      It was ok, Dunkirk was very clean no bombed out buildings, no litter at all on the beach, and I dont think I saw a single character at all smoke one cigarette. Really really bad, like really really bad.

    telling the story of Dunkirk didn't needs the non-linear story structure, but in the hands of a master like Chris Nolan in certailnly benefitted from this decision.

    I think Dunkirk was a great film, and I loved the timeline stuff! I don't think people in the cinema with me appreciated it much though, judging by there conversations as we were leaving

      I was very confused watching this in the movie theater. It was jumping between different days and hours
      It wouldn't be so confusing if I watched it at home having an opportunity to rewind a few times to understand when the scenes were taking place.

    I love Nolan and his hyper-realism films. The way he makes something so complex look so simplistic and the way he told the story was classic Nolan. Being a war vet myself, seeing how time almost felt as if it stopped, felt the most true and real. I felt it as if I was back in combat again. The sudden action and then peace and quiet right after and acting as if nothing happened felt the most realistic telling of war.

    Brilliant commentary on the film. This video made me appreciate Dunkirk even more. I loved the film, including the way the timelines were handled. The film honors its subject -- the historical event, as well as the sense of close-up individual human experiences. For me the film conveyed the enormity of the event, the danger, the tragedy and the courage. And so gorgeously filmed.

    Cillian Murphy's character wasn't a deserter. He was the sole survivor, as far as we see on the screen (in the air section), of a ship which was sunk.

  • @WillingSpade

    The historical importance of Dunkirk is something I feel will be lost on most movie goers... If things had gone south, we may be living in a completely different world! I would have like to have seen (at least in the form of an epilogish text) an explanation of how much of a turning point in the war this was. To be fair, Nolan does this very well, but it kind of requires that the audience has a deep understanding of what took place in order to realize the gravity of the events! That's my only criticism... It was a theatrical spectacle that I will never forget!

    • @Morphjin47
      @Morphjin47 5 лет назад +1

      re-watch the end with subtitles....i agree with you first time i watched it it felt like the significance was lost on first watch. but after listening to the conversation at the end between the 2 soldiers on the train and watching the reactions of everyone involved...it was pretty clear that it dawned on them how significant their victory was.

      The detractors complaints are mainly how Nolan didn't follow every prior known war movie in existence... Nolan subverts the war genre just like he did neo noir, comics and sci-fi

    dunkirk was amazing tension wise, but where it failed for me is making me invested in the characters stories. i can't remember a single characters name. i was constantly getting the dark haired white guys mixed up. maybe that was to leave them as blank canvasses for the everyman, but it really didn't work for me.

    The HBO series The Pacific did a great job of showing multiple perspectives during WWII. It was created by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg. It's also one of few movies/ shows that doesn't glamorize war, it's shown for what it is.

    Not saying that the structure was faulty... I don't even have a problem with us finding out people's Fates in other timelines. That was actually good. A few scenes fell a little out of place. Like that scene with Cillian Murphy denying the soldiers to board on the boat.
    The screenplay was good, bit not a very solid one.

    The editing made it seem like Hardy's plane was gliding forever. Soldiers had already made it home and the boy's death was in the paper, yet Hardy's plane was still gliding. That made it a bit confusing.

    • @bassgasmask
      @bassgasmask 7 лет назад

      Ii wonder how he would handle it. He should dabble in almost every genre(if he wants to)... but i think Nolan said he wouldn't want to do a comedy or romantic comedy(i forgot which one) but would like to see if he is capable of doing a zombie flick, 007 movie,

    • @Jotakumon
      @Jotakumon 7 лет назад +1

      It was comedy I believe. And the reason he stated is that it is quite difficult to do a good comedy, one that would please a larger audience, and himself too.
      As for the next genre he's using, I wished he went into the fantasy direction, but it will probably be something more simple. My bet is on a "simple" drama, or a Western. Maybe another sci-fi thriller, he's made several of those, but maybe he keeps getting back.

    • @vishalcain
      @vishalcain 7 лет назад +1

      I agree with Jeremy Jahns. I still don't get the timeline thing either. This movie was a mess for me, with no character development at all. I couldn't remember the names of any characters nor did I care for them. This movie was saved by the fantastic visuals and camera work.

    • @arb6729
      @arb6729 7 лет назад

      The editing is as messy as the timeline. Never had seen a movie with so much bad editing than this one.

    • @michaelotis223
      @michaelotis223 7 лет назад +2

      I disagree with Jeremy's opinion, but I understand why he wasn't into it.... Him like most people have a way with which movies like this ought to go - Nolan subverts this just like how he subverts neo noir, comics and sci-fi genres. Kinda amazing people walked into Dunkirk expecting Saving Private Ryan Part 2 or something....

    • @richardvernon317
      @richardvernon317 7 лет назад

      The Germans painted the noses and rudders of the Bf-109's yellow so that they stopped shooting each other down (they had quite a few blue on blue (friendly fire) incidents) when they started fighting the RAF over the Channel at the start of the Battle of Britain in July 1940 (about six weeks after this film is set). Its not accurate for Dunkirk, but Nolan wanted the viewers (the vast majority of which are not aircraft spotters) to be able to tell the Spitfires and Bf-109's apart.
