Hikaru and Kaoru's arc of extreme codependence to opening up their worlds to others and Tamaki and Kyoya's friendship backstory is one of the aspects of this show will definitely always hit me like it did the first time. It has only been about 2 years since I last saw it and was 14 and now im 16. Of course a lot has changed but maybe i'll revisit it when im in my 20s and figure out if it still hits me as much but one thing that remains is that this show did so so much for me the first time I watched it

As much as I love Ouran High School Host Club, it is what I consider an incomplete show because the anime didn’t manage to adapt the full story from the original manga. What makes this sting more is that the manga continues to develop each member of the host club further and shows them growing and coming into their own, as well as show the culmination of Tamaki and Haruhi’s relationship. Although it is very unlikely, I wouldn't mind Ouran getting a reboot series or a second season to continue adapting these stories and allowing fans who haven't read the manga to continue witnessing each of the characters develop as individuals, their camaraderie as a club/family, and the surprising twists and turns one might not expect from only watching the 26 episodes from the show.

I also recently rewatched OHSHC out of Nostalgia. As a lesbian i remember it being one of the first puzzle pieces for me to understand that I’m gay. Like it isn’t as progressive and fails to do the bare minimum but when I was 11 or 12 it reflected my perception of gender and sexuality and made me happy to see Haruhi not only defy gender norms but have a platonic friendship with the others. A lot of media I consumed regarding romance was so toxic and heteronormative so it was kind of the first self insert storyline I did and young me didn’t realize that it’s not straight to want to dress up as a boy just to kiss a girl-
I’m cisgender so obv it spoke to other aspects of my identity and sadly didn’t give me a healthy wlw depiction but I’m still happy it exists.
The only thing I was really disappointed in was that in the manga (I didn’t read it back then only recently) Haruhi is dressed only femininely and grows her hair out after they are done with the host club. I know that non-binary ppl can dress however is suitable for them but I thought it was a bummer that after all this time Haruhi goes back to how she was before. Just her saying a small thing about her gender again (perhaps if her perception changed idk) or develop a style outside of gender expectations would’ve been kinda nice to see as it would show that certain identities aren’t phases.

    • @theassortedhobbyist
      @theassortedhobbyist 2 года назад +28

Haruhi does say that she doesn’t care if someone thinks she is either a boy or a girl, but she does define herself as a girl. Outside of host club activities, she is mostly wearing more feminine attire, so it’s not too much of a stretch to me that she would continue to do so after graduation as well as grow out her hair. Granted, I do think the short haircut is more her style though. I can totally see Haruhi written/portrayed as non-binary nowadays and if Ouran was made in today’s age, it could’ve lead to a lot of potentially interesting stories about the host club learning different gender identities.

at the end of the manga when it shows a lot of flash-forward stuff with the characters in the future, haruhi is actually shown with a variety of hair lengths that don't correlate to one instance of growing it out, so it's actually more likely that she just alternates hairstyles. growing it out and then cutting it short and then growing it out again and then cutting it short again, etc, which imo is pretty realistic for a lot of people who don't really care about gender presentation. considering they even showed that sort of variety over time at all makes me reluctant to file haruhi away into the "masc female character inexplicably girly-ified after the plot" box like other similar characters

Hello. I am a 32 year old trans woman in the year 2022 who openly lists Ouran Highschool Host Club as my #2 all time favorite, right behind Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. Yeah there are troublesome bits in it but frankly they have never bothered me. At all. Because I know they don’t come from a place of hate but instead a less sophisticated time and less accurate period of localization. Especially with words that just don’t have a proper English translation that can be taken to be good or bad. It’s NOT good and shouldn’t be forgiven per se, but I’m not gonna let it ruin my enjoyment of the series otherwise, especially considering it was not intended.

They are a lot of things lost in the anime about Haruhi and tamaki, specially because the romance starts when the anime ends. In general they make each other better and being together make them grown. Tamaki is a beautiful hopeless romantic that is weird but a incredible good person, no matter how bad people treat him he always wants happiness for everyone, haruhi, who actually loves nice people, can see behind his weird and snobby superficial self and find the most caring and loving human being they can imagine. Haruhi learns that even people they think they hate can be incredible good people. Tamaki is the one who grows the most, he learns what really means to be in love, he learns how to love someone as independent as haruhi, he let them go to study.

I was just graduated when I saw OHSHC. Harhuhi was one of the first protagonists I really empathized with, because of how she treated the boys. She acknowledged they were beautiful and such, but that alone wasn't what attracted her to them. She liked them for who they were, and got closer to them over time. I also empathized with Tamaki's confusion about his feelings. Yes he was an idiot and weirdly possessive, but confusion about platonic, paternal, and erogenous love is something I still struggle with. Kyouya's warning is also a scene I look back on fondly, beleive it or not. I'm not conventionally attractive, and I look down on most female-coded behavior, so I'd never been hit on. Yes, I made it through K-12 with no romantic experience. It had never occurred to me that someone might try to take advantage of me, just because I was a girl. Yeah, it's a little cringey, but honestly, that lesson stuck, and saved my beef a few times as I went to college and was exposed to actually nasty people for the first time.
Maybe it's a bad thing, but this was one of the shows that allowed me to better understand how relationships work for different people. It certainly clarified the difference between Aesthetic and Sexual attraction for me. I like to revisit the show from time to time to think over those experiences and revelations, and I think everyone should watch it at least once.

I don’t think anyone talks about this but I’ve always found it a little hard to sympathize with Kyoya’s position because of Fuyumi. I mean, I’m not in any way saying that Kyoya’s position and the way he’s treated his okay, but like, in the show (and a lot of the time in real life) most women, no matter what their place in the family is, have less of a chance than Kyoya does at succession their parents company, simply because their women. Tamaki’s speech to Kyoya in episode 24 not only acknowledges that the situation was rigged against him from the start for simply being the 3rd son, (something he had no control over and is being unfairly punished for) but implies that if he worked hard enough he could achieve it. That’s not the same energy we get when it comes to how women are treated, even when it’s essentially the same situation. Both Kyoya and Fuyumi are at an unfair disadvantage for something they never had a say in, but it’s only acknowledged in the show it’s Kyoya. The possibility of Fuyumi being a successor was never even brought up, and I guess we’re supposed to think that she’s happy in her position, even when Kyoya’s whole backstory is based off of the fact that he is being treated unfairly, and has suffered his whole life because of that.

Okamas are sadly still used as the butt of a joke, even in every day media. And gay marriage only became legal recently in Japan. Obviously I could be wayyy off base and the author was just like lmao daddy jokes but idk it’s always kinda made sense to me w how much of an oblivious idiot he is most of the time.

You're not as far off base as you think. One of Tamaki's dreams is having both him, his parents, and his grandmother together sitting at a kotatsu because to him it symbolizes a strong healthy family connection. He views the host club as a found family and while that is very sweet and it shows how much he cares for them, it is just another highlight of his immature nature that keeps him oblivious from what he truly feels for Haruhi. Hikaru even calls Tamaki out for this, trying to get him to understand that the bond and friendship the club share will not be broken if Tamaki decided to pursue a romantic relationship with Haruhi.

this series genuinely means so much to me and its one of my favourite anime series.
Not because of how it displays gender or any such "progressive" ideas because yeah, they did good stuff with Haruhi, but there was also extreme transphobia with Ranka and the lesbophobia in those two episodes.....yeah
i love it because this show has ALWAYS made me _feel._ Haruhi's stuff with her mom and her hyper independence throughout the series plus the entire final act of the show, Hikaru and Kaoru's growth and the difference between their personal insights (eg: the episode where Hikaru and Haruhi go on a date and Kaoru explains why he created that situation plus Hikaru crying at the end of the ep after he apologises to Haruhi), Tamaki's backstory and how/why he created the host club and how his idea of this club basically saved the host club members and Kyoya's backstory and his relationship with Tamaki (that was the only thing in this show and one of the only in all of anime and manga that has made me ugly cry and sob while watching it).
Also as a side note, i like Tamaki and Haruhi well enough but i'll always stand by the fact that Haruhi/Hikaru and Tamaki/Kyoya should have been endgame without a doubt and those ships made the most sense to me throughout the series.

It could just be me, but I didn't get the impression that he ACTUALLY has a problem with queer people, he just doesn't want Haruhi to be gay because he wants her all to himself (which is still an issue on its own, just not the same one).
I honestly don't think he would have expressed homophobic views to the Zuka Club girls if he didn't see them as a "threat" or competition for Haruhi's attention and affection. When he thought Haruhi might have been a gay boy he didn't express any distaste or opposition. It was only once he recognized Haruhi as a girl (and allowed himself to gradually acknowledge attraction to her) that he started wanting to separate "girl Haruhi" from homosexuality, out of possessiveness, rather than disdain for gay people.
That's how I took it anyway, myself being gay and non-binary (afab).

i recently watched ouran for the first time , and i loved it. i loved the humor and i thought the characters friendships were great. but some episodes i was like “how the fuck was this acceptable ?” (ex. the beach episode and how characters referred to haruhis dad in the dub)
the show has its problematic elements and is DEFINITELY a product of its time , but i enjoyed it overall.

An old friend recommended this anime to me back in 2014 when I was about 18 years old. This anime has a close place in my heart because that friend is no longer here in this world, she's in Ouranos. It made me wonder if she wanted acceptance, had she been part of a community that uplifts her like they do in the host club, would she still be here? This video brought back so many wonderful memories, thank you for sharing your perspective.

Ouran (as you may be able to tell) is very close to my heart. It was the first anime I ever watched all the way through, and one of a handful of shows that an old friend introduced me to to get me into anime back when I was twelve. I recognize it has its flaws, but I do still love it. The first time that I stepped into music room three, I was unsure. But I circled back a few months later and gave the host club a second chance, and they didn't disappoint.
Ouran is beautiful, with complex characters, but it's also not afraid to get more than a little silly. I'm eighteen now, and even though I think I've passed my peak Ouran obsession (like making it my username on every platform) there are a lot of memories I can look back on, like cheering for Haruhi the first time I saw that climactic scene in episode 26, or anxiously reciting the hosts names to distract my brain on a school trip.
I know Ouran has its faults, but it's dear to me, and I'll forever be a Kyoya fan first and a person second :)

I definitely understand where you're coming from with how it's weird Tamaki talks about Haruhi as his daughter and is possessive (due to that I think)
But I believe it comes from him lacking family dynamic growing up and the club became his family and he didn't have any examples of true romantic relationships - it was all just the show that he learned and put on for the club. He didn't understand his feelings for her were romantic and the want to protect, care, and love her came out as possessive because it was easier to understand caring for her like a daughter
Definitely doesn't justify it, but I think explains it

Something that I despise, as a lesbian, is the Lobelia girls and their academy. I can't watch the episode without feeling stereotyped. I wont go into a rant on how feminisim and radical feminism are very different, with one being good and something everyone should believe in, well the other being very bad. Throughout the show, the Lobelia girls are presented as radical feminists who believe women are above men and blah blah blah. As a child I had this mindset because I liked girls and that was the mindset all these girls in media were shown to have. As a teenager (16) I know realize how harmful that stereotype is. I will say though, it's good that lesbians in exist in media, but not those harmful stereotypes. If the term TERF existed back then, they would 100% be those.
Side note though, I do think what they did well was make the the Lobelia girls diverse in appearance. They are't these heavily masculine women, they're just women. Very sexist women, but not all butch women which is something.

I feel like part of why Haruhis dad may seem like is being played off as a joke is because he has the same energy as Tamaki. With Tamaki being a cis male it's just a character trait, but that trait applied to a gender non-conforming character is seen as mocking or making a joke of the character
Personally I just saw Haruhis dad as an energetic, spontaneous, and impulsive character just like Tamaki. But I understand how it may read differently due to the characters gender

i downloaded the sub of this show ages ago, and just use that if i want something for background noise. this is the first time i've ever heard the dub voices, it's surreal! also the sub never had any slurs against haruhi's dad, learning about the 't' slur being thrown around in the dub was also surreal. it seems kinda unnecessary to go out of your way to change the dialogue to where it would incorporate that, definitely transphobic since it most likely came from cis people. that being said the term itself doesn't bother me a whole lot, i've come across a fair handful of trans folks who've reclaimed it for themselves, and use it casually. same with a handful of gay people reclaiming the 'f' slur.

    • @offbeatkiki
      @offbeatkiki  2 года назад +4

i'm trans and bisexual and don't really think it's acceptable to have cishet characters use the T or F slur in media regardless of people reclaiming it - i agree it's very weird to add that in for the english dub, i want to check out the subbed version now as i've always seen the english dub with this specific show even though i typically am team subs

While I do get where you're coming from, there are points you bring I very much disagree a lot
    1. I think the ending was actually better than a lot of open ending series out there. It was very clear Tama and Haruhi will end up together, but we don't need to see it to know. Unlike the boring typical shoujo manga. Life is not something prefect, some things just happen in their own and I love it, actually. It gives us freedom for a change. And take it into consideration that the series isn't done while the anime series was airing, so they did what they could with what they had at the time.
    2. Tama and Haruhi Relationship and dynamic is actually great unlike so many bad shoujo manga and anime, boring/annoying girls in this genre is still the same to this day. they either too prefect or always need to be rescue from something. and Haruhi is not that! she is the one that will decide in this relationship, and if she does not want something, Tamaki will listen to her. it actually very healthy relationship unlike so many other series. and it is a relationship that make sense, like the epi that Tama acting just like her dad and she was happy and laugh at him. a lot of Relationship build like this, it reminds you of home in some way. and no I didn't care about the Beach episode.
if you actually read some shoujo manga you would have seen how toxic most of the main couple are in those stories. and there is a LOT.

Tamakis mom never “sold him”, Tamaki himself chose to leave France for Japan because his grandmother promised to take care of his mom (who was sick at the time and they couldn’t afford the medical care) as long as he agreed to her terms of coming to be the “heir” of the Suoh company and cutting off everybody and everything from his childhood in France. I think cause I read the manga, but even though anime Tamaki is so… annoying to put it bluntly (ESPECIALLY the dub version Vic Mignona is just so… 🤢) I have a soft spot for him cause of his background and the sadness he experience and how despite all that, he still forms bonds in Japan and goes out of his way to try and make everyone happy. Y’all the manga is just superior, I love the anime trust me, it’s the first real anime I ever watched, but I remember reading the manga after watching the show and I was genuinely so sad like “WHAT??? There’s so much mooooooore” that’s why I wish there was an anime remake that followed the manga more closely, i think it would have a love of potential
(Side note, I also like the live action and wish more people watched it too😔, i don’t know… i think it’s a good remake and adds something to it that gives you a hint of what a full manga adapted remake could be)
