  • Eric Morecambe (John Eric Bartholomew, 14 May 1926 - 28 May 1984) and Ernie Wise (Ernest Wiseman, 27 November 1925 - 21 March 1999), known as Morecambe and Wise (and sometimes as Eric and Ernie), were an iconic English comic double act, working in variety, radio, film and most successfully in television. Their partnership lasted from 1941 until Morecambe's death in 1984. The show was a significant part of British popular culture, and they have been described as "the most illustrious, and the best-loved, double-act that Britain has ever produced".
In a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted for by industry professionals, The Morecambe and Wise Show was placed 14th. In September 2006, they were voted by the general public as number 2 in a poll of TV's 50 Greatest Stars. Their early career was the subject of the 2011 television biopic Eric and Ernie, and their 1970s career was the subject of the television biopic Eric, Ernie and Me in 2017. In 2013, the two were honoured with a blue plaque at Teddington Studios where their last four series were recorded

How lovely to see this episode. I've never seen it before. Eric and Ernie, Two Ronnies, Only fools and horses, the Good Life and To the Manor Born was what was on as a young kids. Simply the best of wholesome, family comedy which everyone loved.

Never seen this one - Thanks for sharing!
A friend has often spoken of watching the 1969 M&W Christmas special and being shocked by seeing 'Do you know how Christmas Trees are grown?" being performed with a bunch of children! And here it is!
    * For those who don't know, 'Do you know how Christmas trees are grown?" is the ironic song that's played in the background of various scenes of tension/action at the Piz Gloria ski resort in the George Lazenby James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" which came in...1969! My friend loved the movie back then and still considers it his favorite 007.

I used to love their show every week. Part of the past I don't want to forget. It was nice to see the recent biopic treat them honestly but with the reverence they deserve.

@@GraemeMartin Hi Graeme, I just noticed a sketch on this 1969 special which they would rehash on their ITV Thames show. Ernie's bath time was one sketch virtually redone in 1983 I believe.

Amazing that Kenny Ball was so popular but his records still pop up in charity shops 50 years later. He shared the same barber as Graham Hill. Morcambe and Wise, rightly loved but very dated. I always prefered Steptoe and Son which seemed edgier and had a lot more swearing 'bleeder', 'shitehawk'. The shape of things to come? Good stuff, thank you uploader.

I was one that actually felt uncomfortable watching Steptoe. It had an undercurrent of nastiness and hate between them that seemed less comedy and more real than any comedy I know and I could never watch a complete episode. Neither character was sympathetic. Both were bullies.
