haze than actually revisited, anyway).

+Mark Hutchinson I've seen plenty of gigs covered by the BBC over the years that were great. Whistle Test was great too, that was literally just turn up and play.

sounds like a DI from the guitar, pre effects, they sound really weak compared to other live shows. Bad sound engineering!

Oh dear. Sleater Kinney are clearly not for you. Maybe Emerson Lake and Palmer would be a better fit?

Carrie just can't carry vocals for me. She's not a singer, so should be on backing at the most. Corin has the pipes and really should be letting us hear them instead of yet another song where she just harmonises with Carrie. Corin doesn't do the complex guitar riffs, because she's the worse of the two guitarists, but someone told Carrie she can sing at some point, which is a shame, because she can't.

I disagree, I think Carrie has quite a unique voice and her added vocals is essential to the sound of Sleater-Kinney. However I can agree this isn't her strongest performance but the entire sound is off and I don't think it is the bands fault. I suggest you watch NPRs cover of a gig they did, it's great:)

Sophie Williams Mainly I just think they should leave vocals to Corin. She has the demonstrably superior voice. I'm a big fan of S-K but I do think there are some that deliberately overlook how bad Carrie's singing sometimes is, even on the records. Early on, they used her in vocals sparingly, in fast-paced songs like The Professional (which she can do), or only to harmonise. It's the same reason we don't get Janet-led vocals - she's a backing/support singer at best, not a lead vocalist. I do think Carrie's voice could be vastly improved with some simply breathing and voice coaching, much the same way Corin did in the late 90s (she was given training and coaching that allowed her to better breathe and thus not be quite so 'breathy' on the more difficult vocal sections of S-K songs). Corin's voice has changed and improved over the years whereas Carrie sounds the same on The Woods as she does on No Cities to Love.

But look at One Beat vs The Woods/No Cities. There was a definite shift in Carrie's vocals, which she brings to live performances of "Oh!", most notably. Her sound is very deliberate.
I think the "essential" S-K sound is their voices together.
OK, here's another example that carries a little better - listen to Future Crimes. That song isn't "missing" Corin (although I think she would have sung the last verse if it was an S-K song). Carrie can't push a melodic song forward very well, but it's not that she should be a back-up singer to Corin - it's that if she's singing lead, it better be a rough-around-the-edges song like "Entertain." "A New Wave" doesn't fully hold up to that standard, but they're the musicians, here - they get to decide.

it's strange because I actually prefer Carries voice to Corins. I appreciate Corins voice because she's very talented and her vocals bring a rawness to Sleater-Kinney but Carries voice is unique and special, you can hear the emotion and dedication in her voice. Sometimes singing doesn't have to be about being good or not, I enjoy plenty of bands who's lead singers don't actually have a nice tone to their voice but the lyrics and the emotion in the song makes it amazing. Carrie has actually admitted on a few occasions that she didn't have a nice voice but can stay in tune, and I think that's what makes it better, she loves to sing so nothing will stop her. Her first band Excuse 17 she is the lead singer, and in her side project band Wild Flag she is the lead singer. Corins voice has changed yes but she isn't as strong live now as she was back in the 90s, like every singer over time their voice wears significantly, this is possibly why they use Carries vocals more now because of Corins vocals wearing. I understand that Carries vocals is not everyone's taste but I think you're looking at it in a way where everyone agrees with you, which in fact is not the case:)

    • @RosemarieRadford

Mmmm I think Carrie sang more on No Cities because of how well "Modern Girl," "Entertain" and "Jumpers" did. They're the core of The Woods, and killer songs. Carrie has always written for Corin's voice, but I think they started pushing Carrie as a lead in The Woods, and it paid off.
I mean, Carrie's always sung lead in S-K for a few songs, obviously. Maybe we're just making this all up, and "A New Wave" is a re-imagining of "How to Play Dead." That's probably it.

They’re good live. But Carrie is terrible at guitar, I’m sorry.
