Definitely way more adventurous than Hera, way more adventurous than probably most others. You're always uploading new and wacky strategies that you think of on the spot to fight a specific battle and matchup, after all. You're the one guy I remember was using ballista elephants to their full potential when everyone thought they were useless.
Not much of a Twitch viewer so the start of this video was probably some of the most I’ve seen of Viper seriously and thoroughly giving an answer to chat. Was super cool to hear his thoughts more than just it depends
One reason I still love watching Viper is because he seems to be the only one trying something outside the meta, but I feel like I'm the only one who feels the unit balance in AoE2 is still lacking. Almost every game is archers (sometimes a few skirms) or scouts and then if that civ has an effective UU, use it in the Castle/Imp Ages, otherwise stick to archers and cavalry (unless infantry civ). It just gets boring tbh. Infantry seems to be overshadowed regularly in every age unless a few spears in defence or a small MAA harassment early on. The entire gunpowder line is basically a meme and one of their only viable units Conqs were nerfed some time ago with their armour changes. Elephants are too vuln to priests and anti-cav units. Scorps are only made if there's a civ bonus and late game heavy siege only seems to appear in team games. Instead of adding more civs every year, they could add more variety by simply making more units viable in more situations, especially hand cannons!
I greatly agree. I rarely see MAA being used after early feudal and it's even worst for long swordsmen. I feel infantry are in general just too slow and vulnerable for the current meta.
@@XegaZero a simple solution is giving 1 melee armor to long swords. Would simply make them more viable vs knights which is their main issue. Idk why this obvious change has never been made
True, especially in the Arabia map. The issues is that at medium high level the micro of archer Is too important. Besides you start to create archer at feudal age, so it is more easy to mass them and upgrade them. For the other units Is more difficult and their micro Is less profitable. The gunpowers come at late stage of the game and cost Gold, when It Is already low. I think that in other maps the differences are less.
Well, early feudal, MAA have no counter. The real issue is lancasters law, that 3 longswords statistically might compete with a knight, but when each one dies, the longswords lose damage output, whereas the knight is outputing 10 damage the entire time.
I think it is normal that strategy options get fewer and fewer as the skill level goes up so you end up having to play meta if you want to win. What I find absurd is the number of pro streams, educational youtube channels, guides and stuff like that. It’s being given away for free, knowledge has no value anymore since everyone knows stuff. Everybody is trying to imitate the pro players in their own games and copying their build orders. So there is nothing left to explore and learn about the game as almost everyone knows how this game works so all you see is the same meta units and same meta strats every single game, even in the lower elos. Sometimes I miss the old days when players used to come up with unusual, creative and sometimes silly strats and still making it work because the opponent wouldn’t know how to react to it. Nowadays everyone knows what to do and how to react in every situation. It’s really boring to both play & watch but I guess that’s the fate of every competitive game.
I was surprised recently to learn how young Hera is that he's only like 20. Makes sense why he's such a try-hard and always desperately trying to beat Viper. Still funny watching Viper screw with him and pull out some crazy move like mass siege ram with Slavs and seeing Hera just scanning his screen in utter shock and disbelief at how it ever came to this hahahaha!
@@btarczy5067 of course. Every pro is a “tryhard” otherwise they wouldn’t be pro. But viper at least has fun streams/RUclips videos that aren’t strictly about perfect BOs and game analysis. Mans chillin
Use the market to go early up to castle age after a man-at-arms opening. That time that he achieved is similar to people who go fc on arena and spend no resources on military until they are on the way up, and Viper spent resources on three m@a and a couple of spearmen, and the m@a-upgrade. that's 300+ food, 100 gold, ~200 wood (barracks and spears) that he did not invest into aging quick, and he still managed to get a sick time.
The opponent went "full feudal" in response to Viper's Fast Castle because he'd be so far behind in castle age time it made sense to just stay in feudal in hope of punishing Viper for clicking up early. Unfortunately he didn't do enough damage. He had a window of time to try and overwhelm Viper before enough castle age units got on the field that feudal age units can't compete. Since it didn't work he resigned knowing that the more time passed the worse it'd get.
@@giacomov.5120 I think the maps in HC favoured aggressive play, and that is why I think Saracens would work. But maybe they are less aggressive than Arabia?
@@japphan yes, i was not clear: some of the maps were aggressive, but not in the same way of arabia. Arabia is open, the enemy Is near, few gold. Instead the maps of hc have also other feature: water, some obstacles, more Gold, some bigger. However i'm not so expert, maybe there are other reasons.
A lot of pro players now view them as just outside the very top civs after the siege bow nerfs. It's possible the meta is still developing with them and will eventually rise again, but it shouldn't be that surprising considering siege bows were what defined them and made them scary so even with a slight buff to camels they're going to have a drop in popularity. Camels are pretty situational and are in no way comparable to how popular and effective archers are. Not that camels are bad units but especially when you're playing aggressively often you'd rather have knights.

You sold 100 wood, 200 stone and bought 600 food before clicking castle age. You saved 248 gold as compared to other civilizations.
