56 here. Quit alcohol 20 months ago. Went low carb 10 months ago. Got back into weights 6 months ago more than ever. Doing deadlifts and pull-ups and other things I didn’t do before. I’m in incredible shape and lean now. All of they said, waking up in the morning is WAY harder than 20 years ago. Really feel my age for the first 2-3 hours of the day but get into a groove by noon.

Hello From Los Angeles ... 58 here .. started training hard 3 years ago. My friend it works!! We can build muscle in our 50s ... I have to keep reminding myself there is no finish line. This is how we live now .. we eat well, sleep well and work out. You end up standing out in a crowd too. Especially here just about every guy over 50 is over weight (and so was I). Look better, feel better and live better ... More power to you my brother.... get some!
I am 65 now, soon 66 and have just gotten back into weight training after a 40 year gap. Been following all of these videos exactly as they say, and I can tell you they do give results. After only about four weeks the results are very noticeable. Looking forward to what the end of the year brings. My 34" pants and shorts age getting real loose and can now wear 32" size.
@@aaronbarlow4376 Rofl, best comment ever. Man, i have big legs and it took me a while to find leg work outs that I could do. Squats and deadlifts were wrecking my knees. I get good enough results from leg press and squat machine, it was a hard pill to swallow giving up squats and dead lifts. The ass is what takes the hit when removing those from your workout. Its hard to replace that with leg kick back machine, the ass doesnt fill out the jeans like it use to lol.

Hey guys.... I live in Asia... I went back to the States after being away for 15 years... here's what I noticed : The TV commercials in between the reruns that my obese , younger than me now deceased sister after she got some type 2 diabetes on top of all her other issues would watch 24/7. There were either fast food commercials.... greasy , calories its tasty once in awhile but don't make it a habit. Then it was commercials like "Ask your doctor if (insert name that ends with x) is right for you , then in a sinister sped up voice " May cause dizziness , blackouts , irregular heart beat coma , suicidal thoughts...." I mean this really freak me out , they kill with shit food on one side , then kill you with pharma on the other ! While you pay them to do it ! The month I was there I gorged myself on Western foods that I missed... like a donut shop in the morning , double cheese burgers , apple pie , pizzas You name it... at the end of the month I was a fat slob... I couldn't believe I had arrived there. I remember bowel movements were messy and greasy and it's straight to the shower,,, no way wiping going to take care of that. The feeling of all this blubber ,it affected the way I move , my face started looking like John Candy towards the end... I never had gotten this way in my LIFE and thought I may be like that forever! I remember NOT liking it at ALL ! My ass barely fit in the airline seat on the trip back... seriously TOTALLY filled it, Totally a new experience that I DID NOT enjoy one bit. When I got back to Asia , I started eating local again.... much less meat , almost NO PROCESSED FOOD , very little dairy , very little processed sugar ... food is more like straight from the farm to the kitchen several fresh veggies with each meal , to your plate and it's delicious. You feel nourished not all clogged up. In about a months time I was back to my normal healthy weight.. no gym , no workout... lots of green tea very available here and water. Processed food , sugar... killed my sister along with booze... I warned her since the 80's no use. I started cycling for recreation and transportation... first couple months was a bit of a drag until I got to a certain level of fitness after that it was a BLAST and I still ride... keeps me trim and toned legs and butt...your lady will appreciate it. If you get a bike... get a good one that suits you... no suspension forks unless you off road.. you get an upper end bike.. you will WANT to ride it.... that's important and worth the extra bucks... anyway I hope I didn't babble on too much and this helps. It was a sobering and reflective experience for me.
Good for you for deciding to get back in shape. I highly recommend getting a testosterone test from your dr..if you have low t you still be put on testosterone And you will see a HUGE difference in your body, your weight training and libido as an extra bonus..good luck my brother.god speed!
Recovery time. I'm 76. For years I adhered to the 2 to 3 day recovery time. During this past year I've extended recovery time to 4 to 5 days. The reults in definition and muscle growth are remarkable. And of course an adequate protein intake.
I'm now 57 years old and retired after a 27 year career in the fitness industry (20 years of Personal Training), and I have to say this tutorial is bang on the nail. I couldn't have made it better myself. Each and every point I found myself nodding and smiling. Well done 👏🏻👍🏻
I don't no what you were watching, ....but this guy is an idiot.....everything he said is wrong for trainers over 50.....he is not educated in today's bodybuildering science. ....I've watched his other videos, ....they get worse,....he actually does a squat and calls it a deadlift.
You’re right about undertraining. When I first found your channel and others like Thenx before covid, I was really intense, and I was getting more results in a few months than I did in the past 20 years. Covid and my failure to sustain once the gyms closed really slowed me down. I lost a lot last year.
This information is absolutely ON POINT! By far, the best information and advice for men over 50. Admittedly, it gets frustrating trying to figure out our body after age 50 ... it's like its a totally different person. Good stuff, and keep it coming!
I'm 67, a retired cop and I've been in the gym my whole life. Even though I'm a certified personal trainer I often don't follow my own advice. This video reminded me that I'm guilty of some of these things especially neglecting legs. That stops tomorrow!
I get the leg part but what if you had seriously traumatic knee injuries when you younger and now have arthritis in both knees along with atrophy and nerve damage in my left quad. I’m only 38, I was an athlete growing up but I’m kinda fucked right now. All I can do is walk a lot & eat like a bird so I don’t get too chubby. Weight gain is horrible for knee problems too.
#6: cool down/stretching. Also, in regards to warm ups, find Wenning Strength’s Wenning warm ups. I am 51, been at this for 39 years, can still get 350 + on all big three(bench, squat, dead). I am very happy to have found this video.
Approaching 46 yrs old. I got back into lifting a few years ago after seeing a photo of myself. Shamed this old Marine into action. I sent this video to myself so I can watch and rewatch it. I've learned a lot over the past few years, these are the kind of videos I'm looking for.
I started working out at 55 which was last August. I am 56 now. I guess I was one of those guys that stayed relatively fit or at least looked fit. I finally got to having shoulder problems and I got the covid and that left me even more drained. So, I made a 180° turn and it was a great decision. I feel like I am in my 20's! Today in Texas we are under 10" of snow!
Theres your mistake pal ,lifting weights ,the best form off exercise after say 40 is calisthenics your own body weight , you can still achieve a fantastic body and without all the injuries you will get from lifting weights

I really love your channel especially on sprinting technique. I've been doing fast sprinting less than month now and my love handles went from handful to under 1". I didn't expected the fast results and was surprised my shirt don't have the usual bump near the belt line.

When starting out pushing hard increases the chance for injury, which will end your motivation quickly. It also causes soreness which is another barrier to motivation and developing a daily workout habit.
This guy is on time ! I'm a cyclist . Used to lift daily , then quit lifting when I hit 45 or so . gained 30 Lbs. that no amount of riding would take off . I'm 55 now . Started lifting again about 2 years ago. Incredible results . Dropped most of the extra belly fat in about 6 months. Not only did my club riding improve to the point that I can ride with a faster group , my cognition improved ! I just stumbled across this channel. Great information . At our age feeling and looking better is priceless. Keep up the good work !
Great advice. I'm also nearly 58 now, been involved in one sport or another most of my life...the thing to remember is to warm up real slow like you say, in a nutshell your workouts do take longer when you're older. Also, if I may add... Stretch, stretch, stretch after your workout. Plus...you can actually divide an intense workout over two days OR hit the same muscles again the next day for a couple of extra sets to gain muscle. Cheers!! Good luck to all!
Thanks for the great motivation. It was easy to train 20 years ago. I could lose weight and gain muscle at will. At 50....not so easy. I'm starting to fall apart but don't want to let it happen. I have a 1 year goal of how I want to look and feel. This is solid advice that I will follow. Reminder to myself..don't skip leg day!!!!! Thank you.
Great episode and advice. You busted me on the warm-up part. I also lift as heavy as I can in good form, with slow negatives and controlled lifts. When I can do a good set of ten, I add weight. If I can’t do at least 6 good reps, I go back down in weight and do volume there.
Thanks for this Mark...I'm recovering from shoulder pain after benching too much,focusing now in the meantime on legs and core...warmups I did not,but now I are!! I'm a 62 yr old revisiting training after 30 yrs...this may take awhile!!
Well said Mark, very good advise even for the younger crowd. Start training like this even in your late 40's. Injury is a serious thing, stay in touch and focused while training. Health and mobility are more important than ego and ignorance.
Very good advice, Sir👍 I’m 63 and was bodybuilding and running a lot in the 1980’s. Since I’ve been taking care of my body on and off with jogging, bicycling and occasional periods of visiting the gym. But career and other interests kind of got in the way - guess that many people will recognize the pattern. Overweight and an unmistakable feeling of getting old was the result. The pattern from my youth, when I could smoke, drink and eat whatever I wanted as long as I did just a minor effort to keep in shape just wasn’t sufficient anymore... After a minor stroke 2 years ago I totally changed my attitude. A year of keto diet combined with walking a lot got rid of the worst overweight. And then I slowly started working out - weight training and cardio. I was stunned about how fast you actually can get good results again even at my age...but also by how easy it is to damage yourself if you’re not careful. That’s why your advice is so welcome😊 I might add just one more thing from my personal experience though. When you’re getting to the point where you’re really starting to see results, visit the gym less often but put much more effort into your training when you’re there. That gives you more time to recover which is increasingly important as we’re getting older. You will experience that you’ll really have the power to do such “super sessions” because you’re fully recovered. But off cause it also means that it’s more important never to miss a training session. And that it’s even more important to follow your advice👍

Mark you always pour out your knowledge to us and never try to sell anything. I'm 58 this year and have been working out since I was 16. I have always battled weight ( I'm down from 330 4 yrs ago) and currently about 285. I have arthritis in hips knees lower back and now it seems shoulders. This week I've been doing circuit training 4 exercises ( goblet squats, dumbbell press, db rows and pushups) 20 lb db 4 rounds 10 reps. I want to get db down to about 220. What would you suggest?

I love this video. At 52 mow, I totally agree with every single subject mentioned. Especially the mind to muscle connection and nutrition. The nutrition in my opinion is the hardest part for most people because it’s a 24 hr a day and a lifestyle change to eat better. We all know it’s not easy with all the temptations around us. Persevere and you will achieve a better you!. You can do it!
Great stuff. I'd suggest rest & recovery is part of the picture. I'm really focusing on what's sustainable on every area. And another thing, joint health. Really looking after tendons, sinews & connective tissue. Avoiding injury is crucial.
I find the 3 set warm-up a bit excessive. I do a 20 max slow light weight burn before I start the heavier weights. I have limited time and the 1 min rest between rep sets uses up time quick. Great advise !
I am 66 and added 15 pounds of muscle in the last year. My take on your points: It is all very individual. I could not grow any muscle, felt miserable and could not loose weight. Main reason was significant insulin resistance and a fatty liver. I first had to get rid of 40 pounds of fat by going low carb and intermittent fasting. I also lost some muscle in that year as I just did HIIT and no weights as it was too hard. Then I realized that I had to rebuild especially my upper body as I always had strong legs. So for me nutrition comes first and I do track calories for reference. I am still on low carb IF with 25% protein and 65% saturated fat. I played with my weight training for the last 18 months and started with one hour every other day. Then for a while I did 6 days a week and now I am back to every other day. The weight I lift is irrelevant as long as I do the volume. I increased it slightly since the beginning but I am not looking for maximum hypertrophy. I get more strength this way and it protects my joints. I just do compound movements mostly except for deadlifts as I feel it hurts my back. The only machine I use is a cable benchpress as I can do it alone safely. The rest is bodyweight and weights. I know that many talk about drinking a lot of water but that does not work with low carb. I deplete all my minerals when I do that. I drink for thirst only. I use coffee, creatine, vitamins and minerals as supplements. No protein powder and just freshly cooked food mostly animal protein with steak, chicken, eggs, fish and some seafood. Non starchy vegetables but no grains or seed oils. I am still not at my target of 10% body fat with a few points to go but I am ok with slow as I really want to make it stick and keep my metabolism up and running at my age. As I said, start with nutrition first then the rest becomes a lot easier. From my perspective low carb is the only sensible and easy way to go at my age. Good luck!
Hate to break it to you but it's highly unlikely that you gained 15lbs of NEW muscle tissue in one year, even in the first year of training an 18yr old whose testosterone profile and insane appetite are perfect for hypertrophy typically gains 12-20lbs, this number drops 20% every decade, if you started 50 years later you would likely gain about 5lbs lean, the rest is thanks to muscle memory regaining the 10lbs you lost. Similarly, the 44lbs of fat was likelier 34lbs plus 10lbs muscle tissue lost.
Gotta train the legs guys!! I’m 59 this week trained legs an hour tonite. Squatted 315 for 4 reps with excellent form. I will be competing in classic physique this year. Have been training over 30 years now!! Nutrition is over 60% easily!! You can do it guys!! It’s a lifestyle guys. Great advise sir!
I think I read about you in last months Iron Man Magazine. You are a source Mr Bowman of great inspiration for old geezers like me and my grand dad. He's well over 100 but still manages to get in leg day twice a week. Thanks to your advices, he's squatting 275 and benches over 300.
I'm 50 when to gym people laughing at me bcoz of me training with lights weights..... Some asshole show off with heavy weights.... I almost stop but then something telling me to continue and now after 2 years I'm laughing at them........ Hahaha never give up.. Good video advice. Age is not the factor to pull you back from training.
I once was in a gym and I knew a big 'muscle head's he was almost 300 pounds and he was always showing off ,one day I challenged him to a run only a 5k run( he didn't know besides lifting, I'm also a marathon runner) anyways the guy couldn't even run a quarter mile he almost died !!! I was 50 then and he was probably in his 30s. After our run he wasn't as cocky as he once was, and he started to include running in his routine, I haven't seen him in years,but last time I saw him he was able to run a couple miles, and told me someday he wants to run a 10k race. Heavy weights is an ego thing i put the peg to heavy weights just before i move to the next machine then the ones who watch think you lifted them when they go on after you ha. Lighter weights are better but do more reps. Im 65
Thanks, great advice! 49 here, doing regular exercise, 20 mins every morning at home without using any machine (75 push ups in 3 series of 25,... simple things) plus a few visits a week to the gym focusing on cardio (swimming 1K, biking 10K). That has been a good balance for me. I put a high focus on injury avoidance (that could be a valuable #6 although it probably derives from the first 5). Because a simple injury can cause weeks of down time that are super painful to gain back later. The part I need to work on most is nutrition... too many good things to eat around me... :-)

Wow! I really love your advice. I will be 58 this year and I went had a complete Thyroidectomy, radiation and hospitalized 6 times due to complications from medication. I have worked out my entire life, but I am having trouble losing the last 40 lbs to get back to a comfortable weight.Thank you for all the advice. I will follow them. I'm 63 and I've started to fast one day per week. I go 24 hours with only drinking water; no food. This helps my body detox and reboot. It actually feels good afterwards.
Great info...I am 54 and do all of the things you said. I still get great results from bodybuilding at my age. Yes, the three most important are nutrition, training, and rest/sleep...all three have to be right or muscles will not grow!!!!!

I am 73. I have been training with weights since I was about 13 even during the years that I played varsity lacrosse in high school and college. I have been a strong advocate for proper nutrition during that time. This video is “spot on”. He’s offering sound advice guys.
First time I saw another 73 yr old ,I thought they forgot about us .life and training similiar to yours.football, martial arts, and workout every day .stay strong.
The big one he missed was ‘Tendonitis’. Muscles grow stronger much faster than tendons ability to support the growth at you get older (tendons are less well vascularized). Undertraining to the extent that you are protecting your tendons is okay. Stick with it and you’ll get the growth you want.
@@deanwaller8283 This is my main criticism of this video. I started with super light weights, the lightest physio bands (yellow), had my form assessed but did too much volume and still wrecked both rotator cuff areas. Now 1.5 years later still trying to rehab, may need surgery. Telling older guys that they are under training is just silly, especially beginners. I also have tendonitis in shoulder (both rotator cuff and bicep). If I could go back 2 years i wouldn't listen to silly advice like this and instead go low and slow.
No, he includes the tendo too, because it’s not separated from the muscles. Tendo can not be” sick” if the muscles are in good shape. I’m talking to you as nutrition expert. I’m orthopedic dr., so I can talk to you about it with good acknowledge.

I start off light, take it slow and easy, then ramp it up and get injured or strain my shoulders then out for a few months trying to recover. Very frustrating because I need to get the weight off and get in shape. I understand what he and others are saying but need to figure out a way to exercise without injury. Yes, I have had a trainer in the past. Met a fellow that shed 60 lbs at age 56. He said all he does is elliptical to keep the weight off.

I'm sure he's on TRT. You should get on it, get T level tested, you want to be around 1100-1200 that's where I stay. Prescrip for Test Cyp, HCG, and Anastrozol.
You are so right,, I'm guilty of all 5.. especially 1.not pushing myself enough,,2.legs take too much energy and effort,,, It's the energy levels, running out of gas too fast,,lack of energy is my problem and soreness next day,,but Great ADVICE cheers.

I Like your videos man. However I've trained myself right into shoulder surgery the 28th of this month 1/28/21. Im 58 been hittin it hard for two years and well I just said it. I have to have rotator cuff surgery and have to have my left bicep tendon reattached. That's my only beef with your video being number one. You can over do it. Now im out for at least 4 months that's a long time to not train the upper body. So I've got some challenges coming up.
I am 63 and agree exactly with your 5 recommendations, Although intensity for guys over 60 might be number 1. I have 20 separate exercises usually 8x8 sets/reps, just under a 2 hour workout , I am cooked when its over, but feel great. Just need to improve my sleep.
your not sleeping because you are working out wayyy to much remember when lifting weights you are tearing up your muscles you recover and grow with good sleep
Excellent video and spot on. Totally agree with you. Fortunately I've spent many years as a Personal Fitness Trainer and still multi activity at 55 and still repeat everything you said everyday.
I'm a 78 year old male who has been on Atkins low carb for 25 years. I started doing resistance bands at home because of Covid. I would work out hard for a short period of time doing standing flys (no bench). Thirty reps using the right hand (120 pounds) and then change over to the left hand. I would then have a very low carb protein drink with a raw egg and then go to bed for a five hour cat nap. I did this for one and a half months with tremendous results. Each day that went by I would increase in strength. My body showed no signs of breaking down. Probably because of all the rest I was getting. THEN WITHOUT WARNING I went to bed one night and all the muscles I had been working out became so painful that I was unable to sleep. This continued for about three weeks. I spent most of my time sleeping because of the pain. I would actually have to lift my legs into bed they were that sore! After I was better I decided not to do that again. This time I would sit in a chair and do chest expansion exercises. Because the only bands I had were weak I built up to 90 reps. Again the results were great after a lot of rest. Then one night the same pain the flys caused (waist to knees front and back). I had no idea why I should get the same pain doing two totally different exercises. CAN YOU HELP? WHEN YOU OVERDO AN EXERCISE YOUR BODY USUALLY WARNS YOU BY GETTING WEAKER. THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME. I ACUALLY GOT A LITTLE STRONGER EVERY DAY.

I’m 75 and I basically do what he is advising, but I have learned some critical advice from his video. It is amazing if you follow a very strict serious exercise regime you will find amazing results. Too many of our age give up without accepting the necessity of a serious excercise regime. Don’t give up.

Hello From Los Angeles ... 58 here .. started training hard 3 years ago. My friend it works!! We can build muscle in our 50s ... I have to keep reminding myself there is no finish line. This is how we live now .. we eat well, sleep well and work out. You end up standing out in a crowd too. Especially here just about every guy over 50 is over weight (and so was I).
Look better, feel better and live better ... More power to you my brother.... get some!

I am 65 now, soon 66 and have just gotten back into weight training after a 40 year gap. Been following all of these videos exactly as they say, and I can tell you they do give results. After only about four weeks the results are very noticeable. Looking forward to what the end of the year brings. My 34" pants and shorts age getting real loose and can now wear 32" size.

@@aaronbarlow4376 Rofl, best comment ever. Man, i have big legs and it took me a while to find leg work outs that I could do. Squats and deadlifts were wrecking my knees. I get good enough results from leg press and squat machine, it was a hard pill to swallow giving up squats and dead lifts. The ass is what takes the hit when removing those from your workout. Its hard to replace that with leg kick back machine, the ass doesnt fill out the jeans like it use to lol.

Hey guys.... I live in Asia... I went back to the States after being away for 15 years... here's what I noticed : The TV commercials in between the reruns that my obese , younger than me now deceased sister after she got some type 2 diabetes on top of all her other issues would watch 24/7. There were either fast food commercials.... greasy , calories its tasty once in awhile but don't make it a habit.
Then it was commercials like "Ask your doctor if (insert name that ends with x) is right for you , then in a sinister sped up voice " May cause dizziness , blackouts , irregular heart beat coma , suicidal thoughts...." I mean this really freak me out , they kill with shit food on one side , then kill you with pharma on the other ! While you pay them to do it !
The month I was there I gorged myself on Western foods that I missed... like a donut shop in the morning , double cheese burgers , apple pie , pizzas You name it... at the end of the month I was a fat slob... I couldn't believe I had arrived there. I remember bowel movements were messy and greasy and it's straight to the shower,,, no way wiping going to take care of that.
The feeling of all this blubber ,it affected the way I move , my face started looking like John Candy towards the end... I never had gotten this way in my LIFE and thought I may be like that forever! I remember NOT liking it at ALL ! My ass barely fit in the airline seat on the trip back... seriously TOTALLY filled it, Totally a new experience that I DID NOT enjoy one bit.
When I got back to Asia , I started eating local again.... much less meat , almost NO PROCESSED FOOD , very little dairy , very little processed sugar ... food is more like straight from the farm to the kitchen several fresh veggies with each meal , to your plate and it's delicious. You feel nourished not all clogged up.
In about a months time I was back to my normal healthy weight.. no gym , no workout... lots of green tea very available here and water. Processed food , sugar... killed my sister along with booze... I warned her since the 80's no use.
I started cycling for recreation and transportation... first couple months was a bit of a drag until I got to a certain level of fitness after that it was a BLAST and I still ride... keeps me trim and toned legs and butt...your lady will appreciate it. If you get a bike... get a good one that suits you... no suspension forks unless you off road.. you get an upper end bike.. you will WANT to ride it.... that's important and worth the extra bucks... anyway I hope I didn't babble on too much and this helps. It was a sobering and reflective experience for me.
Good for you for deciding to get back in shape. I highly recommend getting a testosterone test from your dr..if you have low t you still be put on testosterone And you will see a HUGE difference in your body, your weight training and libido as an extra bonus..good luck my brother.god speed!
Recovery time. I'm 76. For years I adhered to the 2 to 3 day recovery time. During this past year I've extended recovery time to 4 to 5 days. The reults in definition and muscle growth are remarkable. And of course an adequate protein intake.

I don't no what you were watching, ....but this guy is an idiot.....everything he said is wrong for trainers over 50.....he is not educated in today's bodybuildering science. ....I've watched his other videos, ....they get worse,....he actually does a squat and calls it a deadlift.

You’re right about undertraining. When I first found your channel and others like Thenx before covid, I was really intense, and I was getting more results in a few months than I did in the past 20 years. Covid and my failure to sustain once the gyms closed really slowed me down. I lost a lot last year.

I'm 67, a retired cop and I've been in the gym my whole life. Even though I'm a certified personal trainer I often don't follow my own advice. This video reminded me that I'm guilty of some of these things especially neglecting legs. That stops tomorrow!

I get the leg part but what if you had seriously traumatic knee injuries when you younger and now have arthritis in both knees along with atrophy and nerve damage in my left quad. I’m only 38, I was an athlete growing up but I’m kinda fucked right now. All I can do is walk a lot & eat like a bird so I don’t get too chubby. Weight gain is horrible for knee problems too.

I'm 48. And a long distance runner. However, I include calisthenics and kickboxing. I train like a fighter. And hell yes, hydration is a major step.
#6: cool down/stretching. Also, in regards to warm ups, find Wenning Strength’s Wenning warm ups. I am 51, been at this for 39 years, can still get 350 + on all big three(bench, squat, dead). I am very happy to have found this video.
Approaching 46 yrs old. I got back into lifting a few years ago after seeing a photo of myself. Shamed this old Marine into action. I sent this video to myself so I can watch and rewatch it. I've learned a lot over the past few years, these are the kind of videos I'm looking for.
I started working out at 55 which was last August. I am 56 now. I guess I was one of those guys that stayed relatively fit or at least looked fit. I finally got to having shoulder problems and I got the covid and that left me even more drained. So, I made a 180° turn and it was a great decision. I feel like I am in my 20's! Today in Texas we are under 10" of snow!
Theres your mistake pal ,lifting weights ,the best form off exercise after say 40 is calisthenics your own body weight , you can still achieve a fantastic body and without all the injuries you will get from lifting weights

When starting out pushing hard increases the chance for injury, which will end your motivation quickly. It also causes soreness which is another barrier to motivation and developing a daily workout habit.

This guy is on time ! I'm a cyclist . Used to lift daily , then quit lifting when I hit 45 or so . gained 30 Lbs. that no amount of riding would take off . I'm 55 now . Started lifting again about 2 years ago. Incredible results . Dropped most of the extra belly fat in about 6 months. Not only did my club riding improve to the point that I can ride with a faster group , my cognition improved ! I just stumbled across this channel. Great information . At our age feeling and looking better is priceless. Keep up the good work !

Great advice. I'm also nearly 58 now, been involved in one sport or another most of my life...the thing to remember is to warm up real slow like you say, in a nutshell your workouts do take longer when you're older.
Also, if I may add...
Stretch, stretch, stretch after your workout.
Plus...you can actually divide an intense workout over two days OR hit the same muscles again the next day for a couple of extra sets to gain muscle.

Thanks for the great motivation. It was easy to train 20 years ago. I could lose weight and gain muscle at will. At 50....not so easy. I'm starting to fall apart but don't want to let it happen. I have a 1 year goal of how I want to look and feel. This is solid advice that I will follow. Reminder to myself..don't skip leg day!!!!!

Great episode and advice. You busted me on the warm-up part. I also lift as heavy as I can in good form, with slow negatives and controlled lifts. When I can do a good set of ten, I add weight. If I can’t do at least 6 good reps, I go back down in weight and do volume there.
Excellent advice Mark. I was ripped at 50 but gradually slacked off and am back in the gym at 59. Every point you make is absolutely on the money!

I’m 63 and was bodybuilding and running a lot in the 1980’s. Since I’ve been taking care of my body on and off with jogging, bicycling and occasional periods of visiting the gym. But career and other interests kind of got in the way - guess that many people will recognize the pattern. Overweight and an unmistakable feeling of getting old was the result. The pattern from my youth, when I could smoke, drink and eat whatever I wanted as long as I did just a minor effort to keep in shape just wasn’t sufficient anymore...
After a minor stroke 2 years ago I totally changed my attitude. A year of keto diet combined with walking a lot got rid of the worst overweight. And then I slowly started working out - weight training and cardio. I was stunned about how fast you actually can get good results again even at my age...but also by how easy it is to damage yourself if you’re not careful. That’s why your advice is so welcome😊
I might add just one more thing from my personal experience though. When you’re getting to the point where you’re really starting to see results, visit the gym less often but put much more effort into your training when you’re there. That gives you more time to recover which is increasingly important as we’re getting older. You will experience that you’ll really have the power to do such “super sessions” because you’re fully recovered. But off cause it also means that it’s more important never to miss a training session. And that it’s even more important to follow your advice👍

I have always battled weight ( I'm down from 330 4 yrs ago) and currently about 285. I have arthritis in hips knees lower back and now it seems shoulders. This week I've been doing circuit training 4 exercises ( goblet squats, dumbbell press, db rows and pushups) 20 lb db 4 rounds 10 reps. I want to get db down to about 220. What would you suggest?

I love this video. At 52 mow, I totally agree with every single subject mentioned. Especially the mind to muscle connection and nutrition. The nutrition in my opinion is the hardest part for most people because it’s a 24 hr a day and a lifestyle change to eat better. We all know it’s not easy with all the temptations around us. Persevere and you will achieve a better you!. You can do it!
Great stuff. I'd suggest rest & recovery is part of the picture. I'm really focusing on what's sustainable on every area. And another thing, joint health. Really looking after tendons, sinews & connective tissue. Avoiding injury is crucial.

I find the 3 set warm-up a bit excessive. I do a 20 max slow light weight burn before I start the heavier weights. I have limited time and the 1 min rest between rep sets uses up time quick. Great advise !
I am 66 and added 15 pounds of muscle in the last year. My take on your points: It is all very individual. I could not grow any muscle, felt miserable and could not loose weight. Main reason was significant insulin resistance and a fatty liver. I first had to get rid of 40 pounds of fat by going low carb and intermittent fasting. I also lost some muscle in that year as I just did HIIT and no weights as it was too hard. Then I realized that I had to rebuild especially my upper body as I always had strong legs. So for me nutrition comes first and I do track calories for reference. I am still on low carb IF with 25% protein and 65% saturated fat. I played with my weight training for the last 18 months and started with one hour every other day. Then for a while I did 6 days a week and now I am back to every other day. The weight I lift is irrelevant as long as I do the volume. I increased it slightly since the beginning but I am not looking for maximum hypertrophy. I get more strength this way and it protects my joints. I just do compound movements mostly except for deadlifts as I feel it hurts my back. The only machine I use is a cable benchpress as I can do it alone safely. The rest is bodyweight and weights. I know that many talk about drinking a lot of water but that does not work with low carb. I deplete all my minerals when I do that. I drink for thirst only. I use coffee, creatine, vitamins and minerals as supplements. No protein powder and just freshly cooked food mostly animal protein with steak, chicken, eggs, fish and some seafood. Non starchy vegetables but no grains or seed oils. I am still not at my target of 10% body fat with a few points to go but I am ok with slow as I really want to make it stick and keep my metabolism up and running at my age. As I said, start with nutrition first then the rest becomes a lot easier. From my perspective low carb is the only sensible and easy way to go at my age. Good luck!
Hate to break it to you but it's highly unlikely that you gained 15lbs of NEW muscle tissue in one year, even in the first year of training an 18yr old whose testosterone profile and insane appetite are perfect for hypertrophy typically gains 12-20lbs, this number drops 20% every decade, if you started 50 years later you would likely gain about 5lbs lean, the rest is thanks to muscle memory regaining the 10lbs you lost. Similarly, the 44lbs of fat was likelier 34lbs plus 10lbs muscle tissue lost.

I'm 50 when to gym people laughing at me bcoz of me training with lights weights..... Some asshole show off with heavy weights.... I almost stop but then something telling me to continue and now after 2 years I'm laughing at them........ Hahaha never give up.. Good video advice. I once was in a gym and I knew a big 'muscle head's he was almost 300 pounds and he was always showing off ,one day I challenged him to a run only a 5k run( he didn't know besides lifting, I'm also a marathon runner) anyways the guy couldn't even run a quarter mile he almost died !!! I was 50 then and he was probably in his 30s. After our run he wasn't as cocky as he once was, and he started to include running in his routine, I haven't seen him in years,but last time I saw him he was able to run a couple miles, and told me someday he wants to run a 10k race. Heavy weights is an ego thing i put the peg to heavy weights just before i move to the next machine then the ones who watch think you lifted them when they go on after you ha. Lighter weights are better but do more reps. Im 65
Thanks, great advice! 49 here, doing regular exercise, 20 mins every morning at home without using any machine (75 push ups in 3 series of 25,... simple things) plus a few visits a week to the gym focusing on cardio (swimming 1K, biking 10K). That has been a good balance for me. I put a high focus on injury avoidance (that could be a valuable #6 although it probably derives from the first 5). Because a simple injury can cause weeks of down time that are super painful to gain back later.
The part I need to work on most is nutrition... too many good things to eat around me... :-)

I'm 63 and I've started to fast one day per week. I go 24 hours with only drinking water; no food. This helps my body detox and reboot. It actually feels good afterwards.

I am 73. I have been training with weights since I was about 13 even during the years that I played varsity lacrosse in high school and college. I have been a strong advocate for proper nutrition during that time. This video is “spot on”. He’s offering sound advice guys.

The big one he missed was ‘Tendonitis’. Muscles grow stronger much faster than tendons ability to support the growth at you get older (tendons are less well vascularized). Undertraining to the extent that you are protecting your tendons is okay. Stick with it and you’ll get the growth you want.

I started with super light weights, the lightest physio bands (yellow), had my form assessed but did too much volume and still wrecked both rotator cuff areas. Now 1.5 years later still trying to rehab, may need surgery. Telling older guys that they are under training is just silly, especially beginners. I also have tendonitis in shoulder (both rotator cuff and bicep). If I could go back 2 years i wouldn't listen to silly advice like this and instead go low and slow.
No, he includes the tendo too, because it’s not separated from the muscles. Tendo can not be” sick” if the muscles are in good shape. I’m talking to you as nutrition expert. I’m orthopedic dr., so I can talk to you about it with good acknowledge.

I start off light, take it slow and easy, then ramp it up and get injured or strain my shoulders then out for a few months trying to recover. Very frustrating because I need to get the weight off and get in shape. I understand what he and others are saying but need to figure out a way to exercise without injury. Yes, I have had a trainer in the past. Met a fellow that shed 60 lbs at age 56. He said all he does is elliptical to keep the weight off.
Warm up every day focusing on stretching and it should be ok.

You should get on it, get T level tested, you want to be around 1100-1200 that's where I stay. Prescrip for Test Cyp, HCG, and Anastrozol.
You are so right,, I'm guilty of all 5.. especially 1.not pushing myself enough,,2.legs take too much energy and effort,,, It's the energy levels, running out of gas too fast,,lack of energy is my problem and soreness next day,,but Great ADVICE cheers.

And in keeping with your perspective, I have to train my mind to treat the pain as an investment in feeling better the rest of the day. Rather than think oh man, I gotta stop, instead think, oh this is going to feel so good later today.

I Like your videos man. However I've trained myself right into shoulder surgery the 28th of this month 1/28/21. Im 58 been hittin it hard for two years and well I just said it. I have to have rotator cuff surgery and have to have my left bicep tendon reattached. That's my only beef with your video being number one. You can over do it. Now im out for at least 4 months that's a long time to not train the upper body. So I've got some challenges coming up.

I am 63 and agree exactly with your 5 recommendations, Although intensity for guys over 60 might be number 1. I have 20 separate exercises usually 8x8 sets/reps, just under a 2 hour workout , I am cooked when its over, but feel great. Just need to improve my sleep.
your not sleeping because you are working out wayyy to much remember when lifting weights you are tearing up your muscles you recover and grow with good sleep
Excellent video and spot on. Totally agree with you. Fortunately I've spent many years as a Personal Fitness Trainer and still multi activity at 55 and still repeat everything you said everyday.
I'm a 78 year old male who has been on Atkins low carb for 25 years. I started doing resistance bands at home because of Covid. I would work out hard for a short period of time doing standing flys (no bench). Thirty reps using the right hand (120 pounds) and then change over to the left hand. I would then have a very low carb protein drink with a raw egg and then go to bed for a five hour cat nap. I did this for one and a half months with tremendous results. Each day that went by I would increase in strength. My body showed no signs of breaking down. Probably because of all the rest I was getting. THEN WITHOUT WARNING I went to bed one night and all the muscles I had been working out became so painful that I was unable to sleep. This continued for about three weeks. I spent most of my time sleeping because of the pain. I would actually have to lift my legs into bed they were that sore! After I was better I decided not to do that again. This time I would sit in a chair and do chest expansion exercises. Because the only bands I had were weak I built up to 90 reps. Again the results were great after a lot of rest. Then one night the same pain the flys caused (waist to knees front and back). I had no idea why I should get the same pain doing two totally different exercises. CAN YOU HELP?

I’m 75 and I basically do what he is advising, but I have learned some critical advice from his video. It is amazing if you follow a very strict serious exercise regime you will find amazing results. Too many of our age give up without accepting the necessity of a serious excercise regime. Don’t give up.
