The fact Island Schulz was trying to help her friend and never even saw that they were a threat to her is heartbreaking. Shooting someone in the back of the head who’s just invited you into their home and is in the process of trying to loan you money is monstrous to the extreme! RIP Island
I think Miss Schultz kind actions are exactly why they shot her in the back of the head without letting her see it coming. She wasn't begging for her life petrified with fear or in pain, it was done quickly and too their thinking it was most likely a form of mercy. The lady before her they forced to sit down and listen as the one brother egged on the other on to just shoot and kill her. Both deaths nevertheless tragic and sad indeed....

To those wondering about how the girls weren't very smart, etc. This was a small town. Everyone knew everyone. Add in to that a depressed economic area and meth hitting town three years prior. According to what I read up on, pretty much every kid in this town was doing meth, it was that prevalent at this point. The older murderer had lost his job, and the younger murderer had just graduated HS and had nothing, no job and felt he had no prospects. None of this excuses anything, obviously. But those two girls had no reason to *fear* either boy, and while they clearly knew something was shady...they didn't think it was anything actually *bad*. They didn't see how much they had, just that they had a lot of cash. The show left out that the 2 girls started questioning HOW MUCH CASH after Disneyworld because they were spending so much. At that point the boys told them they'd robbed a bank and killed two people. The girls freaked out, and wanted to go home. Both murderers had killed two women previously to eliminate witnesses. The one brother then calls his ex-girlfriend to see if they're wanted.
I think those two girls would've been killed but for the fact that they were already suspects, after all...they'd murdered twice before. The girls were foolish, yes...but had no reason to think it was anything so bad/horrifying. Plus, they were kids. And very lucky to be alive.
TLDR
Well the brothers were kids too and if they can be held accountable for their actions so can the girls. They should've started questioning this when the brothers showed up with a green pick up. You said yourself it's a small town and everyone knows everyone. Well then wouldn't the girls have known who the truck did belong to? Or at the very least know it didn't belong to the brothers? Which means they also had to have known their entire adventure was financed by the proceeds of crime. Maybe they didn't know exactly what crime had been committed but they had no problem spending the loot. They chose to be ignorant about what was happening until it wasn't fun anymore. Those girls aren't victims. They profited from the victims. At least I'm giving them some credit. You're basically saying they're just a couple of dumb country girls who don't know no better than to go on a cross country trip with two violent meth heads.
The real reason they stayed was
a. Drugs.
b. Lifestyle
c. The older brother was really good looking, like you would see in a print model magazine or something. Women do crazy things for a good looking face. Same with men.

Most likely, yes. But when you have a couple guys high on meth and armed? You never know. It could result in shooting and an officer being injured or killed. If you can resolve the situation by negotiating, why take the risk?

Why would a plea agreement ever be offered when they tell you they did it? 100% guilty. They slathered two woman. What does it take to get the death penalty? Skin them them alive?
The plea agreement is offered to save the (huge) cost of a trial. If they do not plead guilty, this would cost the county an enormous amount of money.
There is no death penalty in Iowa.
