  • Def Leppard's "Hysteria", originally played by the incomparable Rick Allen. It turns out this song is a lot harder to play than Rick makes it sound. Lots of right-foot syncopation and snare hits that don't land where you expect during the fills. I spent a LONG time learning and practicing this song, and I still don't have it down 100% (there's an audio edit in there where I messed up one of the transitions; hopefully you won't hear it). And here's the kicker: Rick plays all of this with one arm! For those not familiar with his story, he lost his left arm in a traffic accident decades ago and relearned how to play the drums with just his right arm; he uses his left foot and multiple electronic triggers on the floor to do the work his left hand used to do. It's pretty amazing.
By the way, that's my son that wanders into the shot in the closing moments. He didn't realize I was recording and wanted to inform me that the bathroom clock was out of batteries!
Kit is a Roland TD-17KV using drum-tec's Ayotte Clear patch from their "Rock Classics Sound Edition".
