- Princess Zelda is playable in the new Echoes of Wisdom! But why?
Basically, the short version is: because people bothered Eiji Aonuma until he caved. Sure, there's a lot more nuance going on here, but let's be real, he got asked about a game where you play as Zelda in almost every interview for over a decade, and now we have Echoes of Wisdom.
There's a lot of debate online on certain social media platforms run by rich weirdos (take your pick given that description) about Zelda the Tri Rod to create echoes rather than just having a sword. If you're wondering about that yourself, feel free to look at all the quotes in this video through the lens of Nintendo developers wanting Zelda to have a distinct play-style.
Is the new play-style appropriate? That'll depend on how fun it is to actually play. That's probably the thing that matters most.
Oh, and yes, we know the Mario & Luigi video is currently winning the poll, that'll be along shortly. This video was easier to get done in a single evening, because, well, it's mostly just a bunch of quotes on screen. Sometimes the low-effort video is the video that gets made.

All I know is: The game should have been called "The Legend of Link".

I knew Zelda was gonna be the playable character when she was running away from the darkness, even before the title card came along. However, for a moment, I thought the name of the game was gonna be “The Legend of Link”, for some reason.

It also sounds like they found a mechanic they thought would work with Zelda. Seems she will be more like a wizard than a sword fighter, which makes sense.
If they were going to make her more like a wizard, then her magic from Smash would’ve been better, but that’s just my opinion.
Zelda has been playable before, but this is the first time (outside of Cd-i) where it was HER OWN game, and not just a supporting role in one of Link's many games. Zelda isn't just one of many choices, she's the LEAD character.

The thing is that, Zelda is her own character loved by people, it's not about her being a woman, it's about her being Zelda.
They could’ve had her using magic and bow to fight, like she does in Smash, or give her the pirate gun she had when she was a pirate.
I have been waiting so long for a Zelda game like this. I cant wait to see what wacky nonsense we will be able to do with her powers.

Its somehow a high joke that marios princess gets her own spinoff and its almost a minigame collection and not serious in story at all, and then zelda gets...THIS :D a proper game, dangerous story and strong hero ;)

I mean.. i wanted a playable zelda, sense i was a child. As Zelda, has always been my favorite princess.
Many female superheroes were usually just assigned sidekick roles and spin-off stories in the early days of comic book superheroes until Wonder Woman came along. Since then, there has been lots of different female superheroes, including The Powerpuff Girls, in the modern era.
The same thing holds true in other forms of media, including video games, there used to be very few female protagonists (Samus from Metroid, being one example), and these days, video games have numerous main characters and side characters that are female including Princess Peach and Toadette (the female version of Toad from Mario Kart: Double Dash) from the Super Mario Bros. franchise and Zelda and Linkle (the female version of Link introduced in Hyrule Warriors) from the Legend of Zelda franchise.

I just noticed Kengo Takanashi VA for Botw/TotK Link is in 7 different animes. I'm gonna pull up Seven Senses of the Re'Union. It's not his highest rated work but at least his character has a sword in that and I'm gonna wonder about a BotW anime. I'm not expecting the stars and the moon, but it's nice to wonder about things.
Nintendo is probably "testing the waters" to see how people react to zelda being playable so they can decide on making her playable or not in any future games.

@@lewatoaofair2522 While it's really good, it's more in the style of that game and Animation Magic's body of work on the CD-I in general.
Thing is, they could’ve have her fight with magic and bow only like she does in Smash, or give her a gun like she had when she was pirate. Or they could’ve made Linkle canon by bringing her and her crossbows.

Somw of those quotes are odd because theyre about a general female protagonist, not Zelda specifically. If we got a game where you play as, say, Impa, people would still be "but when can you play as Zelda?"
Y'know now that i think about it, a Lana and Cia game in the style of that one Bayonetta prequel where you explore a dreamlike world would be interesting.

I honesty want a new 2D top down Zelda game that is a continuation of the original Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link.
How crazy would it be if the sequel to Tears of the Kingdom had a playable Zelda as the main character, re-building her armies and kingdom, working with the champions, and rescuing Link? I never thought Nintendo would even do this game.

I don't see much demand for Halo, God of War to have female protagonists.
The reason that Zelda gets so much demand is because she is the title character. She is also really awesome whenever you see her in the mainline games.

This game better have a memorable and difficult final boss fight. I'm sick of Zelda games being so easy I can phone it in and not pay attention. I haven't had a game over to a Zelda final boss since A Link to the Past.
Yeah, I get what you mean. It should be hard especially when you have a hax ability like a magic wand that can summon anything basically. What would make it more intense was if selecting a replica was in real time rather than in a paused menu so it isn't too easy to fight bosses

Putting it in the context of women's rights at the end is awfully silly. Wanting a female protagonist in a game series is fine, but acting like it's something you're owed by the creator of a story whether a game or book is entitled nonsense. It's something like saying, "How dare an author write a story they want to write when they should be writting the story I want them to write." Women's rights aren't being violated because a reoccuring story has a male protagonist.
I'm a woman and I agree. That was rather off-putting and reach on their part. Especially when a lot of games have female protagonists now. It's not like no games had female protagonists before this. What is special about this game is it's *Princess Zelda*. Not because she's female. And yeah, people aren't entitled to another persons story. And it's especially goofy to treat a piece of entertainment like it's equivalent to women getting the right to vote.

She doesn't actually fight with weapons, she uses a magic rod to copy things and have them fight for her. This isn't a bad concept but I don't think this is what the fans wanted. ;p
